Dear Students, Parents and Families:

As you know, there have been significant developments over the past few

days. Significant efforts are being made to counter the spread of COVID-19.

Governor Lamont has closed all schools through March 31st. In a way to

provide continuity of learning for every student, we are implementing an

independent distance learning plan. This initiative will support ongoing

learning when students are home from school. The program will allow us to

provide students with an independent learning experience on emergency

closing days with the understanding that the day will not need to be added

to the calendar in June. The program will be initiated on Monday, March 23,

2020. It will cover independent learning for all students through the current

March 31st closure. While at home on these days, students are asked to engage in

independent learning, using their time to apply the skills and knowledge

they have been working on in their classrooms. Included in this booklet are

the following:

• Menus of learning activities carefully crafted by teams of teachers and

curriculum professionals for the days we are closed. These activities

represent various content areas and levels of difficulty, and aim to

support creativity, innovative thinking, personal wellness, and social

consciousness.

• Some activities refer to a separate worksheet. These items are

highlighted in red, and contain a reference number (e.g., “1-A”) which

can be found at the top of each attachment. All attachments have been

provided in student packets, and are also available on the website.

After each activity is completed, check the box in the activity square.

Students should bring the menu (as well as any other worksheets or papers)

back to school to share with their teacher on April 1st. In the event that we

need to remain closed, we will have additional independent learning

activities posted on the website and ready for pick up on April 1st. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers. For your convenience, all of the information will be available on our district website beginning Thursday March 19th. Hard copies will be available at your child’s school on Monday March 23rd. Students with IEP’s will have individual packets ready for pick up at the schools on Monday as well. Your continued partnership to help Bridgeport Public Schools develop

meaningful programs and activities for our students is always

appreciated!

Sincerely, Michael J. Testani Superintendent

Instructions for CER Activity- Can be used in grades 6, 7, and 8

• Look at the picture closely

• Determine what clues you have (don't forget to look in the kitchen)

• You can use the clip art hand or write down your clues

• Make a claim about what you see (see possible claims

page)

• Fill in both graphic organizers and come up with a reasonable explanation about what happened (No right

answer, but all explanations must have evidence)

• Last view the C (claims) E (evidence) R (reasoning) video
