  • Lead singer of Skippinish, Norrie MacIver and the Govan Reminiscence Group get back together for new songs to weave around the pillars of Govan Old. The mysterious medieval stones inspire leading Scottish composer, Alasdair Nicolson to write a haunting trumpet concerto for local virtuoso, Tom Poulson. Mendelssohn’s string symphonies take us on a remarkable creative journey in miniature, written between the tender ages of 12 and 14.

Welcome to the second year of The Glasgow Barons. As Govan transforms itself, I explore the wonderful talents and spaces on our doorstep: the Scottish hip hop community around Sunny Govan FM, the beautifully renovated Govan and Linthouse Parish Church and a warm welcome at the Fairfield Working Men’s Club.

As Govan Old greets summer, we get back together with our local custodians, the Govan Reminiscence Group, to celebrate Govan’s characters in song. Following the Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s wonderful Mendelssohn series, we explore his string symphonies, a creative journey in miniature, written between the ages of 12 and 14.

Completing the campus of Central Govan is the Pearce Institute’s majestic McLeod Hall. The rarely performed Sibelius Humoresques and Vaughan Williams Concerto Grosso positively glow in this acoustic, whilst Musgrave, Williams and McGuire celebrate the night, the sea and the local junkshop.

Throughout 2019, watch out for Musicians in Exile out and about via Facebook, our group of asylum seeking and refugee musicians playing their homelands’ music. Also keep an eye out for the flash mobbing Govan Men’s Samba Band, once seen never forgotten.

All within a minute of Govan subway and bus station, G51 is certainly the place to be.Paul MacAlindinArtistic Directorwww.glasgowbarons.comScottish Charity SC047454 Company SC564970
