Located at 235 W. Walnut in Canton (across from Graham Hospital) are Graham Wellness Center Exercise Specialists who routinely perform health screenings and assessments throughout our community, oftentimes through a program offered by local businesses for the betterment of its employees. In addition to routine screenings, participants, such as those employed by the City of Canton, are able to enjoy working out in our spacious 5,000 square foot facility equipped with lockers and individual showers. The Wellness Center offers a wide variety of exercise equipment, free weights, and warm up/cool down areas. A state-of-the-art kitchen/classroom is used for education and food preparation demonstrations.
Focusing on both prevention and rehabilitation, Graham Wellness Center offers several wellness options. To learn more, please contact Jake Green or Andy French at (309) 647-4087.
Eric and John, City employees, have made some positive changes in their lives. Be sure to read what has worked for them on page 6.

Jake & Andy – Graham Wellness Center
Message from the PresidentAs we close out one fiscal year at the end of June and begin
our FY 2017 on July 1, 2016, there seems to be no end in sight to all the growth at Graham Health System.
Construction
1. GMG – New 32,000 sq.ft. addition will open in mid-September: New Convenient Care, Outpatient Physical & Occupational Therapy, warm water therapy pool, Cardiac Rehab, Illinois Cancer Care, and (3) new physician “pods.”
2. Skilled Nursing Remodel – (12) of the (20) new patient rooms/beds are open and the remaining (8) will be completed in December.
3. Surgery Remodel Plans – Major addition will begin in September of 2016 and take approximately 2 1/2 years to complete.
4. Lab Remodel – The Lab will relocate to the second floor of the hospital in December, and the current Lab space will see a total remodel over the Winter/Spring of 2017, reopening in June of 2017.
5. Lobby Remodel – Look for the main entrance to Graham Hospital and the Lobby inside to get a facelift, as we add another elevator to serve the new Surgery addition. This work should take place in the next 12 months.
6. We will add (24) more overhead patient lifts in FY 2017 to ensure our patients/staff have the safest environment possible in which to recover / work in.
Physicians and Providers 1. Dr. Michael Kent joined Dr.
Ramayya Gowda in early June and “hit the ground running.” We are excited to have Dr. Kent and his family here in Canton and at Graham Health System, and excited about this new partnership in General Surgery. I’m confident we will continue to grow and add Surgical Services, and that
Dr. Kent will be a great complement to Dr. Gowda. 2. Dr. Gary Shaw’s practice (Ear, Nose & Throat)
continues to grow, adding a Voice & Swallowing Clinic this summer. We have partnered with Dr. Ira Uretzky (Peoria ENT) to make sure we can adequately cover all the present volume. We expect Dr. Uretzky to be with us through December of 2016.
3. Dr. Keith Ifft (Anesthesiologist) joined the medical staff and will serve as lead Anesthesiologist at Graham, joining Drs. Adrienne
Williams and Ron Mejzak. 4. New Nurse Practitioner Lynette Eeten and new Physician Assistant Tiffanny Connolly joined Graham this Spring, along with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Ryan Deushane. Tiffany and Lynette will work in Convenient Care and rotate through all (4) GMG Clinics, while Ryan will be in Surgery and the Endoscopy Suite.
•Bistro Change – Black Maple Coffee & Espresso now occupies the space where our GMG Bistro was (Ground Floor). We are excited about Emily Juraco and her team expanding their services in Canton, via the GMG Canton Clinic. Look for an expanded menu of both drinks and food.
•School & Sports Physicals - Please schedule ASAP with a GMG provider by calling: (309) 647-0201. Sometimes it’s the only time over the course of the year that your child sees their Primary Care provider.
•RN’s needed – As we continue to grow, we continue to need additional staff members. If you are interested in a career at Graham, or know of someone who might be, please share with them that Graham is hiring, and that we would love to meet with you/them and explain all the benefits of being part of the Graham family. We would welcome the chance to talk about our generous scholarship program, as well.
•Foundation Event - Our latest Foundation undertaking is the “Keepin’ It Reel” Fishing Fundraiser, August 27th at Giant Goose Ranch (Canton). This will be a fun morning for the entire family to join the Foundation
“My Physical Therapist, Renee, did a wonderful job. I so appreciate her efforts in going above and beyond, and calling the doctors for me.”

The mission of Rock Steady Boxing is to empower people to fight back against Parkinson’s Disease (PD).
Fast Stats Background
What We Do
What’s a Class Like?
• SomeoneisdiagnosedwithParkinson’sDiseaseevery9seconds.Itisestimated that there are 1.5 million people in the US with PD, and 1 out of 10 over the age of 55 will be diagnosed.
• RockSteadyBoxingisthefirstofitskind,non-contactboxingprogramin the country dedicated to people with PD.
• Participantsaremenandwomenwhorangeinagefromlate30’sto90’s.
Though it may seem surpris-ing, this non-contact boxing –inspired fitness routine is dra-matically improving the ability of people with Parkinson’s to live independent lives.
RSB enables people with Parkinson’s Disease to fight their disease by providing non-contact boxing-style fitness programs that improve their quality-of-life and sense of efficacy and self-worth. Recent studies also suggest that intense exercise pro-grams may be “neuro-protective,” actually working to delay the progression of symptoms. RSB provides encouragement through “tough love” approach, inspiring maximum effort, speed, strength, balance and flexibility. Boxing works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout. RSB classes have proven that anyone, at any level of Parkinson’s, can actually lessen their symptoms and lead a healthier/happier life.
Training classes, taught by Exercise Specialists (personal trainers), include an exercise program that attacks Parkinson’s at its vulnerable neurological points. While focusing on overall fitness, strength training, reaction time and balance, workouts include: ring work, focus mitts, heavy bags, speed bags, double-ended bags, jump rope, core work, calisthenics and circuit weight training. No boxing experience is necessary and people of all ages are invited to participate!
Jake Green, Exercise Specialist, and Andy French, Director of Graham Wellness Center, are both certified RSB coaches. Classes are now offered throughout the day at the Graham Wellness Center, 235 W. Walnut Street, Canton. Please call us for additional information…we are always happy to help! (309) 647-4087 ext. 2711 or ext. 2723.

“I’m very satisfied with the care and concern that I always receive when I go to Graham Hospital. Outstanding facility for outpatients.”

“When I received my
Wellness Profile (lab) results,
they pointed to a stroke level
– It scared me! After that, I had no reservations – I was ready to make a change.”
“You don’t know if you can improve if you
never try!!”
Bridging the Language Gap with New video Remote interpreting (vRi) Program Demonstrating a continued commitment to investing in high-quality care for its patients, Graham Hospital recently enhanced its language services program by implementing video remote interpreting (VRI). Through a new partnership with InDemand Interpreting, clinicians can now communicate more effectively with their limited English proficiency (LEP) and deaf patients and families.
The mobile VRI carts can be wheeled into a patient’s room to immediately connect clinicians and staff to a medically trained and certified interpreter 24 hours a day, in more than 200 languages, including American Sign Language. The innovative VRI technology ensures that every patient receives the highest quality health care regardless of language, cultural background or disability.
“The new video remote interpreting program has led to increased hospital efficiencies, improved communication and improved provider and patient satisfaction,” said Teresa McConkey, Chief Nursing Executive, Graham Hospital.
The matter or incident that motivates people to make changes is unique for each individual…sometimes it is money, sometimes it is simply the notion of wanting to make a difference. For Eric, both of these motivational factors are true. “Honestly, there were 2 reasons why I was interested in the health & fitness program offered to City employees thru the Graham Wellness Center: (1) The chance to get a cash incentive; (2) I had gained weight to the tune of 175 lbs., and I felt and looked miserable.”
In the beginning, it was a bit of a challenge reducing his caloric intake and steering clear of his biggest temptations – soda and ice cream - but he quickly found other substitutes, such as yogurt with granola, could help control his “sweet tooth.”
.
“Jake and Andy provided solid health advice, and I was able to move immediately in the right direction. I started competing with a fellow employee on the Wellness Portal for points, which is definitely a good motivation. I was also internally driven to lose weight and look and feel better. Finally, my wife, Beth, also supported my changes with healthy snacks, meals and moral support.”
Eric’s weight has dropped since starting the Wellness program, as well as a noticeable improvement to his body shape. Physically, he wakes up earlier to start his day, but feels far less tired than before. Eric has reduced his body fat composition by almost 5% since January. His BP has also improved. Overall, he works longer and harder, and feels better, MENTALLY and PHYSICALLY each day.
“I think having the help of Jake and Andy has been an integral part of my success. They were there to answer questions, give advice and support my goals.” For individuals who are considering changing their health behaviors, Eric suggested, “Don’t do it alone. Find a partner and team up with your doctor or wellness advisor.”
At one time, grabbing fast food out of ‘necessity’ because of a “busy lifestyle” had been a common excuse for John. After a whopping 30 lb. weight loss, John acknowledges that food preparation is the key to success for eating healthy. When he began eating better and exercising on a regular basis, his mood significantly improved, he noticed an increase in his energy level, and is considerably less fatigued. “The biggest help with making a change was Jake (Exercise Specialist), Andy (GWC Director), Dr. Phillips, and my wife,” shared John.
John found Jake to be very helpful and positive, “He was willing to sit and listen, and he was noticeably happy for me when he saw my follow-up lab results.” Routinely, John exercises 6-7 days/week. He also uses weights for toning. John emphasized, “Just get started, and pick a time that works for you. Make it a habit. Once you do this, you will feel guilty if you miss a workout.”
Dr. Kentwas drawn to general
surgery because of the people he is blessed to
treat and the diversity of procedures he is able to
offer his patients.

AeDs Purchased For Our CommunitySudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. According to the American Red Cross, over 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere, and at any age. CPR and early defibrillation with an AED more than doubles a victim’s chance of survival. Defibrillation within the first minute of sudden cardiac arrest can save the lives of up to 90%ofitsvictims.
Time is of the essence:

Federal law requires drivers of commercial motor vehicles (DMVs) to receive regular physical examinations. These exams are defined as the “Department of Transportation Medical Examinations.” DOT physicals are highly regulated for the drivers’ safety. They detect physical, mental, and emotional issues that can affect a driver’s ability to safely drive a commercial vehicle. DOT medical examin-ers are specially trained to understand the regulations and prevent drivers from being inappropriately disqualified.

This year is nearly half over and the excitement continues at Graham Health System’s Wound Clinic (Fulton & Mason Wound Clinic & Hyperbaric Medicine). In March, we had the honor of celebrating the inaugural year for wound care, the success for our patients and Dr. Ramayya Gowda’s first year as Medical Director. Dr. Gowda gave 110% during our first year of operations and turned over the torch to our new full-time wound physician, Dr. Andrew Roudebush. Dr. Roudebush, who joined the Wound Clinic in November 2015, was familiar to many as a provider in Family Medicine at the Graham Medical Group in Lewistown. Dr. Gowda continues to be a part of our Wound Clinic Team, and we feel extremely fortunate to have him. A special thanks, once again, to Dr. Gowda for our first year with your leadership!
Wound Care Awareness Week: Recognized June 6-10What a week! Did you know that 30% of untreated non-healing wounds will result in an amputation? This year was the 2nd year our Clinic has participated in a national campaign to raise awareness for wound care and help patients with chronic wounds find answers and healing. During the week we were able to visit the offices of over 50 local physicians and 30 community groups to help educate and promote our mission for wound healing. We may have missed a few along the way, so please reach out to us and we would be happy to visit your facility and any community organization. Did you know that the annual cost for treating wounds exceeds 50 Billion? Don’t wait any longer. Call to get an appointment with our Clinic today, no referral is needed and we can help you avoid future costs associated with a non-healing wound.
