Grace Notes VOLUME 153 RYE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ▪ 882 BOSTON POST ROAD ▪ RYE ▪ NY ▪10580 OCTOBER 2015
Imagine there’s no scoreboard…
You can feel it in the air! There is enthusiasm - there is excite-
ment! The Imagine Initiative in all its many facets is rolling out
for all to see. Imagine! Beyond all the good that goes on here
each day, imagine what our church can be! An additional worship
opportunity. Fully funding our third pastor to better serve the
many children and youth of this church. The stained-glass win-
dows of the sanctuary restored to their original brilliance to match
the beautiful new paint job. New opportunities to gather and grow
and serve together. Imagine what God can do – in and through and
beyond our dreams!
Something else can be felt in the air as well. After all, for the
dreams to become reality means we have to talk about topics that
many wish we would avoid: generosity, money, giving to Imagine
above and beyond what we already give for the annual stewardship
campaign. At times it can get a little uncomfortable. Yet we fol-
low and bear the name of one who never shied away from talking
about such things. “Where your treasure is, there your heart is
also,” Jesus said. It may not be the “root of all evil” (a common
bible misquote), but he knew that how we view our resources and
the decisions we make regarding those resources says a great deal
about who we are and the state of our hearts. It can, and probably
at times should make us a bit uncomfortable.
But often, I think our discomfort comes from a misguided sense
of what God is looking at and asking for from us. The scene I
found in a nearby church basement captured that sense of it for me
- Jesus as keeper of the scoreboard. Perhaps we operate with a
sense that God is more interested in keeping score of who among
us is the most faithful and most generous. We think that a big gift
to Imagine means that someone is more faithful, more spiritual,
more what Jesus is looking for. We get nervous when we hear of
someone giving more. We look down upon those who give less.
That’s not the Jesus I see. Instead, Jesus showed us a God who
doesn’t keep track of rights and wrongs, or the size of our mone-
tary gifts. Instead he showed us a God of great generosity – a God
of grace who welcomes us as we are – who forgives again and
again, who loves beyond measure. The divine scoreboard long ago
was disconnected and shut off. It is we, in our misguided worry
about whether we measure up and our endless competitive and
comparative instinct, who drag it out of the basement and turn it
back on again.
Instead, Jesus invites us…and, yes, challenges us. Forgiven
much, richly blessed, gifted in so many ways, how might we live a
more faithful and generous life? How might we more fully partici-
pate in God’s vision and God’s active work making this world
more just, more loving, and more whole? How might we trust God
even more than we do, to be at work in us and through us?
Imagine that . . . This month, as pledge cards for both Imagine and Annual Stew-
ardship arrive at your home, as you think and pray and talk about
what numbers to write down, and as we commit ourselves and our
resources to the future in worship on October 18, imagine the
scoreboard off. Imagine instead the next step that God is calling
you to take, not just in your giving, but in your life and faith.
Imagine . . .

Our annual (renamed last year) Peace
and Global Witness Offering will be
received on October 4. The Mission &
Outreach Committee asks for your gen-
erosity and prayers in support of two
organizations that are working to address
the Syrian refugee crisis.
While on a recent visit to church part-
ners assisting Syrian refugees, staff of
the Presbyterian Mission Agency
watched the children closely. Violence
in Syria has left 250,000 dead, and four
million refugees. Such chaos and trauma
erodes communities and places great
stress on families, and the children often
suffer. Even in such difficult circum-
stances, though, the children were seen
laughing and playing, singing tunes they
learned in their schools back home, but
singing new words—“Yesterday, we
lived in nice houses. Today, we live in
tents. Tomorrow, we may go home.”
This is the hope for many of the Syrian
children and families living as refugees.
During recent weeks, images of Syrian
families escaping violence and seeking
refuge in neighboring countries and Eu-
rope have unsettled our peace and bro-
ken our hearts. Now in its third year, as
the violence in the region continues, the
conflict continues to cause deprivation
and uncertainty. The world finds itself in
need of a profound witness to the Prince
of Peace.
In the letter to the Ephesians, we hear
the words, “Peace be to the WHOLE
community,” a reminder that the peace
of Christ is not fully realized in each of
us until all of us work for healing and
wholeness in every place of violence.
How appropriate, then, to hear these
words at a time when the effects of vio-
lence are so clearly seen. The Peace and
Global Witness Offering provides op-
portunities for Presbyterians to respond
to cultures of violence, around the corner
and around the world, from our local
neighborhood to the Syrian refugees.
- Our national Presbyterian Church,
through gifts to the 2015 Peace &
Global Witness Offering, will support
Syrian refugees who still hope for an
end to violence and a peaceful future
for their children. Because of the work
of our church partners in Lebanon, the
children of Syrians displaced by war
and sheltering in camps will be able to
resume their education, disrupted
when their families fled the conflict.
Your gift makes it possible for chil-
dren to learn and teachers to teach;
these are tools of hope for people
struggling to make a life in camps and
nourish hope for a return to their
homes. Your gift helps these children
sing a new song.
- Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF /
Doctors Without Borders) is on the
very front lines responding to the Syri-
an refugee crisis. As the bitter conflict
in Syria continues, people are suffer-
ing immensely, not only from the di-
rect consequences of war, but also
from having to leave their homes and
belongings, and having their regular
lives and medical treatments interrupt-
ed. MSF has established programs
inside Syria and in neighboring coun-
tries to tend to those affected. Vio-
lence and insecurity, attacks on health
facilities and medical workers, the
absence of government authorization,
and the reneging by armed groups on
guarantees of safety for aid teams
have been some of the main obstacles
to a more extensive program of medi-
cal humanitarian aid. At the end of
2014, MSF had 729 staff working in
Syria. MSF first began working in the
country in 2009.

“L“LIVINGIVING AA FFULLYULLY GGENEROUSENEROUS LLIFEIFE”” Sunday mornings, October 4-18,
9:00-9:45 a.m., Westminster Room
This series invites participants to be engaged in reflection about the themes lifted up in our Imagine Reflection Journal. 10/04 Treasure and Time 10/11 Wisdom and Work 10/18 Spirituality, Soul, and Sacrifice
Adult Education
In October, Adult Education programs
will continue to focus on support of the
Imagine Initiative, using the Personal
Reflections Journal as a guide.
Throughout the month, we will focus
on the last three sections of the Journal.
Those three weeks will cover the Journal
subjects on the following themes:
Treasure and Time: Sunday,
October 4, led by Dr. Miller.
Wisdom and Work: Sunday,
October 11, led by Nancy and Bob
Steed.
Spirituality, Soul, and Sacrifice:
Sunday, October 18, led by Rachael
Huntley.
The following Sunday morning, October
25, in the Westminster Room from 9:00
to 9:45 a.m., we will begin a series on
“Parables from the Backside,” based on
a book by J. Ellsworth Kalas. On Tues-
day evening, October 27, in the West-
minster Room from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.,
Rev. Love will begin a book study on
“Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of
the American Elite and the Way to a
Meaningful Life.”
For details on these programs and the
many other Adult Education offerings
for the fall, see the brochure “Imagining
our Journey Together” available on
RPC’s website or at convenient locations
in the church.
CORRECTION: The date for the
panel discussion on “A Culture of Vio-
lence: No One is Immune” will be
changed due to a conflict with a major
high school program. Watch for the new
date in the weekly RPC update.
The Adult Education Committee, as
well as the Co-Pastors, hope to see in-
creasing numbers of RPC members par-
ticipating in the wealth of opportunities
for growing our faith and our under-
standing of God through this fall’s
offerings.

Anything is a prayer of surrender that will spark something.
A prayer that will move you to stop chasing things that just
make you feel happy and start living a surrendered life that
matters.
Our first meeting will be in the Library and after that we
will meet in various members’ homes. If you would like to
be on the email list for this study, contact Rachael Huntley.

Excellent Sheep:
The Miseducation of the American Elite and the
Way to a Meaningful Life
Tuesdays, 7:30 p.m., in the Library,
October 27, November 3, 10, 17
As a professor at Yale, author William Deresiesicz saw
something that troubled him. His students, some of the na-
tion’s brightest minds, were adrift when it came to the big
questions: how to think critically and creatively, and how to
find a sense of purpose. Are the high schools and colleges of
our young people turning out conformists without a com-
pass? Dan Love will lead this thought-provoking book study.
“P“PARABLESARABLES FROMFROM THETHE BBACKSIDEACKSIDE””
Sunday mornings, October 25-November 22 9:00-9:45 a.m., Westminster Room
Using J. Ellsworth Kalas’ book, we’ll gain new insights into Jesus’ parables as approached through the “back side”; though a unique starting point, a creative retelling, a new “lens,” or the eyes of a minor character.

Music Notes, Rachael Huntley, New Member Classes, YAV
From Jason
Charneski
Thank you for the
incredible welcome
to RPC! Your encouraging words, your
energy, and your awareness of the Holy
Spirit’s presence alongside you on this
journey of faith have brought great joy
to me. I hope you will oblige me for
some sentences of reflection upon my
time with you, brief though it is, thus far.
Many things affected me in profound
ways on September 13 (my first Sunday
“on the bench”). I share two things here.
The first was that we were together in
offering our song in worship. I felt at
ease within the first few beats of the first
stanza of the opening hymn. There was
no hesitation or reluctance; rather, a
willingness to embrace the adventure. I
pray that we continue to have such open-
ness. The second was a photo, with cap-
tion, that Dan posted on the church’s
Facebook page (if you’ve not “liked” the
church’s Facebook page, please do so).
The photo was of a rainbow that ap-
peared that evening, with part of it,
seemingly, intersecting the spire. The
caption read: “As Imagine begins and a
new music director starts, it seems like a
good sign….” I was rendered speechless
and tears welled up in my eyes and cas-
caded down my cheeks.
Imagine, dear friends, what RPC will
do and become and how its music minis-
try can support, enhance, and inspire it.
Ever forward, Jason
New Member Orientation Classes
Sundays, October 18 and 25,
in the Library following 10:00 a.m. Worship
Perhaps you’ve been coming to RPC a long time, or perhaps you are brand new
to the area or the church. Either way, if you’ve thought about taking a further step
into the life and ministry of RPC, this is a great time to explore it. All those who
are interested in finding out more about what it means to be a member of the Rye
Presbyterian Church are invited to take part in the New Member Orientation clas-
ses. The classes are Sundays, October 18 and 25, immediately following worship
in the church Library. Childcare will be available.
In the classes, we will explore what it means to be a Presbyterian in general, and
what it means to actively live out our faith together as a part of this particular
church. In addition to the Sunday classes, for those choosing to join the church,
there will be a dessert meeting with the leadership of the church on Sunday even-
ing, November 8, at 7:00 p.m. This is a time to meet the officers of the church and
for the Session to meet briefly to approve the new class for church membership.
Public welcome and recognition of the new members will take place during wor-
ship on Sunday, November 15.
Anyone wishing to find out more about joining the church should contact Rose-
mary Annunziato in the church office – [email protected] or 967-0842x11.
For those of you who were with us on
Sunday, August 30, we had the joy of
commissioning three Young Adult Volun-
teers on behalf of the Presbyterian Church
(USA). For more about this “peace
corps” type of ministry related to our de-
nomination, click here.
We now have blog addresses for two of
the YAV’s. You can read about Megan
Nibert’s service in Indianapolis at https://

ous questions, and great answers by Rachael, the presbytery
unanimously approved Rachael for ordination to the office of
Minister of Word and Sacrament (Teaching Elder) in the
Presbyterian Church (USA). Rachael's ordination will take
place in our sanctuary on Saturday, November 7, at 4:00 p.m.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for this special ordination service

Sunday School
We have a fun October in store here at
RPC Sunday School. We will continue
to be in sync with what the adults are
doing in worship. This means that the
same scripture the adults hear about in
the sermon will also be explored by the
children in Sunday School! The kids will
also continue working hard on their own
versions of the Imagine Journals. We
hope this leads to interesting discussions
among the whole family and we hope to
see you in Sunday School soon!
Children’s Chapel will be on October
11 and the kids will join Lisa Rawson on
October 25 for Singing Our Faith.
Our Family Fellowship event this
month is the super fun annual Pumpkin
Carving! Come enjoy a pizza dinner and
carve your Halloween pumpkin at RPC.
Let us take care of picking up the sloppy,
pumpkin gut mess! The Pumpkin Carv-
ing is on Sunday, October 25, from 5:00-
6:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room. RSVP
to Rachael Huntley so that we can be
sure to have enough pizza and pumpkins.
High School Youth Group
All 9th–12th graders are welcome at
RPC’s High School Youth Group. We
have a packed month! On Saturday, Oc-
tober 3, we will meet at 10:00 a.m. at
The Sharing Shelf to help sort clothes for
those in need. On Wednesdays, October
7 and 21, we will meet from 6:45-8:00
p.m. in the youth rooms for fellowship
and a chance to see how our faith can
impact our lives. On Sunday, October
18, we will spend the evening rock
climbing at The Rock Club! Contact
Rachael Huntley with any questions.
Middle School Connection
Connection is open to all 6th –8th graders.
We’ll meet on October 7 and 21 this
month from 5:30–6:45 p.m. for a pizza
dinner, games, learning, and fun. Gather
in the youth rooms downstairs under the
Assembly Room. Hope to see your mid-
dle schooler there!
Please let Dan Love know if you’d
like to be on the email list.
Confirmation 2016
Briefed on all the
details and hopes for
the upcoming year, a
new confirmation
class is underway!
The entire class gath-
ered on September 27
to kick the year off and get to know each
other better. We will jump right in with
classes in the late afternoon on Sundays
starting on October 18 and 25. Soon
they will be wrestling with the deeper
questions of the Christian faith: Who IS
God? How can this world be both so
beautiful and so broken? Where do I fit
in the larger story of what God is up to?
Please keep this year’s class in your
prayers throughout the coming months!
Classes:
October 18, last names A-L at 4 p.m.;

Monthly Reflection
A PRAYER FOR HOLY LEISURE
I confess to you, dear God, that holy
leisure is far from me. I have a minute
of empty space and I rush to fill it. I act,
I do, I talk. Why can’t I simply be still?
*
You need to know, my child, that I will
not compete for your attention. If you
choose to be distracted, I will not force
myself on you.
*
O Lord, it frightens me that I could
crowd you out of my life. Plant in me a
longing for stillness. Create in me a
hunger for open, empty space.
*
As you wish.

Rye Presbyterian Nursery School
Greetings to the RPC Community
from Kristin Bassett Kumar and
Emma Whitman
New and returning RPNS families filled
the Assembly Room last month for our
“Back to School Night.”
Parents and staff were welcomed by
School Board Chair, Callie Erickson;
Director, Emma Whitman; and Church
Pastor, John Miller.
The night began with a brief discus-
sion about separation and how we sup-
port families through the “transfer of
trust” from parent to teacher at the start
of the school year. Dr. Whitman intro-
duced the teachers and talked about up-
coming events and ways parents can get
involved.
Before heading to their children’s
classrooms, everyone enjoyed watching
the premier of our fifth educational film
entitled “New York Public Library and
Train Study” filmed and produced by
RPNS parent Leon Sculti. The film fol-
lows Mrs. Kumar’s and Mrs. Fiore’s four
-year-old class as they embark on an in-
depth study of New York City. The vid-
eo highlights how the children’s ideas
influenced their play and led to the inte-
gration of math, science, and literacy
into the classroom. To watch the stu-
dents learn about the New York Public
Library and the train system into Grand
Central terminal, visit the homepage of
the Rye Presbyterian Nursery School
website at www.rpnskids.org.
