Recently,IwroteaboutchangeswevebeentrackinginhowGoogletreatsExactMatchDomains(EMDs).Yesterday(Friday,9/28),MaCustweetedthefollowingmessage:

Itwasiniallyunclearwhatupcomingmeantandwhetherthechangewasinprogressorwouldrolloutlaterintheweekend.Mawentontosaythatthechangeaects0.6%ofEnglishUSqueriestoanoceabledegree,butdidntpindownthemeline.Thismorning,ournewMozCast"TopView"metricsshowedthefollowing:

Wemeasureda24hourdropinEMDinfluencefrom3.58%to3.21%.Thisrepresentsadayoverdaychangeof10.3%.Whilethegraphonlyshowsthe30dayview,thisalsomarksthelowestmeasurementofEMDinfluenceonrecordsincewestartedcollecngdatainearlyApril.

So,WhoGotHit?Acrossourdatasetof1000SERPs,41EMDsfelloutoftheTop10(5newEMDsentered,sothenetchangewas36domains).Pleasenotethatwecantprovethatadomainlostrankingduetothealgorithmchangewecanonlymeasurewhatfellout.Hereare5examplesofdomainsthatlostrankingasofthismorning(9/29)allhadpreviouslyrankedforatleastthepast7days:

WhatAboutThe#1s?Youmayhavenocedthatnoneofmyexampledomainswerepreviouslyrankedinthe#1spot.Acrossthe41EMDsthatdroppedoutofthetop10inourdata,noneofthemranked#1thepreviousday.Threedomainsheldthe#2spotpriortotheirfall,includingwww.mariogamesonline.net,whichisnolongerinthetop100.Itsinteresngtonotethat,ofthe41EMDsaected,5ofthemhadgamesintheirdomainname,butthiscouldjustbeafluke(orasignofanindustrywithtoomanylowvaluesites).

WhatsThePaern?Itsnotmygoaltocallthesesitesoutsomemayhavedroppedinrankingduetofactorsthathadnothingtodowiththisalgorithmupdate(andwereonlycoincidentallyEMDs).Forexample,www.charterschools.orgappearstobealegimatesiterepresenngaprofessionalorganizaon:theMichiganAssociaonofPublicSchoolAcademies(MAPSA).Atfirstglance,itappearsthattheironlycrimemaybechoosingakeywordfocuseddomainovertheirownbrand.Thesitedoesntreallytargetthephrasecharterschoolsparcularlystronglyandisedtoonestate.Itsnotabadsite,butonecanarguewhetheritdeservestorankinthetop10foracompevekeywordsimplybecauseofitsdomainname.

Othersitesinthemixdoappeartoexhibitmoretradionallowqualitysignalsaggressivekeywordusage,lowauthority,spammylinkbuilding,etc.andseemtohavebeenrankingsolelybyvirtueoftheirEMDs.Theresnooneclearsignalinplay,thoughatthispoint,wehavetoassumethatGoogleisweighingmulplefactors.Again,itisinteresngtonotethatnoEMDspreviouslyat#1wereaected,butourdatasetissllrelavelysmall.

Theones(ormostofthem)thatusedtotakealotofadvantagesfromtheuseofEMDgotdevaluatedbutnotpenalized.IfyoustartanewEMDdomainrightnowyouwillbeonthesamelinewitheveryothernewdomain(ifallotherthingsareequal)noadvantagefromtheuseofEMD.Thisdosen'tmeananyoneshouldstayawayfromusingEMDitcouldbesllokforCTRandsoonitjustthatitwon'tmaer(atleastnotthatmuch)asarankingsignal.Justmyopinion.

CoulditperhapsbethatanyrankingbenefitgainedbytheEMDmightbelessoned,orlostaltogether?Ifsothiswouldexplainwhysomedropswereonlysmall(EMDvaluedropped,butotherrankingfactorssllinplace),andothersmuchmoresubstanal(EMDwastheonly"good"factor).Iknowwithsuchasmalldatasetmakinganyjudgementsisgoingtobetough,andavoidingthetendenciesofdrawinglinkswheretherearenoneiseasiersaidthandone,buthaveyounocedanymorecorrelaonswiththeSERPmovements?Youdon'thavetonamenames,I'mjustcurious.

With41EMDsinaectedinthedataset,it'shardtodrawanystrongconclusionsbeyondtheoveralldrop.You'reabsolutelycorrectthiscouldbeapenaltyforsitesusingEMDsbadly,oritcouldsimplybeadevaluaonbasedonGoogleloweringthe"volume"ofEMDsasarankingsignal.Isuspectit'smorealongthelinesoftheformeratargetedhitforsiteswithotherpoorsignals,butIcan'tprovethatatthispoint.

I'veseenalotofsituaonswhereanewsitegotabitofagraceperiod,butthenrankingsdroppedaeramonthorso.Usually,itjustmeansthatGooglegavethesitethebenefitofadoubtatfirstandmayhavecountedthingsliketheEMDmorestrongly,butthenreevaluatedbasedontheauthority(linkprofile),etc.Oddsare,yourlinks,content,andsocialprofilesaresllcounnginyourfavoryou'vejustgottoshowthemposivemomentum.

TenuousasitistodrawanyrealconclusionfromtheSERPs,I'mgoingtospendtherestoftheweekendbelievingthisisanacknowledgementthatthecontentIdevelopedisactuallynottoobad.

IhaveoneEMDsitewhichhasgoodcontentandnaturalbacklinks.Itisnotevenathinsite.Ithasapproximately30,000wordscontentandisgrowing.IthassurvivedfromthepreviousPandaandPenguinupdates.However,thesitewashitbadlyduringthisGoogleEMDalgoupdate.
