FACT 1: As each goose flaps its wings it creates an uplift for
the birds that follow. By flying in a "V" formation the whole
flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew
alone.
LESSON 1: People who share a common direction and sense
of community can get where they are going quicker and easier
because they are travelling on the thrust of one another.

FACT 2: When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly
feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It movesquickly back into formation to take advantage of the lifting
power of the bird immediately in front of it.
LESSON 2: If we have as much sense as a goose we stay
in formation with those headed where we want to go. We
are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

FACT 3: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into
formation and another goose flies to the point opposite.
LESSON 3: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks
and sharing leadership. As with geese, people areinterdependent on each other's skills, capabilities, and
unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources.

FACT 4: The geese flying in formation honk to encouragethose up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON 4: We need to make sure our honking is
encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement theproduction is much greater. The power of encouragement (to
stand by one's heart or core values, and encourage the heart
and core of others) is the quality of honking we seek.

FACT 5: When a goose gets sick, wounded or shot down, twogeese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and protect
it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then, they
launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.
LESSON 5: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by
each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

GooseSenseShare a Sense of direction
Where are we going?Best way to determine that: Make a Road Map that
marks your destination and the path to get there. Include
mileage indicators so you know how youre progressing.
Start by asking:Whose expectations should we be meeting?
(whose interests are included in the trip? These are
the stakeholders)
What indicators do they expect us to have to
demonstrate were moving to our destination?
What measurements will indicate that were
getting closer to, and finally reaching, our
destination?

Identify Essential Outcomes (KPIs)
The Path to Discover Where were going:
Assess External Environment
Assess Internal EnvironmentAnalyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats (SWOTs) as they relate to the
essential outcomes
Identify and assess ideas that will work to achieve
essential outcomes
Synthesize the ideas into strategies and goals Evaluate and reformulate
the mission statement
Develop milestones and yearly objectivesEvaluate quarterly

GooseSenseEssential Outcomes
(Key Performance Indicators, KPIs)Essential outcomes (KPIs) have only one definition throughout the
organization (so, theyre easy to understand and everyone understands them
the same way!)
The essential outcomes represent the measures that your stakeholders and
managers use to determine whether you are successful.
There are two types. The first has to do with the measurement of a specific
outcome of an essential activity of the organization over whichthe
institution has control; essential activities are those that have direct
bearing on the perceived well -being and success of the institution, thosethat are most essential to its survival and success. The second is more
abstract and has to do with the measurement of conditions that affect the
health and well being of an institution, a condition over which the
organization has little or no control (like budget allocation from the
legislature) or a considerable amount of control (like striving to be
considered one of the top ten programs in the country)

GooseSenseEssential Outcomes
(Key Performance Indicators, KPIs)Measurement: Are the measures currently available or must they be
collected
Value: If the measure is currently available, what is the current value?
(dont focus on what it should be, that happens later in the process0
Level: Essential Outcomes must be prioritized. Some are not primary, they
are secondary and contribute to a primary outcome. Its best for an
organization finding its new way to focus on 10-15 outcomes (but no more
than 20!).
Definition: Define each Essential Outcome precisely. Dont worry aboutassigning current value until its well defined.
Operationalize: When will new numbers be available, who will collect
them, and who will be responsible for the calculations, reports, and
distribution of reports?
