Foreword

I am very glad to know that the Publication Division of Directorate of Economics &

Statistics (DES) has brought out District Statistical Hand Book-2018. This book contains key

statistical data on various socio-economic aspects of the District and will help as a reference

book for the Policy Planners, Administrators, Researchers and Academicians. The present issue

has been enriched with inclusions like various health programmes, activities of the SHGs,

programmes under ICDS and employment generated under MGNREGS in different blocks of

the District.

I would like to express my thanks to Dr. Bijaya Bhusan Nanda, Joint Director, DE&S,

Bhubaneswar for his valuable inputs and express my thanks to the officers and staff of

Publication Division of DES for their efforts in bringing out this publication.

Preface

The District Statistical Hand Book, Kalahandi’ 2018 is a step forward for evidence based

planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on

Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal

Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and

Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public

Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation

Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information

on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.

This publication will be a handy guide to the line Departments at the district and State

level for sectoral and decentralized planning. This will also carter to the district and block level

data requirement for Non-Government Organizations working in the field.

SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE: KALAHANDI

1. Location: Kalahandi district is one of the southern located districts in Odisha. It lies between

82o 32’ to 83o 47’ East longitude and between 19o 8’ to 20o 25’ North latitude. It is bounded

by the Bolangir district in north, Rayagada district in south, Kandhamal district in the east and

Nuapada district in the west.

2. Area and Population: The district has an area of 7920 sq.kms and 15.77 lakhs of population

as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 5.09 percent of the states territory and shares

3.76 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is 199 per sq.

kms as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 2253 villages (including 137 un-

inhabited villages) covering 13 blocks, 13 Tahasils and 2 Subdivisions. As per 2011 census

the schedule caste population is 286580 (18.17%) and schedule tribe population 449456

(28.50 %). The literacy percentage o the district covers 59.20 against 72.90 of the state.

3. Climate: The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during March

to August and cold during September to February. The monsoon generally breaks during the

month of June. Annual rainfall of the district was 1996.5 m.m in 2018 which is higher than the

normal rainfall (1330.5 m.m).

4. Agriculture: During the year 2017-18, the net area sown was 201 thousand hectares

against 3863 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 6502054 quintals,

26 quintals wheat, 18518 quintals maize, 6081 quintals ragi, 28371 quintals mung, 12955

quintals biri, 6951 quintals kulthi, 187 quintals till, 9370 quintals groundnuts and 1548

quintals mustard. During 2017-18 the total fertilizers used in Kalahandi district is about 33702

MT with a breakage of 20439 MT nitrogenous, 8764 MT phosphatic and 4499 MT pottasic

and the consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 62.63 Kg.

5. Irrigation: During the year 2017-18, it is reported by the Deputy Director, Agriculture,

Kalahandi that the irrigation potential created in various sources during Kharif and Rabi are

174873 hectares and 52686 hectares respectively.

6. Co-operation: The district has 77 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of

195009. The loan advances is to the tune of Rs. 18497.79 lakh and loan outstanding stood at

Rs. 19609.8 lakhs as of 2017-18. The agricultural credit Co-operative societies as more or less

evenly distributed across the 13 Blocks of the district. Besides that are 18 non-agricultural credit

Co-operative Societies and 2 Marketing Co-operative Societies in the district.

7. Forest: District of Kalahandi has abundant of Forest area that contributed 32.05% of the total

geographical area of the district.

8. Veterinary Services: During 2017-18, Milk production is 55.22 thousand MT, production of

eggs is 458.229 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 3.029 thousand MT in this district.

During the year 2017-18, 21 nos. of Hospitals and dispensaries, 138 nos. of livestock Aid

centers, 116 nos. of Artificial insemination centers and 19 nos. V.A.S and Additional V.A.S

were functioning in Kalahandi district of provide veterinary services to the people.

9. Industry and Mining: During the year 2017-18, 1831 nos. of Micro small and Medium

Enterprises have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 10982.25 lakhs with

9152 nos. of Employment generated in Kalahandi district. Besides various kinds of handicraft

works like wood craft & terakata have been developed by the skilled workers and artisans of

the district.

10. Power: There are 2047 nos. villages so far electrified as on 2017-18 which constitutes 96.7

% to the total villages of the district.

11. Transport & Communication: During 2017-18, 206 kms of National Highways, 304 kms of

state highways, 212 Kms. of Major district roads, 616 kms of other district roads, 5590 Kms,

of Inter village roads,2958 Kms. of Intra village roads, 1254 Kms of Village roads and 311

kms of forest roads are operating in the district. Besides, 92.73 kms of Railway lines with 10

nos. of railway stations and passenger halts are continuing in the district.

12. Education: There were 1639 nos. of primary schools, 792 nos. of Up-Primary schools, 413

nos. of Secondary Schools and 70 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2017-18.

Besides there is 1 no. of Engineering College and 1 no. of Diploma Engineering in the

district during year 2017-18 to impart technical education. The teacher pupil ratio in the

primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 314.97, 488.79 and 518.86 respectively.

13. Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private

individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 1 no. of DHH, 43 nos. of

PHC, 17 CHC, 248 nos. of Sub-Centre with 572 beds facilities, 17 nos. of Homoeopathic

dispensaries and 20 nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2017-18.

14. Banking: As on December 2018, there were 143 nos. of all banks having 3652.01 crores

rupees deposit and 2169.68 crores rupees credit in the district. The district has banking

branches network of 143 out of which 4 (2.80%) were in the urban area, 51 (35.66%) in semi-

urban area and 88 (61.54 %) in rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at

139.

15. Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2017-18

was Rs. 2971.12 lakh. The total collection of Tax in the district during 2017-18 was Rs.

2164.51 Lakh.

16. Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 2.88Lakh

and total no. of person days generated was 31.72 lakh during the year 2017-18.

17. Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district in graded as slight zone for wind

& cyclone, high risk zone for flood, very high risk zone for drought, moderate risk zone for

earthquake & high risk zone for accident.
