INTRODUCTIONGPS project was developed in 1973 for

American army. GPS was created and realized by department of defence.

GPS is a space based navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather anywhere on the earth.

It was originally run with 24 satellite. The first satellite launch in 1989 and last in 1994.

The satellite constellation consist of 24 satellite constellation.

These satellites are positioned in six earth centered orbits with four satellites in each plane.

The orbital period of a gps is 11 hour and 58 min. They orbit at height of 20,180 km above earths surface.

Control segment The CS consists of 3 entities:

Master Control SystemMonitor StationsGround Antennas

Control segment A master control

station tracks all satellite and ensure they are operating properly and compute their position in space.

Master control station is situated at Falcon air force base Colorado , USA

Monitor Stations

There are six monitor stations Each of the monitor stations checks the

exact altitude, position, speed, and overall health of the orbiting satellites.

User segment It includes millions of

civil, commercial , scientific users.

It includes american defence forces as well as other forces.

Determining Position Of Object

For determining the position of a object , GPS uses the Trilateration method.

Trilateration is the process of determining locations of points by measurement of distance using circles and spheres.

Trilateration have practical applications in surveying and navigation.

Applications Gps aircraft tracking Vehicle, person, pet tracking system Map making Disaster relief/emergency services Military purpose Sag measurement in overhead line

Page 17: gps

Sag measurement in overhead line

A gps device is placed at the midpoint of the conductor

Due to the effect of ice and wind, clearance from the ground is reduced

This reduction can be calculated with the help of gps
