Google Scholar
November 2016
Set Your Google Scholar Settings at Home or Work Google Scholar is a free Web site that finds citations to scholarly articles, papers, and books using
Google technology. It has links to UConn's electronic subscriptions of full text of articles, and it
identifies nearby libraries containing books. Choosing UConnFullText will redirect you to our UConn
Network therefore, you may need to use your NetID and password to access the article.
Google Scholar can be convenient for a quick search, allows you to do limited cross-database
searching, and can point you to materials you might not have found otherwise, but it does NOT
replace library databases.
If off-campus you must adjust your Google Scholar settings in order to see the search results that
are from the UConn databases. This action is not necessary if you are using a campus computer or if
you are connected to UConn’s network. Note: Try “Access Skybox Online” at http://skybox.uconn.edu
To change your Google Scholar settings:
• Click on the Settings option at the top-right corner.
• Select the Library Links option on the left sidebar.
• Enter “UConn” in the search bar; check the box next to “UConn – UconnFullText.”
• You must SAVE your settings.
UConnFullText are only accessible for our UConn students or at a campus computer. For our
public users we have the ResearchIT CT database (http://researchitct.org).
Furthermore, you can also import your citation from Google Scholar to RefWorks.
To import your citation list to RefWorks:
• Click on the Settings option at the top-right corner.
• Under the bibliography manager section, select the “show links to import citations into…”
option and select RefWorks in the dropdown menu.
When searching for your topic, you also have the option to create an alert. This allows Google
Scholar to email you with an alert whenever there is a recent development in your research topic.
To create an email alert: • Select the envelope icon on the left sidebar.
• Enter your email & number of results you wish to receive with each email.
• Create the alert.
Reminders:
• Google Scholar excludes many resources (e.g., many full text articles, plus citations to thousands of additional
articles, books, essays, etc.) and does not indicate what is included (e.g., dates covered, publishers, etc.).
Preliminary tests in the library show that Google Scholar is NOT retrieving a good amount of material.
• Google Scholar is just one starting point.
• Google Scholar does NOT replace the library catalog or specialized bibliographic databases. You will miss too
much otherwise.
• Use the library’s Interlibrary Services (MyILLiad) to request articles not available thru the UConn databases.
• Again, Remember to Save your settings if you are using Google Scholar off-campus.
