The Word of God* Collect of the Day

Presider The Lord be with you.People And also with you. Presider Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of

reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lesson: 1 John 1:1–2:2Lector We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes,

what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us—we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 133

Cantor Oh, how good and pleasant | it is, * when brethren live toge|ther in unity!

All It is like fine oil upon | the head * that runs down | upon the beard,

It is like the dew of | Hermon * that falls upon the | hills of Zion.

You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me; * blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.

* The Holy Gospel: John 20:19–31 The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John.People Glory to you, Lord Christ. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the

disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.

Sunday Adult ForumSundays through July 89:15–10 a.m. • Common RoomJesus and the Gospels: The figure of Jesus has tantalized both Christians and non-Christians who have sought definitive answers to questions about his words, his acts and even his very existence. For most of the last 2,000 years, the search for those answers has begun with the Gospels, but the Gospels themselves raise puzzling questions about both Jesus and the religious movement within which these narratives were produced. They also provide sometimes bewilderingly diverse images of Jesus.

Abiding PrayerMondays7:15–8:30 p.m. • Common RoomGod is Love: The Heart of All Creation series continues and builds on the works of Thomas Keating over the past 30+ years, beginning with the Spiritual Journey series. It offers a vision of hope and a view of reality that at once integrates the sciences, religion and humankind’s place in the cosmos as divine in origin, unifying in purpose and unfolding in its grandeur. Please contact Jerry Grabher for more information, [email protected] or 816.590.6205.

Women’s Bible StudyTuesdays12:30–1:30 p.m. • Common RoomThe Social Justice Bible Challenge, which is available in the Cathedral Bookstore for $15, features 40 Bible passages with reflections by spiritual leaders and writers from around the world, along with questions to help initiate discussions and prayers. Each week, members of the group read a passage and reflection aloud at the beginning of the hour...and then see where the spirit takes them. Usually the group completes discussion of one passage/reflection per week. Sometimes more, sometimes fewer. All are welcome. If you have the inclination, but not the book, come anyway and someone will share!

The Feast of the AnnunciationTomorrow, April 9, marks the celebration of the Feast of the Annunciation. This year, because the feast occurred during Holy Week, it was transferred from the customary date of March 25. The feast, dated nine months before the celebration of Christmas Day, commemorates the visitation of the Virgin Mary by the angel Gabriel. During the visit, recounted in the first chapter of Luke’s Gospel, the angel greets Mary and announces that she will be the mother of Jesus. Mary assents in faith to God’s invitation.

“In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, since I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.”

(Luke 1:26-38, New Revised Standard Version)

Collect for the AnnunciationPour your grace into our hearts, O Lord, that we who have known the incarnation of your Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
