Getting Started with Google SketchUp 8
Click on the Start button (lower left corner),
Programs, Google SketchUp 8, Google SketchUp.
You are going to create this drawing of
A1 Equipment Building. You could
store an ATV, Quad, lawnmower, or asnow blower in here. Note the
dimensions of the outside walls.

When you first open Google SketchUp 8
select Choose Template (If this has beenshut off and does not pop up, you can
click on Window, Preferences,
Template, Simple Template - Feet and
Inches - once SketchUp has opened).
Click on the Simple Template – Feet and Inches
and then the Start Using SketchUp button.

To turn on isometric (3D) view, on
the pull down menus, click on
Camera, Standard Views, Iso. Thescreen may not appear to change if it
was already on. I am going to leave
Susan (girl’s name) in the picture as
a reference point.
To draw a rectangle, click on Draw, Rectangle and click once on the very
left corner (circled) and then the pointer to the far right corner (circled), but
do not click a second time. In the bottom right corner, type in 12’,14’ andthen the Enter key. You could also click on the speed button on the Getting
Started Toolbar (circled) to create a rectangle. If you make a mistake youcan click on Edit, Undo to go back as many steps as you wish. Refer to
Dimensions on page 1. It is 12’ x 14’ . You can only get approximate
numbers with pointing and clicking. To get exact numbers it is faster to
type them in. If you need to change from metric to imperial units, click on,
Window Model Information Units.

To pull up, or extrude, your rectangle
into a 3D box, click on Tools, Push/Pull
or click on the Getting Started Toolbar
Push/Pull Tool speed button (circled).Click once inside of the Rectangle and
pull up with the mouse.
When you have extruded the box
this much, click once more on the
inside of the Rectangle to turn off the Push/Pull tool. Notice the
bottom right corner has theDistance (Height) of 8’0” (8 feet
and 0 inches).

To draw a diagonal line to create a roof slope, click on Tools, Tape Measure, click on the top left
corner, move the cursor down the wall, type 2’,
Enter. Now Draw, Line (or click on the Line Tool
circled). Point the Line Tool at the Midpoint of thetop middle until it says Midpoint in a popup box,
click once to turn the Line Tool on. Move the
pointer to the side edge and then click once to drawthe line. Notice the Length of the line in the bottom
right corner is approximately 6’4”.
To draw another line from the top Midpoint, click
once at the top midpoint, move your pointer to the
right edge until it says Edge (in a popup box) and yousee a dotted red line going across to the far side of the
front face. Notice the length of this line is also 4’8”.

Click on the Push/Pull Tool and click on the front face of the triangle on the roof.
Push the cursor to the back of the roof and
click off when it says (back) face. You willhave pushed this side of the roof “off” so
that you end up with a sloping roof.
Your roof should now loo
like this.

With the Push/Pull Tool still on, click on the front
triangle face, push your cursor back, click at the
back face to remove this side of the roof.
Your roof will now look
like this.

Use the Tape Measure to measure 2’ in from each
bottom corner and mark it. Now use the Rectangle Tool to draw a door in the end. See if you can get the
dimensions close to those shown in the bottom right
corner (8’0”wide, 6’0”high). Close will be good enoughfor this drawing. Camera, Zoom will get you closer in
for greater accuracy.
Use the Draw, Arc Tool to draw this arc. 1. Click on the top left of therectangle, 2. Click on the top right of the triangle and then 3. Move your pointer
(cursor) to the top center where you wish the top center of the arc to be. When it
is in the center you will see a blue line to the top center of the arc, Enter key.
4. Type 1’ for the height of the Arc. 5. Click to complete the drawing of the arc.

Click on Tools, Eraser (or the Eraser circled on the
Toolbar) to activate it. To erase the line separating the
rectangle and the arc, click on the horizontal line.
The line has been erased.

Use the Push/Pull Tool to push the doorway back
about 8” (see bottom right corner of screen for 8inches .
Activate the Eraser Tool and then click on the
front face of the doorway to erase it. You may
have to click on the line on the bottom of the
doorway to erase it.

To add texture to the side,
click on Window, Materials,
Wood, and select the sideway
wood circled.
Add more Wood Texture to the front face
and the inner arch. You can click the X in the
upper right corner of the Materials menu to getrid of it.

To get roofing shingles, click on
Windows, Materials, Roofing andselect these shingles (circled). Click on
the roof with the little Paint Bucket
Tool.
To darken the shingles, click on
the Edit tab, and then Click and
Drag the slide down. Click on th
X to exit from the Materials menu

Notice the darker color giving anicer contrast with the wood
sides.
To turn the building around, click on Camera, Orbit (or the
Orbit speed button circled) and Click and Drag the buildingaround so we can see the other side.

Add the Wood Texture and
Shingles as shown. You will have to
darken the Shingles again.
To turn the building around to see the far end, click
on Camera, Orbit and Click and Drag. You can
also use the Pan Tool (white hand circled) to help
position the building in the center of the screen. Youcan also use the Roller Ball on top of your mouse to
make it smaller (or larger), if you have one. You
could also use Camera menu, Zoom, Extents.
