CARE MANAGER REPORT The busy month of December is well upon us and we are all getting into the Christmas cheer. We have many visitors and entertainment during December and this is greatly appreciated by all. So thanks to those who arrange activity and visits during December and the festive season. We send our thoughts to the families of Leila Honicke, Bill Brooks and Lois Davidson who passed away recently. We warmly welcome to Goodwin Village Margaret Landwehr, John Arnel and Betty Dainton. Several staff have resigned from Goodwin Village these last few months and we wish them all the best in the future with retirement, study and employment. Lynette Bertalli, Julia Pearse, Emily Mills and Mel Rotherham have all been valuable employees at Goodwin Village and we already miss them. Late in November we held a Dementia Australian information session for staff and families. The family session gave the well patronised attendees some useful information on Person Centred Care – which means each person has a different type of dementia and all are cared for in a manner that best suits their personal care needs. There were also some tips on “A Good Visit”. Some examples of things to do during a visit are listed here: Share photos Craft Fiddle mittens Quiet visits Memory book Gardens Drives Lunch Crops Cards Jigsaws Engage with the outdoors Shoe cleaning Rummage boxes Photo albums Visiting animals All attendees felt the session was helpful towards making their visits more meaningful and enjoyable. A pamphlet with things to do on visiting is available below the sign in book in the front foyer. Any further information you may like can be asked of the office staff or myself and we will access this for you. A reminder to all Newsletter recipients that if it is an extremely hot day drink water and stay indoors. Watch out for elderly friends and neighbours and seek help if necessary. At the hostel we have EXTREME HEAT DAY notices on our doors. At times the doors may be locked apart from the front entrance so if you find this just come to the front and you will be able to get in. Older persons dehydrate and become quite unwell more quickly than younger persons so we all must take care. “MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL” Lynne Walsh Care Manager Goodwin Village Newsletter Dec18/Jan19

BOARD NEWS LEVEE BANK

The Flood Committee are trying to access funding to ensure that Camp Street will be ‘blocked off’ with a demountable barrier rather than dirt as was originally planned. INCREASED AUTOMATIC WATERING

The contractor Scott Smith of SS Landscaping is well under way to completing the installation of the automatic watering outside the west, south, and east sides of the residential care building. It should be all up and going before Christmas. We hope to see a quick improvement in the appearance of our lawns in those areas. UNIT 31 RICHARDSON HEIGHTS

Trevor Flack has moved into Unit 28 Richardson Heights, and we welcome him to Goodwin Village.

REGIONAL ORGANISATION AWARD

It has been well publicised now but Goodwin Village was successful in its nomination for a Regional Achievement Award, as an employer of Excellence. The Board and Management of Goodwin Village would like to thank all people associated with the Village for making the Award possible. BENDIGO BANK

Goodwin Village has completed the transitioning it’s banking services to the Bendigo Bank. It is pleased to be able to support the Community bank. HOBSONS BAY TRADERS MARKET

Donald 2000 has been attending the Hobson’s Bay Traders Market on the last three Tuesdays. Goodwin Village has been represented at the Market as well. This is an attempt to promote the town of Donald as a destination for, employment, housing, tourism and sport among other things. The Market organisers were very accommodating and the Market attendees quite interested in our town. Offering a free ‘Kookas’ biscuit was a good way to get the conversation started. This also tied in with Donald’s endeavours to invite people to migrate to the town through the work of the MIGRANT RELOCATION COMMITTEE

COMPACT TRACTOR – FRONT END LOADER

The Board was successful in applying for a grant to fund a compact John Deere tractor fitted with a 4 in 1 Front End Loader Bucket. The grant funding was through the Department of Infrastructure Regional Development Stronger Communities Program. Our success in gaining the grant was confirmed by Andrew Broad Federal Member for Mallee. The grant received was half of the cost of the $23,000 tractor.

ACTIVITIES

Well we have been busy this week getting all our Christmas decorations in place and delicious puddings and cakes have been baked in preparation for that special day in December. The tinsel is hung, the trees in place and the carols will soon be in high rotation on our CD player! Our Melbourne Cup luncheon was again a very successful day with everyone getting out their best frocks and hats. A beautiful lunch was served in the warmth and comfort of Riverside Lounge, in stark contrast to those attending a cold and wet Flemington Racecourse! Our Lady of the Day was Mrs Dina Johnston and our Gentleman of the Day was Mr Charlie Herben. The sweeps were drawn, the “bubbles” drank, the scrumptious food enjoyed and a wonderful day had by all. We were delighted to be visited by Xanthi Rice and her little Prep students with their annual “Prep Circus”. We clapped and cheered as each child performed their act. Their acrobats, strong men, trapeze artists etc were fantastic and it’s always a joy to see their enthusiasm and young smiling faces. One of our regular men’s BBQ was enjoyed on the banks of the Richardson River with Acky and Anthony cooking a tasty meal of chops, hamburgers, sausages, onions along with a cool beer or two. We used our new gazebo to shade us from the sun but there will still plenty of flies to contend with…can’t have a “real” BBQ without them! A bus load of our residents along with three staff ventured over to Woods Museum in Rupanyup recently. A lovely time was spent perusing the many displays and sharing memories of days past. They have a huge selection of old wares ranging from shop displays to large steam engines. We all came home weary but with lots to chat about. Our other regular activities continue to be enjoyed with baking home made bread being one of our most popular. Bingo, card games, chair chi and pampering sessions are always favourites as well. We would also like to thank our volunteers and other visitors who come along and offer their time and expertise with singing, bible stories or just helping out with morning and afternoon teas. Thank you all! One of our long serving activities staff, Lynette Bertalli, is retiring this month. We thank Lynette for all her hard work and extra special care…she will be missed by staff and residents alike. She has promised to still visit as a volunteer and we look forward to her company.
