A message from Deb … Can you believe it is week 8 already? This term
certainly is flying by.
Last week students sat the Progressive
Achievement Tests in Reading and Maths
tests. These are the mandated tests the
Department of Education expect all year 2
through to year 7 students to complete. They
are done online. We use this data to monitor
student achievement. Our school has been using
them for 3 years now and have found them to
be very informative in terms of monitoring where
to intervene and support students but also where
we need to extend
and challenge.
Our Canteen needs you! Do you
have a spare hour or two?
Parents often comment on the
value of having a canteen on site.
Without parents volunteering we
may have difficulty maintaining
the service.
Here are the times when you could be rostered
on for one session once a term. It certainly doesn't
need to be every week. Your class parent will
be in touch about helping out. Each class will
be asked to have 2 parents donate whatever
time they can offer for one week of the term.
Session times: 10:15-11:15;12:15-1:45 or 10:15 to 1:45. Do you want to get in early and set up a time now with Karen Brimble? Email her on [email protected]
GROOVY …
DANCE A THON …
Tuesday September the 15th.
Goodwood Primary’s fundraising efforts makes
a huge difference to the resources and learning
environment we can create for your child.
The program for the day is as follows:
9:15 Whole school opening on oval.
9:25 Receptions, year 1s and IELC 1 dancing.
10:05 IELC 2, 2/3, 1/2 and year 2, recess at 11:05.
11:05 IELC 3, 3/4’s, 4/5, classes.
12:35 Year 5, 6 and 7 classes. Classes eat lunch
at 12:15 and lunch play time at 1:35pm.
1:35 Whole school gathering on oval, classes
will make a corridor of honour for the
older classes to walk through as they
move onto the oval, cheered by rest of
school. Official closing of the event. Fruit
given to each class.
It would be great to have you or other family
members join your child/ren on the day to cheer
them on.
We have some great, groovy music planned
with some good old classics included that
you would have bopped to in your day!!!!!!
Money collected can be returned to classes prior
to the event. Otherwise all funds will need to be
returned by Monday the 21st of September.
Many thanks to the Capri Theatre who have donated passes to the movies as incentive prizes. There will be incentive prizes for
each year level. The child who raises the
most money in each group will receive 4
Capri Theatre passes, the second greatest, 3
passes and the third 2 passes.
New Assistant Principal 2016-2018 It is with great pleasure that we welcome Catherine Murch to our leadership team for the next 3 years as Assistant Principal Quality
Teaching and Learning.
Term 3 ends Friday 25th September.
Early dismissal at 2:15 PM.
As you would be aware our oval needs to have some
more tender loving care. For the last 2 weeks of term,
throughout the holidays and for the first 2 weeks of
term 3 the oval will not be able to be used. We know
the wider community like to use it after hours and ask that you encourage people you may see in the
holidays to not use it. Thank you.
Collaborative and Engaging Student Free Training Day
We had a fantastic student free training day where our own staff and DECD
staff supported us in familiarising us with the Australian Curriculum in Digital
Technologies and The Arts – Drama.
Staff were able to get creative when we worked on the Drama aspect of the Australian Curriculum. An
entertaining version of Humpty Dumpty engaged actors and the audience demonstrating how students can
create meaning as drama makers, performers and audiences. Drama cannot be underestimated in terms of its
capacity to engage, inspire and enrich all students, exciting the imagination and encouraging them to reach
their creative and expressive potential.
Preschool staff worked with Ann Rieger, the Early Childhood Leader for Greenhill Partnerships, to look at
assessment for learning in the Preschool based on the Early Years Framework.
The next page provides photographic evidence of the Early Years Framework in action at the Preschool…………
The OVAL WILL BE OUT OF ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!
In terms of the two strands in the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies
we need to consider the relationship between key ideas and technology subjects as well as the ICT student
capabilities we apply across all learning areas.
Preschool assessment
As part of the National Quality Framework, the
Education and Early Childhood Services Registration
and Standards Board of South Australia is planning to
commence an assessment and rating cycle with our
Preschool service in accordance with regulation 63 of
the Education and Care Services National
Regulations 2011.
The purpose of the assessment and rating process is to
determine whether, and at what rating level, services
meet the National Quality Standard and requirements
of section 133(1) of the Education and Early Childhood
Services (Registration and Standards) Act 2011.
As part of the assessment and rating of our service,
an authorised officer will visit to observe practice,
engage in discussions with staff and educators and
sight relevant documentation.
This is a standard assessment all Preschools go through.
Our date is Monday September 14th. Our preschool staff
are very dedicated and committed educators and have
a great service they will be able to showcase on this
day. I thank them for all they do and the huge amount
of hours they give to Goodwood Preschool.
Kind regards,
Deb Brassington Principal
Tips from your Pastoral Care Worker….
Children’s dissatisfaction with the way they look is an
issue of increasing concern. Negative self-evaluation of
body shape may affect children’s feelings and thoughts,
and lead them to modify their behavior and develop
physical and psychological problems. Australian data
shows about one in three young people have issues
with their body image, with concerns highest among
females and young adults. In males, these issues are more
likely to arise in early adolescence while in females,
sensitivity to body image usually occurs in middle and
late adolescence (Kids helpline).
Body image is how you think and feel about your body,
and what you imagine it looks like. This may have nothing to
do with your actual appearance. Children can have poor
body image. Parents can do many things to foster positive
body image, confidence and self-esteem in their children.
There are many ways that parents can foster positive
body image and strong self-esteem in their children. If
you are at all concerned about your child’s body image,
self-esteem or eating behaviors, please see your local GP.
How as Parents do we help our Children?
Be a good role model. The most influential role model
in your child’s life is you. Parents can encourage their
children to feel good about themselves by showing
them how it’s done.
Suggestions include:
› Children learn eating behaviors from their parents, so
make sure you include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables,
lean meats, low-fat dairy products and unprocessed
cereals in the family’s diet.
› Don’t crash diet. Don’t encourage your child to crash
diet either. Studies show that many young people
think that crash dieting is a harmless and effective
way to lose weight. Talk to your child about the
dangers of crash dieting.
› Be aware of the impact of negative body talk around
your children, about your own body or other peoples.
Work on modelling a healthy acceptance of your own
body shape. Don’t complain about ‘ugly’ body parts
or, at least, don’t share your opinions with your child.
› Accept other people’s body sizes and shapes. Don’t
put a lot of emphasis on physical appearances or your
child will too. Instead, try to talk to your child about
all the different aspects that make up a person, such
as personality, skills and outlook on life.
› Exercise regularly. Have at least one family activity
per week that involves some kind of exercise; for
example, bushwalking, dancing, playing backyard
cricket, going for a walk or swimming.
› Be critical of media messages and images that promote
thinness or masculine ideals. Encourage your child
to question and challenge Western society’s narrow
‘beauty ideal’.
If you are concerned about your child a good place
to start is come and have a chat with the pastoral care
worker at the school. I am here Monday 8:30am -
1:30pm or Friday’s 8:30am - 1:30pm. You can make an
appointment with me by calling the school, emailing me
on [email protected] or just drop in.

BIG BOOK SALE This term Janet’s Year 3/4 students have been learning about sustainability and the actions of reducing, recycling, and reusing. We arranged a Big Book Sale during Book Week, giving everyone the opportunity to reuse second hand books that were kindly donated by students and the school library. We raised an amazing $527.50!!! This amount was donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Fantastic effort everyone!
Big Book Sale 2015
I see all the children & adults laughing & buying books
I hear the money clattering in the till & Claire shouting “Book Sale”
I hear the children saying “Oh no I forgot my money”
I hear the people saying “look there is a Book Sale”
I feel warmness inside my heart that I know I am helping people in need
I wonder if I could help the indigenous literacy foundation by myself in a fundraiser
I wonder if I have enough money to buy a book
I wonder if my parents gave me enough money

Massive Book Sale!!!!!
BY JASINTA
I SEE children reading their books on the floor and sharing what happens
I HEAR children talking about their books from the book sale
I FELT excited when I heard about the book sale and when the first class came in
I WONDER if the children love their books and read nearly everyday
I see: people smiling with books in their hands.
I hear: all the kids laughing and having fun.
I feel: wonderful.
I wonder: how much money we will raise.
I see: a smile on Janet’s face
