  • 30 Day Diary Entry Challenge

(24th March 2020 to 22nd April 2020) Day 1 Now that you have all been home, not attending school for almost a week

due to the global spread of the Coronavirus, how has this affected your life

and the lives of your family members? Write at least ½ an A5 page. Give

your entry the title “How the Coronavirus has affected me”.

Day 2 With the entire country facing LOCKDOWN from midnight on Thursday,

26th March, for the next 21 days, what are you going to miss most during

this period? Why? What are you going to do to deal with this dilemma?

Day 3 There is so much negativity surrounding COVIV-19 and LOCKDOWN. What

positive things can you think of which have resulted (or will come about)

from the situation in which we find ourselves? Eg. Decrease in the petrol

    price.

Day 4 I am most grateful for … Complete the sentence. What are you most

grateful for and why? (It could be 1 thing or a few.)

Day 5 Whether you are outgoing or shy, human beings are generally social beings.

It is foreign to us all to be isolated at home.

How are you coping with this new way of life? (How are you adjusting to not

seeing your friends and doing other normal activities?)

Day 6 My best friend is …

Write about your best friend. Why is he/she your best friend, what

happened that resulted in your friendship?

Day 7 List and write about five (5) things that make you happy.

Day 8 Write about your favourite song or piece of music. What is your favourite

song? Who performs it? Why is it your favourite song? How does listening

    to it make you feel?

Day 9 Today, being the 1st April …

    You have a choice:

    Either:

  • a) APRIL FOOL!!!

Write about an April Fool’s prank that was successfully carried out.

(It can be a prank you heard about or a prank played on you.)

    Or

    b) Nobody’s Fool

Write about a prank that failed. (It could be a prank someone tried

to play on you that backfired or a prank you tried to play on someone

    else that failed.)

Day 10 Write about the three (3) qualities that you most like about yourself.

Day 11 We are on our 11th diary entry and 8th day of LOCKDOWN. (1/3/ of the way

already!) Write about a typical day in your life during COVID-19 Lockdown.

Day 12 Pretend that you are your pet. (If you do not have a pet, be your imaginary

pet.) What would your pet say?

Day 13 Today’s entry is not going to be a written one. Today you are to draw a

picture. If, like me, you cannot draw, doodle. HAVE FUN! (If you need some

    inspiration, google “Doodling”.)

Day 14 Write about what you most love about your parent / parents.

Day 15 Write about something that you have to do but really don’t want to do and

how you are going to motivate yourself to do it. (E.g. A chore or task for

school. What do you say to yourself in order to get it done and is there a

    reward for getting it done?)

Day 16 Money, power or good looks? What would you rather have an unlimited

    supply of? & Why?

Day 17 Which one of your senses do you value most and why? (Your senses are

    sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch)

Day 18 Where is your mind?

Sit quietly for 10 minutes. Calm yourself. Be conscious of the sounds and

your surroundings and observe how your thoughts come and go. Time

yourself or get a family member to time you. Now write about the thoughts

that went through your mind in this 10 minute period.

Day 19 If you could be a cartoon character, who would you be and why?

  • Day 20 Today’s entry is based on the circular I Am word search, which is our

    English group profile pic.

Write down the first 3 words that you see. Write about them.

Consider the following questions when writing your entry:

    1. What do these words mean to you?

    2. Do they describe you?

    3. Do they describe someone you like or love?

    4. Do they describe the sort of person you would like to be?

Day 21 Describe a happy early childhood memory.

Day 22 Write about the most difficult task that you have had to do.

Day 23 The best person to be in Lockdown with is … Why?

Write about who the best person is to be in Lockdown with. It may be

someone you are at home with or someone that you wish you could be in

Lockdown with (like a superhero, a celebrity to entertain you, a famous

    chef, a motivational speaker, …..)

    Day 24 Classical.

Today you are required to sit quietly and (with an open mind) listen to a

piece of music. (Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major)

Write about the thoughts that went through your mind while you listened to

it. How did it make you feel and why? (Sad, calm, irritated, etc.) Did you

enjoy it? What did you like / not like about it?

Day 25 Write about your favourite family activity. What do you enjoy doing with

your family? It can be something you used to do prior to Lockdown or

something that you have started to do since Lockdown began.

Day 26 List a character defect you have. E.g. You always make excuses or you have

a bad temper, you enjoy gossiping. Write about the steps you can take to

    rid yourself of this defect.

Day 27 Write about your favourite meal. Consider the following points: What is it?

Why is it your favourite meal? Where is it from or who makes it? What

memories does it evoke in you?

  • Day 28 Write about what you enjoy doing in your spare time. (You may want to

focus on what you have been doing for fun, during Lockdown.)

Day 29 Write about your “happy place”, the place you most like to be. It can be

somewhere in your home, at a friend / relative, shopping centre, a park,

church, restaurant, holiday destination. It must be somewhere that you

have been and feel content in.

Day 30 What have you learnt about yourself as a result of completing this 30 day

    b. 2 000 1 000

    c. 50 100

  • The pattern 3 6 12 24 48 .......... may be called the repeated

doubling pattern that starts with 3.

    2. Write the first nine terms of the repeated doubling patterns that start with the

numbers in the left column of the table. The pattern for 13 has been completed

    17

    18

    19

Doubling can be used to do multiplication.

For example, 29 × 8 can be calculated as follows:

    8 doubled is 16, so 16 = 2 × 8 (step 1)

    16 doubled is 32, so 32 = 4 × 8 (step 2)

  • 32 doubled is 64, so 64 = 8 × 8 (step 3)

    64 doubled is 128, so 128 = 16 × 8 (step 4). Doubling again will go past 29 × 8.

    16 × 8 + 8 × 8 + 4 × 8 = (16 + 8 + 4) × 8 = 28 × 8.

    So 28 × 8 = 128 + 64 + 32 which is 224. So 29 × 8 = 224 + 8 = 232.

    3. Work as in the above example to calculate each of the following. Write only

    what you need to write.

    a. 37 × 21 (b) 17 × 41

    4. Continue each repeated halving pattern as far as you can:

    a. 1 024 512 256 128

    b. 64 000 32 000 16 000

Halving can also be used to do multiplication.

For example, 37 × 28 can be calculated as follows:

    100 × 28 = 2 800. Half of that is 50 × 28 which is half of 2 800, that is 1 400.

    Half of 50 × 28 is half of 1 400, so 25 × 28 is 700.

    10 × 28 = 280, so 25 × 28 + 10 × 28 = 980, so 35 × 28 =

    980. 2 × 28 = 2 × 25 + 2 × 3 = 56, so 37 × 28 is 980 + 56 =

    1 036.

    5. 80 × 78 = 6 240. Use this information to work out each of the following:

    a. 20 × 78 (b) 37 × 78

    D. Using multiplication to do division

    1. R7 500 must be shared between 27 netball players. The money is in R10 notes,

and no small change is available.

    (a) How much money will be used to give each player R100?

    (b) Do you think there is enough money to give each player R200?

    (c) Do you think there is enough money to give each player R300?

    (d) How much of the R7 500 will be left over, if each player is given R200?

    (e) Is there enough money left to give each player R50 more, in other words a total

    of R250 each?

  • (f) What is the highest amount that can be given to each player, so that less than

R270 is left over? Remember that you cannot split up the R10 notes.

    2. Work like you did in question 1 to solve this problem:

There is 4 580 m of string on a big roll. How many pieces of 17 m each can be cut

    from this roll?

Hint: You may start by asking yourself how much string will be used if you cut off

    100 pieces of 17 m each.

    3. Work like you did in questions 1 and 2 to solve this problem:

A shop owner has R1 800 available with which he can buy chickens from a farmer.

The farmer wants R26 for each chicken. How many chickens can the shop owner

    buy?

Division is called the inverse of multiplication.

Multiplication is called the inverse of division.

Multiplication and division are inverse operations.

    Topic 2: Cell phone towers

Investigation: A cell phone tower as a frame structure

A cell phone tower is an example of a frame structure. Why do we call this type of tower a

frame structure? Try to analyse the definition by looking at the many different pieces used to

build the tower. Designers and engineers use triangulation to stiffen and support frames. What

    is triangulation?

Activity 4 Case study – Examine existing towers strengthened by triangulation Evaluate the differences by thinking of the advantages and disadvantages of telephone systems. Class discussion: Compare a cell phone (mobile) to a landline phone. First, write a rough copy of the differences
