PRINCIPAL’S REPORT…

YONDR Day

Our mobile phone free day was a huge hit. We had all staff, students and visitors popping their mobile phones into Yondr cases and locking them away for the day. The aim was to raise awareness about the impact that mobile phones are having on our lives. We asked the students what they thought of going mobile phone free, here is some of what they had to say: “we talked to each other more”, “it made me realise how much time I spend on my phone”, “it got my friends off their games”, and “I didn’t get distracted by it in class”. This last one in particular is something that we are conscious of. Despite the fact mobile phones are not allowed to be used / out during class time, they are still a major source of distraction. The average teenager receives over 100 messages a day many of them arriving during class time. There was definitely a different feel in classes with this distraction eliminated. T&L Day

Last week saw all staff take part in a professional development day with renowned educational consultant Greg Sperling. Greg spent the day working with us on ways in which we can improve our teaching practice. As teachers, we are all committed to lifelong learning and the notion that there is always room for improvement. Staff are creating mini research projects with ideas pooled from the latest research into best/innovative teaching practices. Rebuild Update

We are only a few weeks away from completing the new Trade Wing. This includes a new woodwork classroom, a metalwork/plastics classroom, a new IT design hub and a new machine room. We plan on having classes running out of there by the start of June. Mr Sayn and Mr Coleman have a busy few weeks ahead with the move but we are excited about getting in there and using all the new cutting edge equipment.

NAPLAN Testing - Year 7 and 9 Students Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th May

NAPLAN will be taking place during Week Five of this term for all Year 7 and 9 students. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is also important to remember that NAPLAN tests are not pass/fail tests.

The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and principals which can be used to improve student achievement.

Participation and support All students in Year 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Support will be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. If you believe that your child is eligible for support due to disability, please contact Oliver Reeve at the college to discuss this.

Key dates:

Tuesday 15th May Wednesday 16th May Thursday 17th May

English - Language Conventions (45 mins)

and

English – Writing (40 mins)

English – Reading (65 mins)

Maths - numeracy with calculator (50 mins)

and

Maths - numeracy without calculator (10 mins)

What can my student bring into the test? At Daylesford, we recommend that students bring the following pencil case items into their NAPLAN tests:

- Blue or black pens

- Pencils (Grey lead)

- Pencil sharpener

- Eraser

- Scientific calculator - essential for the numeracy calculator NAPLAN

After the tests Later in the year you will receive your child’s personal NAPLAN report. This report will describe your child’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language conventions (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and Numeracy. The report will also show how your child performed in relation to national minimum standards. These standards describe the acceptable standards for students across Australia.

At Daylesford Secondary College we are confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN test will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy.

For more information about the tests, please visit the NAPLAN website at www.nap.edu.au or contact Oliver Reeve at the college.

Royal South Street Debating 2018

The school has entered 12 teams in Royal South Street Debating for 2018.

This means we have 50 debaters from Years 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 who are keen to represent the school.

We will run lunchtime meetings in C2 on Wednesdays from May 16th (next week).

We look forward to hearing our topics and certainly hope we get to argue that ‘Mobile phones

are detrimental to students.’ #YONDR

Greater Western Region - Intermediate and Senior Volleyball Final

GWR Intermediate and Senior Volleyball Final was held on 4 May. We had two teams represent the College in Volleyball at Warrnambool last week. It involved a very early start, I think it was the first morning in my teaching career that I had beat our cleaner Bill to school.

The boys played two games against Kings College and St Brigid’s College. The boys matched Kings College for the entirety of their match, however, couldn’t capitalise in the key moments. The standard of Volleyball was high and a great spectacle to watch. Against St Brigid’s College the boys fought hard but were outclassed by tough competition. They should be proud of competing in their two matches.

The girls only had one game for the day, unfortunately two other teams had pulled out at the last minute. They took on Murtoa College, after a slow start the girls started to find their groove to challenge Murtoa in the second and third sets. They served particularly well and pushed a team that had several state representative players. Their perseverance to compete until the end was a highlight for me.

I would like to congratulate all students involved and thank Carly Elderfield, Lucinda Lowe and Livi Leonard who stepped in with little notice to complete our girl’s team. Your contribution was greatly appreciated. A huge thank you to Colin Priest who trained both teams and who puts in hours of volunteer time to coach and teach our students. We are extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated person to assist our school.
