Govan – an overview
Ancient Govan
Govan Old
World Class Shipbuilding
Govan 1900 to 1950
Issues• Declining & vulnerable population
• Large areas of derelict vacant land
• Void housing and underused buildings
• Disjointed feel, lack of cohesion
• Derelict shops, failing shopping centre
• Tired community facilities, disrepair of once magnificent buildings and a lack of recreational and leisure facilities
• Poor quality public realm, landscaping and green spaces
CGAP Aims
• Reverse the physical detractors: derelict land, vacant shops, void housing and underused buildings; run down public space; lack of cohesion and connection.
• Build on Govan’s strengths: history, listed buildings, central riverside location, excellent transport links, resilient community.
• Take advantage of opportunities created by adjacent growth areas: emerging Innovation District - media quarter at Pacific Quay, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and Glasgow University Campus
redevelopment; Glasgow Harbour; Riverside Museum; SEC & Hydro.
