What is Google Analytics? Google Analytics is a valuable analytics tool offered by Google that enables web site owners to track unique visitors to a website, distinguishing between new and repeat visitors, how those visitors got to the website (called traffic sources) and what they did after they got there. To use Google Analytics you will need to sign up for a Google account, and to setup Google Analytics on your site requires insetting a small java script with a unique code into every page template in your site. Please contact the ESP team for support with signing up and installing your unique tracking code.

Using Google Analytics

1. Whole Site Overview After logging in and selecting your website you will be taken to the “Audience Overview” screen. By default this overview screen gives a visual representation through graphs and charts of the number of visits your website has had between two dates. To adjust the date range first click on the dates field in the top right corner:

Then chose a start date by clicking a day on the calendar, and click again on the calendar for the end date. When you are done click “Apply”.

Instead of “Visits”, you may want to know how many “Pageviews” your site has had. To do this click the “Visits” drop down and select “Page views”:

2. A Single Page To find statistical data on a single page click Content> Site Content> All Pages:

Here you will see a graph showing, by default the total page views of your site between two dates. Below the graph you will a list of your most popular pages in order of most pageviews. Again this data is filtered between the chosen dates.

To adjust the date range first click on the dates field in the top right corner:

Then chose a start date by clicking a day on the calendar, and click again on the calendar for the end date. When you are done click “Apply”.

To filter the data to only show statistics on one single page you need to enter the page URL (without the domain in front) into the search box. The easiest way to do this is to visit your site in a web browser and browse to your desired page. Then copy the last part of the URL, everything that comes after your websites domain name:

Now go back to Google Analytics and paste the section of URL into the search box and press Enter:

Finally you will be presented with your page (usually at the top of the list) showing the pageviews, and other data.

There may be other items which show up in the search results. These can come from search result pages and Print Template pages, which can usually be ignored.
