When I was about 17 years old, after making my second stained glass window at my father’s kitchen table, I made a life decision: I promised myself that one day I would edify the spirit of humanity by bringing beauty and meaning into the world through art. I am happy to report that almost 40 years later, I am honoring that promise by creating art every day for every conceivable kind of building, home and landscape.

From the beginning of my career, I’ve been fascinated by the interplay between light and glass as I explored the artistic possibilities of refraction and reflection in glass fabrications. As I developed as an artist, I began exploring other media, moving between highly refined, polished materials like polished aluminum and dichroic glass to gritty, repurposed and salvaged materials like rusted steel and weathered wood. I’ve learned to let

the story I am telling lead me towards the right material. Salvaged and repurposed materials allow me to explore the effect of time and nature on man-made materials or, as in the case for the Napa 9/11 Memorial, convey the devastating aftermath of inhumanity. Using a variety of glass techniques and applications for university campuses and houses of worship captures the experience of inspiration and illumination often found there.

My work investigates intellectual precepts and explores emotional complexities. It is about shaping a story and expressing an idea, not just creating an object of beauty. When developing a concept for a new public artwork, I endeavor to connect to the site by researching its history and culture; connect to the viewer by listening to the community and understanding their vision for the project; and finally, connect to the landscape and architecture surrounding the work by choosing materials that respond and engage with the location. For a private commission, I establish a relationship with the client in order to fully engage with their needs and goals for the project and create work that meets, if not surpasses, their expectations.

I am passionate about the process of creating art and humbled by the privilege of making it everyday. In a time when the speed and ease of technology robs us of daily personal interactions, art has the power to remind us of the importance of the human touch. My spirit is in everything I make and I am honored to share it with you.

Civic centers present opportunities for Huether to create work that expresses the culture, character and history of a municipality. Cities throughout the world increasingly recognize the value of art in public places and look to artists to strengthen community identity and encourage civic pride. Huether creates iconic gateways, way finders and sculptural elements that enhance the public’s engagement and add vitality and beauty to urban settings.

In a unique public-private collaboration, the citizens of

Napa planned the 9/11 Memorial garden to honor the

memories of those killed on 9/11 and the first responders

who risked their own lives in their efforts to save them.

Huether was commissioned to create the Memorial working

with 30 tons of steel received by the community from the

wreckage of the Twin Towers. The garden and Huether’s

installation have become a place for the community to

engage in quiet contemplation and reflection and express

the courage, caring and compassion the world experienced

in the aftermath of this terrible terrorist act.

The Bridge North Texas Homeless Assistance Center

serves more than 6,000 clients throughout the Dallas

Metropolitan area. For the center, Huether created

art glass windows using various glass techniques,

including mouth-blown and etched glass. He forged

a real connection with the Center’s homeless clients;

they contributed personal essays for the project,

portions of which Huether etched into the glass

by-hand. This project received two 2009 American

Institute of Architects Housing Awards and a USGBC

LEED™ Silver Rating.

Arburg, a leading manufacturer of injection molding

machines for plastics, commissioned Huether to create this

oversized globe for the exterior of its new customer center.

The spherical form symbolizes Arburg’s global reach and

the dichroic glass panels and acrylic rods reference the

company’s product. The sculpture is a vibrant complement

to the building’s stacked rectangles and has become an

iconic and unifying symbol for the entire community.

Boston Properties developed 535 Mission, a 27-story addition to the San Francisco skyline, and commissioned Huether to create artwork for the lobby space. The multi-pieced work starts on the building’s exterior façade on Mission Street, continues through the lobby and comes to an end on the Minna Street façade, breaching the traditional boundary between outdoor and in.

Huether’s large-scale wall installation brims with vibrant color, texture and pattern that is refracted, transmitted and reflected, resulting in a wall of light that brings life and excitement to 535 Mission’s public space.

Rostrum, an amphitheater-like installation made of

stainless steel and native cedar timbers, takes its aesthetic

cue from the landscape and architectural design of the

site. Huether blurs the line between art, sculpture and

nature by creating beautiful art that also functions as an

outbuilding. Residents engage with Rostrum by using the

space as a gathering place, as well as interacting with it

as art. Huether embedded fifty LED lights into the curved

stainless steel pipes to create a beautiful glow at night.

Huether’s striking glass-paneled mural memorializes Lady

Bird Johnson’s tireless support of President Johnson,

civil rights, social justice and the Highway Beautification

Act. Huether worked with Lady Bird’s daughters, project

architects and Presidential Library staff to select imagery

that reflects Lady Bird’s dynamic personality and life

experiences. Back lit with fiber optic illumination, the mural

acts as a wall of light for the corridor space. A border of

Lady Bird’s beloved Texas wildflowers, fabricated in fused

glass adds a bold flourish to this beautiful installation.

Huether bel ieves that art integrated into a healthcare setting enhances patients’ well being, reduces stress and serves as a welcome respi te f rom often difficult circumstances. By integrating his work into hospital chapels, meditation spaces, gardens, and lobby and reception areas, Huether creates work that adds beauty and pal l iat ive e lements to the healthcare environment.

Drawing inspiration from environmentalist John Muir’s reverence for the San Francisco Bay Area’s natural beauty, Huether incorporates references to the Bay Area’s mountains and waterways and integrates natural landscape and architectural elements into the overall design. Mountain Range, fabricated with two layers of acid-etched glass and one layer of Corten steel, adds rhythm and dimension to the plaza space and is illuminated by LEDs for an ambient glow at night. The 200-foot, dichroic glass River of Light embedded in the plaza serves as a way-finder, leading visitors from the parking lot to the building’s entrance. This two-part installation serves as an iconic, place-making sculpture work for the John Muir Medical Center.

Residential commissions provide an opportunity for Huether to create work on a more intimate scale. Often the result of an intense collaboration with the client, Huether’s artwork for a private residence is his direct response to the aesthetics of the home, the location and collaboration with the homeowner’s vision. Three-dimensional sculptures, doors, art glass wall applications and suspended installations are just some of the approaches Huether has integrated into his client’s residences.

Huether was inspired by the motion of sand and water

for the art glass additions to a client’s home in Carmel by

the Sea. Huether etched delicate sand patterns on a glass

garden wall in the home’s landscaped exterior space that

is illuminated by programmed LEDs at night. Cascading

water and sea foam inspired the glass screen separating

the home’s foyer from the dining area. Dichroic glass was

inserted between two slabs of etched glass, creating a

shifting display of color that is transformed as light, and

the viewer’s angle, changes throughout the day.

Huether’s art work in houses of worship and community-gathering spaces gives artistic expression to the liturgical and spiritual. Often working in close collaboration with the congregation, Huether’s work breathes new life into sanctuaries, strengthening the experience of worshipers and reaffirming the enduring appeal of religious art and cultural symbols throughout the world.

Huether approaches the integration of art in transportation systems as an opportunity to engage travelers and revitalize their experience of the transit space. Local and regional identity is often at the heart of Huether’s concepts in transportation hubs and his work conveys the cultural vitality and character of the region. For travelers undertaking a daily commute or a significant voyage, Huether’s artwork injects a sense of surprise and discovery in an often sterile and impersonal space.

To create this installation of seven life-sized figures for the baggage claim area of the new terminal at the Raleigh-

Durham International Airport, Huether scanned models with a three-dimensional digital scanner then employed a

CNC machine to carve the figures out of high-density foam. The installation ingeniously integrates technology with

the creative process and is designed to introduce surprise and whimsy into the space. The neutral color of the figures

blends gracefully with the light and airy building aesthetic.

Each figure has a personal connection to Huether. Family, friends and co-workers, along with a self-portrait, are

included and represent the wide-array of travelers who will experience the terminal on a daily basis. Each of the

“travelers” carries their own baggage, adding further distinction to each character and relating to the experience

of the real travelers in the baggage claim area below. The installation provokes a strong response from travelers,

whether by identifying with the figure balancing precariously while holding suitcases on the tightrope or the “tourist”

photographing the scenery from her perch on an overhead beam.

For The Canyon, Huether evoked the profile of nearby

Wasatch and Oquirrh Mountain ranges, and then visually

segmented the mountain scape by placing vertical steel

plates at specific distances apart along the station’s platform.

The sculpture is powder-coated to resemble the intense burnt

orange colors of the sun setting in Bryce Canyon. The steel

plates, much like rows of grapevines or trees in an orchard,

appear to “open and close” as passengers speed by from the

seat of a commuter train or car. What is clearly stationary

appears to be in motion for observers of this passively kinetic

installation.

Huether created Over Houston by photographing the

city and its environs from the window of a small chartered

plane. He then abstracted and integrated vibrant colors into

the images for use in this luminous installation. Huether

used special art glass techniques, including etching, fusing

and laminating to fabricate the 48 individual panels. Over

Houston tells a story of air travel and illuminates the

unique, natural and urban landscape as seen from above.

art

Huether explores different media in his smaller-scale fine art work by investigating the seductive properties of richly saturated color, natural and artificial light sources, lush textures, and using quirky repurposed vintage imagery. Huether’s work is deeply personal and intensely eclectic. It is widely collected, favored by interior designers and exhibited at museums and galleries in major cities throughout the United States.

about the artist

Gordon Huether, the child of German immigrants,

was born in Rochester, New York in 1959 and

raised in Napa, California where he still resides

and is an active member of the community. With

dual citizenship in Germany and the United States,

Huether has moved between the two countries

throughout his life. He learned art composition

and appreciation at an early age from his father,

an artist and craftsman who designed window

displays for a department store in the small town

of Napa. International experiences and the verdant

countryside of the Napa Valley region strongly

influenced Huether’s initial artistic exploration and he resolved at an early age to create a lasting impact

on the world through the creation of large-scale public art.

In 1987, Huether opened his studio in Napa, California and in 1989 he received his first public art

commission from the University of Alaska Geophysical Institute. For the first time, Huether collaborated

with architectural, design and construction teams to realize his vision, a significant step forward in his

career. In his nearly 30-year career, Huether has created more than 70 public art installations for city

centers, transportation hubs, and corporate and university campuses throughout the world. He has

completed several hundred private commissions, in addition to creating fine art work.
