Graduate Program in Interna0onal Affairs www.gpia.info PROJECTS from SUMMER 2010 KOSOVO Students prepared a report for the government special envoy to the ethnically‐ divided Mitrovica municipality on the system of governance ‐ and misgovernance ‐ of the city’s Serbian‐dominated sec0on. The report generated na0onal headlines and UN cri0cism. NEPAL Students composed a report for Advocacy Forum looking at Nepal’s transi0onal jus0ce, advoca0ng a vic0ms‐based approach as the country con0nues its journey from civil war to draQing a new democra0c cons0tu0on. Six students published op‐eds in na0onal media. ARGENTINA Students designed and established a framework and baseline for a five year evalua0on program, monitoring efforts of state and non‐state actors to remedy and develop the highly‐polluted La Matanza‐ Riachuelo watershed area in metropolitan Buenos Aires. RIO DE JANEIRO Students created a documentary film about the right to housing in one of Rio's largest favela communi0es affected by landslides and figh0ng forced evic0on by city planners. ETHIOPIA Students conducted a project assessment for Oxfam of micro‐insurance solu0ons to food insecurity in the Horn of Africa. UGANDA Students worked with Slum Women's Ini0a0ve for Development to design a prototype of an affordable, replicable house. Interna0onal Field Program A unique opportunity for our students, and a signature program for the university Since its 2002 incep<on, the Interna0onal Field Program has provided approximately half of GPIA students with overseas field experiences through work with NGOs, IOs, and government and local agencies, as well as a unique link between classroom curriculum and the world of prac0ce. The Field: Where Theory and Prac<ce Work Together In keeping with the university’s guiding intent, the Interna0onal Field Program merges theory with prac0ce, offering a faculty‐supervised environment in which students apply classroom knowledge while ac<vely working in the field. Each summer, the GPIA sends students to work alongside development professionals on some of the world’s most pressing problems—from disease preven0on and human rights to environmental sustainability and disaster relief. To date, 501 students from GPIA, Milano School for Management and Urban Policy, and Parsons School for Design have par0cipated in the IFP. The IFP is not only a centerpiece of our educa<onal and programma<c objec<ves, but is significant and unique within the universe of interna0onal affairs degree programs – and one of our strongest recruitment draws. A stated a^rac0on for many students who enroll, it also proves to be a founda<onal experience for the majority who par0cipate, presen0ng an ideal training and research vehicle for both the prac<ce and thesis op<ons within GPIA. Through the IFP they can see diverse topics covered in their courses play out within ongoing public debates or social processes in specific locali0es.
