  • 4. Laws change according to society expectations
    Prior to 2006 Queensland landowners could bulldoze every single tree on their property without any regard for environmental impact
    From 1922 to until the 1990s women in public service had to resign from their position once they married
    Indigenous Australians only gained the right to vote in 1967 with over 96% of white Australians voting yes during a referendum
  • 5. Court is only the last resort
    There are many steps to take before parties become an applicant or respondent in the courtroom.
    Dealings with police
    Meetings with your solicitor
    Negotiations between solicitors
    Mediation (to be completed before lodging an application)
    Magistrates Court Mention (short hearing regarding paperwork requirements)
    Magistrates Court or District Court hearing (depending on the crime or amount of money involved)
    Continuing on to Supreme Court if case is warranted
    • From the date of seeing your solicitor to an application being lodged it may take months before the application is lodged
    • 6. It may be up to two years before your matter goes to trial, with many many court hearings in between
