Employability Skills Self

Evaluation

Employability Skills are the critical skills you need in the workplace and in society. Employability and

transferable skills can be classified as either generic (People Skills – Communication skills) or specific

(Measurable skills – Use of tools or Typing speed).

The purpose of this activity is to identify projects/activities/courses either from school or in the

community that have helped you develop these skills and for you to identify how they will help you once

you have graduated.

Please look at the examples below. Use them to help you complete the chart found on the next page.

You will be able to use the information for your resume and future interviews.

Employability Skills

School or Community project/activity/course/event

that developed the skill.

How did this activity/course

help you develop this

skill?

How will you use this skill

once you have graduated?

Problem Solving / Critical Thinking

1. Making a board game project in school. 2. Playing in the school Rugby tournament that was at the same time as my after school job.

1. I had to think about all of the different choices a player would make playing the game. 2. I had to prioritize things in life and figure out what was important to me. I had to communicate this with my boss and my coach.

1. I am better at thinking about all the angles/sides to a problem or choice. 2. I will be able to communicate more clearly and I will be able to politely explain to others what is important to me.

Turn the page and fill in the chart, see sample assignment on page 10 for ideas.

To Whom It May Concern

Re: Joe Smith

I have known Joe Smith for almost two years, including one season on the school soccer team. He has always been respectful, and a team player.

He was always on time for the games and practices, and willing to take constructive criticism. We often engaged in discussions after practice about various sports teams and I was impressed with not only his knowledge of the teams but the dynamics of the players. He was always respectful of my opinion even when it differed from his. I can always count on a friendly greeting whenever or wherever I meet him.

I believe that he will find a place for himself in the community as he is responsible and productive. When Joe puts his mind to a meaningful matter, he can accomplish almost anything. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information and/or clarification.

Cordially, (Your reference signs the letter here) S. Brown Courtenay Soccer League Coach

Jane Doe Cool Threads 1000 Cliffe Ave. Courtenay, BC V9N 2B2

Dear Ms. Jane Doe,

I am interested in applying for the retail salesperson position at Cool Threads, which was recently advertised through Work Experience at VANIER SECONDARY SCHOOL. I am very interested in this position and believe that my current skills and passion for clothing make me an excellent candidate for the job.

As a high school student, I have developed organizational and communication skills through my involvement in school sports and by coaching youth soccer. I enjoy working with others and interacting with people. I have taken Accounting 11 which has given me the business and math skills needed for working in retail. I have enclosed my resume with further details.

I would enjoy being a part of your store and am available for an interview at your convenience. You can contact me at 334-0000 or leave a message at 331-0000. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely, (sign your name here) Joe Smith
