A Brief History of Google Translate

Google began offering language translation services right around the turn of the millennium—just a few years after the company was incorporated in 1998. The earliest version of the service had very limited capabilities such that it was only able to translate English to and from three other languages—French, German, and Spanish. More languages (Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Russian) were eventually added in the years that followed.

On April 28, 2006, Google improved the service by launching an online version of its statistical machine translation system and adding to it Arabic translation (to and from English) capabilities.

On May 23, 2007, Google added a new feature on Google Translate which enabled users to search for something in their own language and search the web in another language.

In acknowledging the shortcomings of the new feature and those of machine translation in general, Google said:

“it's usually good enough for you to obtain the gist of information in a language you might otherwise be unable to access. We think this feature will be particularly useful for our international users since although the majority of Internet users out there are non English speakers, a majority of the content on the internet is still in English.”

In May 2008, Google's language translation service was made capable of translating between any two languages, only going through English when needed. Additionally, more languages were added including Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Finnish, Hindi, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian and Swedish, bringing the total number of translatable languages to 23.

By February 2009, the number of languages nearly doubled. By this time, Google was already translating 41 languages or about 98% of the languages read by Internet users.

On December 3, 2009, Google announced that it was going to add a new tool to its Search Options panel, a feature which it had just recently added to Google Search.

In a blog post dated December 3, 2009, Google said:

“Today, we’re excited to introduce a new "Translated search" tool in the Search Options panel that makes finding and reading content written in other languages easier. Translated search is great because it helps you find information from sites written in other languages. We've offered this feature in Google Translate for a while, but now we're integrating it fully into Google search, making it easier for you to find and read results from pages across the web, even if they weren't written in a language you speak.”

And, once again, it acknowledged that the feature isn't perfect, saying:

“Of course, the algorithm that determines which languages to translate your search query into isn't perfect, but we’re working to improve it.”

How to Use Google's Translated Search

Go to http://www.google.com

Enter your query and click on the Google Search button.

On the search result page, click on the Show Options link located near the top of the page, underneath the search field.

At the very bottom of the search options panel you will see a link that says Translated search. Click on it.

A box will appear on top of the search results showing the other languages that your query can be found in and the number of results available in each language. By default, only four languages are shown.

To see more languages, click on the Add language link below the list of languages and click on the language you want to add.

The language you clicked on will now be added to the list.

To remove a language from the list, click on the boxed “x” icon beside the language.

You can also select the language in which the search results will be displayed. To do this, simply click on the language link (English in the screenshot below) beside where it says My language...

The screenshot below shows the search results when Spanish is clicked on.

To see the translated results of your query, click on the number of results that corresponds to your language of choice.

The screenshot below shows the translated results for Spanish. You will notice that the total number of results shown reflects that of the Spanish results seen in the box in the screenshot above. You will also notice that the search results are automatically translated to your language of choice (in this case, English).

Below is a screenshot of the French translated results.

You may have noticed that there's a link in the translated results box that says Automatically select languages to search. That link appears only if you have modified the contents of the box.

Clicking on that link will display the languages that has the highest number of results, as the screenshot below shows.

The OTHER Translated Search

Google has another version of Translated Search which resides outside of the Search Options. It can be found on http://translate.google.com/translate_s?hl=en

It basically works the same as the one in the Search Options panel. It just looks different.

Using it is pretty straightforward. Enter your query in search field...

Select the language of the pages you want to search...

Page 12: Google International Secrets

And select YOUR language.

Then, click on the Translate and Search button.

The screenshot below shows the search results page which displays both the original and translated versions of the search results side-by-side.

If you find that the translated search term is incorrect, you can edit it by clicking on the Not quite right? Edit link.

You'll then be enabled to edit the translated search term.
