Learn34.com (Google Apps for Education in SD34)

Recently, SD34 has piloted Google Apps for Education (GAFE) under the banner of

Learn34.com.

  

Essentially, Learn34.com is a cloud based learning platform allowing teachers and students to

create a range of documents online (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings), website space, email,

shared calendars and 1 Terabyte of file storage accessible at home and school on any device.

Learn34.com allows us to collaborate and learn more effectively through the use of technology,

and offer a range of new learning opportunities for teachers and students.

Facts about Google Apps for Education (Learn34.com)

● GAFE is used by many of the world’s leading educational institutions, including

universities, secondary, middle and elementary schools. Many public and independent

schools in Canada are using GAFE right now.

● GAFE is completely free for schools and does not contain advertising anywhere within it.

● Many GAFE apps, such as Google Docs and Gmail, are familiar to many students and

parents.

How will Google Apps for Education enhance my child’s learning opportunities?

● GAFE allows teachers and students the ability to collaborate on documents

simultaneously. This type of collaboration has been impossible in the past.

● GAFE works on many different devices including laptops, tablets, and even

smartphones. This allows our students to continue learning beyond the classroom and

provides them the ability to access their learning at any time or place.

● Students and teachers can work in teams, share calendars, documents, slide

presentations, etc. and collaborate to learn more effectively.

Things to consider:

● Learn34.com allows students to communicate and store information in both public and

private spaces online.

● Unlike many other web services, Learn34.com acknowledges it’s users as the owners of

content they produce and store.

● Learn34.com does not share any data or user information with any other party unlike

other Google products such as Gmail.

● Your child will be provided an email address as part of the Learn34.com package.

● Permission forms, available at

http://learn34.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Consent-Learn34.pdf need to be sent

home for parent to sign and returned to the classroom teacher. These permission forms

are to be retained by the classroom teacher prior to student use of Learn34.com.

We will be working with students and teachers to educate them in the use of Learn34.com in a

productive (digital literacy) and responsible (digital citizenship) manner. We also feel it

necessary for parents to be aware of new technologies such as Learn34.com and encourage you

to be proactive in discussing and exploring these with your students.
