MICHAEL JAFFEE, guitarist and lutenist, has been ac-tive in New York City as both a performer and teacher.He is founder and director of the Waverly Consort, anensemble of six musicians specializing in the perform-ance of music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance andBaroque. In 1964, Mr. Jaffee received a degree of Mas-ter of Arts in musicology from New York University.The article published in this issue is a condensed ver-sion of his master's thesis, which was written underthe advisorship of Gustave Reese. Mr. Jaffee is on thefaculties of the Henry Street and Third Street Settle-ment music schools.
