The simplest questions are the most profound.
Where were you born?Where is your home?Where are you going? What are you doing?
Think about these once in a while and watch your answers change.
—Richard Bach
I’d rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I’d rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are.

There are a few rules for graduates to follow as they don their graduation ceremony attire.
Most schools require a cap and gown to be worn at the commencement ceremony, but many graduates struggle with the correct way to wear their cap and tassel.
The cap should be worn so that one of the points is directly in front, so that if looked at from above the cap would form a diamond on your head. Pull it down snugly so that the top of the cap is fl at with your head. It shouldn’t be pointing up or resting on top of a hairdo.
The tassel should be placed so that it hangs on the right side of your face. Once you have received your di-ploma, you should grab the tassel and turn it to the left side. Leave it in this position until you remove your cap after the ceremony.
How to wear your cap and tassel

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

(MS) -- Across the country, recent high school graduates are transitioning to freshman at colleges and universities. There will be many decisions facing the nation’s next crop of college students, from where to live to what courses to take to whether to join an academic club or fraternity/so-rority.
Perhaps the most vital decisions current and future col-lege kids must make are fi nancial ones. For most students, college is the fi rst time they’ll be managing their own money. While money management is most often a trial and error process for college kids, there are tricks to money management that today’s teenagers and young adults can use to their advantage.
• Don’t be late. Being late for class isn’t a good way for students to ingratiate themselves with their professors. But being late with bills can be an even worse idea. In addition to the negative impact paying bills late can have on a young person’s credit rating, late fees can pile up quickly. The average late fee for credit cards is $28, which is in addition to the balance remaining on the card itself. That’s $28 the average college kid can save simply by paying on time. Another way to avoid late fees is to save before splurging. That means, save up the cash to pay for your purchase and skip the credit card entirely.
• Use your student status to your advantage. Local businesses surrounding college campuses typically offer student discounts when students present their university I.D. Restaurants, movie theaters, music stores, etc., are among the many businesses that offer student discounts up to 20 percent. If going out to eat or having a date night at the movies, remember to bring along your student I.D. and reap the rewards.
• Watch ATM cash drain. Some ATMs charge in upwards of $3.50 for cash withdrawals, particularly ones that are “convenient” or close to campus. You can quickly deplete your savings with a few bucks withdrawn here and there. Instead, consider opening up an account at a local bank that offers good perks (not just fl uff incentives lur-ing college students) and no-fee ATM withdrawals. Your school also may be affi liated with a credit union that offers special plans to students, including good interest rates and discounts on other fi nancial items such as auto insurance.
Savvy ways to save when heading off to college

In part thanks to a still struggling economy, recent graduates are advised to have a Plan-B when it comes to fi nding a job after graduation.
Although there seems to be some improvement in the em-ployment arena, unemployment rates across North America continue to be at all-time highs. What’s more, companies have reduced the percentage of on-campus recruiting across the country, some by as much as 25 percent. That means that col-lege and high school graduates will be in the same league as other job seekers -- pounding the pavement to fi nd jobs.
As if the failing economy isn’t stressful enough, many grad-uates are fi nding their degrees and study concentrations may be undesireable at the moment. Students with concentrations in real estate, accounting, fi nance and other struggling sectors are facing even choppier waters when applying for jobs. They may have to think outside of the box or temporarily apply for a different type of position until the job outlook improves in their area of specialization.
Individuals searching for their fi rst real job should consider the following:
• Don’t rule out temporary positions. Some companies that don’t have the cash for permanent employees will use temp agencies to fi ll in open spots in the organization. While these positions may be temporary, they get a person in the door, their name on fi le and a chance to display their work ethic to higher-ups. When a full-time position does open, a former temporary employee may have the insider advantage.
• Consider a different job sector. While individuals may not want to think about the degree they’ve worked so hard for being out of fashion, they may have to consider this when job hunting. Because graduates have little to no real world job experience, that brand new degree in accounting doesn’t mean they can’t apply for a job in customer service. Look at the broad picture when seeking a job and don’t limit prospects.
• Networking really is key. Recent graduates are no doubt familiar with the term networking. Although many people would like to think they’ll be hired based on their merits and experience, many times it’s a “who you know” situation. Join-ing career groups, interning and keeping in touch with indi-viduals, volunteering and any other interaction with people is a great way to get your name out there. Recruiters are more likely to hire someone who is recommended than a person with just a well-written resume.
• Be on top of your game. Graduates have to ensure they’re polished thanks to the highly competitive nature of today’s job market. Common interview questions should be well rehearsed so they seem thought out but not rigid. Resumes should be con-cise, clear and free of any errors. Interview wardrobe should be professional. Now is the time to take care of all the smaller details that can lead to success.
• Don’t get discouraged. In a perfect job market it can take a few months to land that fi rst job. In a diffi cult economy, it will take even longer. Start your search early -- even before gradua-tion looms -- so that you will have time. Also, consider having a backup plan for work, such as a part-time job so you will have income while you are seeking your dream job. While it may not be ideal, you will have some fi nancial freedom to wait out a full-time position that fi ts your goals.

Graduation is only a concept. In real life every day you graduate. Graduation is a process that goes on until the last day of your life. If you can grasp that , you’ll make a diff erence.

Handwriting experts have noticed a decline in penman-ship, and the handwritten word for that matter. Many at-tribute this decline to the increased use of digital devices, such as mobile phones, computers and PDAs. A society that is short on time simply can’t set aside moments to write letters or cards, right?
In the past, penmanship was the mark of intelligence and indicative of social class. Today, many children barely get beyond the printing stage of lessons, never mind mas-tering cursive writing. However, penmanship is important and writing letters can be the perfect way to reestablish this lost art.
Letters are more personal than an e-mail or Tweet can ever be. A handwritten note says that you care about the person to whom the letter is addressed and about what you are saying because you spent a little more time composing your thoughts with pen and paper.
Ready to write the perfect letter? Follow these tips for success.
• Decide on your recipient and what you want to say to this person. Is it pressing news or do you simply desire to catch up?
• Choose your stationery. The tone of the letter will be indicated by the stationery you choose. A casual note could be on a fun printed paper. A more serious conversa-tion could be on linen paper.
• You don’t write letters everyday, so think of it as an event rather than a chore. This way you’ll enjoy the pro-cess that much more.
• Practice your penmanship beforehand. Chances are reliance on a computer or other electronics has resulted in penmanship skills faltering. After all, aside from signing checks or digital signature readers at retail stores, when do you actually have to put pen to paper anymore these days? Grab a piece of lined paper and practice writing a few sentences. Similar to riding a bicycle, with practice penmanship will come back to you.
• Think of the letter as a conversation. Start with an icebreaker or an aside comment that will eventually pave the way for the “meat” of your letter. Don’t over-plan the letter, otherwise it may seem forced. (Remember, writing is an art form and should be treated as such.)
• Personalize the letter by involving the recipient in the letter-writing process. Don’t make it all about yourself. Ask questions, recall moments you spent together and touch upon topics you know this person will enjoy.
• Finish the letter with something special. Perhaps it is a quote you love or a sentiment from your heart.
• Think about writing letters as an addition to or in re-placement of purchased greeting cards. This way you can customize the sentiments for special occasions and make the gift of your words ever more meaningful.

Editor’s note: This is one of two students from the WDC class of 2000 we’re checking in on this week to see how their life changed after being a “millennium graduate.”
My name is Jackie Gas-tecki and I graduated from Wadena-Deer Creek with the class of 2000. It is crazy to think that my class is ap-proaching the 10 year mark of being out of high school. It seems like yesterday we were walking through the halls and not having to worry about paying the bills.
Going through school at Wadena-Deer Creek, I found an interest in math and sci-ence. Mr. Klawitter was a great helper in keeping me interested in physics and anat-omy through my last couple years.
Along with being involved in the summer recreation pro-gram as a water safety instruc-tor and lifeguard, I participat-ed in a program at WDC that allowed me to “intern” at the hospital and learn more about the medical fi eld in hands on situations. With these opportu-nities, I left WDC with inten-tions to go to St. Scholastica and major in pre-med. After a year, I left St. Scholastica and decided to change my major to mechanical engineering and go to North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D.
I fi nished college in 2005 and started working for Stern Industries in Baxter as a qual-ity engineer. I went back for my master’s in 2008 and graduated from Benedictine University with my MBA, while continuing to work for Stern Industries. My current job has brought me a lot of opportunities that I never thought I would have expe-rienced. I have been able to travel to places all over the U.S. and even to Asia a few times. It is amazing at how much you can learn about another culture by just visit-ing their community. I have learned to appreciate my own surroundings more by learn-ing about the differences that
other cultures exhibit. That is a life lesson that I, personally, couldn’t have learned in col-lege or high school.
The past couple years have also been very interesting and educational. With the econo-my taking a turn for the worse and having one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression, it’s amazing how I learned day by day about how simple things can change people’s lives so drastically. It made me realize that there were times that I was being wasteful and not making the wisest decisions about how I was spending my money. I guess through the hard times, collectively, I learned quite a bit and realized that it is very important to make sure to not let yourself live beyond your means; it can get you in a lot of trouble if you do live be-yond your means. It is great to see the economy starting to pick up again and I hope that we don’t have to see that sort of recession again for a while.
While I am defi nitely not doing what I envisioned myself doing 10 years ago, there is nothing that I would change. Every hard time and fun time has been a defi ning moment and has helped shape me to who I am today. I still think that it is crazy how fast these 10 years have gone by since I was just a care free kid at WDC, but I always remem-ber my parents telling me that as you get older, every year seems to go by faster. Along with many other lessons I learned in life, they weren’t always as wrong as I thought they were when I was a teen.
Major change led to major life change

Editor’s note: This is one of two students from the WDC class of 2000 we’re checking in on this week to see how their life changed after being a “millennium graduate.”
I can hardly believe that it has been 10 years since gradu-ation! Since leaving WDC 10 years ago, I have had more opportunities available than I could have imagined.
When I fi rst started at NDSU I began with major in biology with the intention of being a science and math teacher. But during my ori-entation, one of the science faculty announced that North Dakota State Univesity was in the process of starting a ra-diologic sciences program. So during my sophomore year, I became a radiologic science major.
When it was time to do an internship I was lucky enough to be accepted into the radiol-ogy program at MeritCare in Fargo. To be honest, I had no idea what I was in for. During my fi rst rotation down in the emergency room, I almost passed out watching a doctor put a chest tube into a patient. After that I started to wonder if I had chosen the right career path. But the more I saw, and the more hands-on the work became, the more I loved it
and I wanted to learn more. After I fi nished school
and received my degree, I was lucky enough to get a job at Johns Hopkins Hos-pital in Baltimore. And the fi rst thing that I noticed was the sheer size of everything. I swear that you could eas-ily fi t Bluffton in the hospital and still have room to spare. I worked for the fi rst two years in outpatient radiology. Most of my time was spent work-ing in surgery, assisting with pain management epidurals, and working in the orthopedic clinic. Then in early 2008, I transferred down to the ER and I love it! My days are al-ways different and that is part of the excitement. We can go from having almost nothing to
do, to having four or fi ve trau-mas in a matter of minutes. Plus now I’ve gone from be-ing the shy X-ray student who almost passed out and had no clue as to what it going on to being one of the people that the students look to when they have questions about what to do next.
Also I have had the op-portunity to work with the Baltimore Orioles working part-time to take X-rays of the players when it is necessary. Plus my career, and where I work, has allowed me to meet several politicians, entertain-ers, CEOs, and other heads of state.
But I would say that the largest change that I have gone through in the past 10
years is having the opportuni-ty to discover who I really am. I have allowed (sometimes forced) myself to go out and ask questions about what else is out there. Before I fi nished high school I was comfort-able with the idea of being a science and math teacher. Now I am doing things with my life that I didn’t know were possible. I had never considered the possibility of working at the best hospital in the country and working for a professional sports team. And as far as I’m concerned, there is still a lot out there for me to do yet. Believe me, when I say that working in the ER at Johns Hopkins is rarely dull and never boring.
Bluff ton could fi t inside my hospital!

On Saturday, May 15, Pete Phil-lips received the DFL endorsement for Minnesota House District 10B. Phillips is a small business owner from Wadena. He stepped down from his position on the Wadena City Council to pursue a seat in the Minnesota Legislature two years ago. His opponent is Mark Mur-dock, the Republican incumbent from Ottertail.
Phillips credited his staff, orga-nization and planning in securing the unanimous endorsement.
“I am humbled and honored to carry the DFL endorsement,” Phil-lips said in a statement following the Senate District 10 endorsing convention in Henning.
“The main message of this campaign has and will be people,” Phillips said. “I have worked very hard preparing for this job. The
campaign already has tremendous support and momentum and it all stems from people.”
Phillips said the most important thing he has learned is you must ask the people what they want and vote accordingly. He also said he feels that his high level of involvement in state and local government will allow him to be effective as soon as he takes offi ce.
“People just feel abandoned by their representation in St. Paul,” Phillips said. “I will form a rela-tionship with every community in this district. I will vote in their interest.”
Phillips said he has seen a tre-mendous amount of support from people in St. Paul. The State DFL, many advocate groups and current legislators have encouraged and supported him. Phillips said he is
proud to have the support but was quick to bring up he will not work for St. Paul, but District 10B. He did say the wisdom and assistance in his campaign is more than wel-come.
Sen. Dan Skogen received the DFL endorsement for the Senate District 10 seat he currently holds. Skogen was not able to attend the convention on Saturday as the Leg-islature was wrapping up the 2010 session. Phillips said he had talked to Skogen just prior to the conven-tion.
“Dan was disappointed he could not make it,” Phillips said. “But we all know Dan — he is committed to his job. He stayed and took care of his district.”
Phillips said he looks forward to working closely with Skogen through the election.
