Goodbye to an Ol’ Friend
By Thomas DeJaegher
Downtown Melstone doesn’t have much left. The demise of Sportsman Bar has left the La-zy JC Drug store the only original brick build-ing in town. In March it was torn down due to the foundation instability. The Melstone Sportsman Bar was built in 1913, shortly af-ter the fire that destroyed all the wooden buildings on the west side of Main Street. All the new buildings were made from brick. The
bar was one of the last original brick buildings in Melstone. The Sportsman originally housed the W.A. Donaldson store. According to
Melstone: The Town and its Times, the store sold gro-ceries, furniture, dry goods, men’s furnishings and clothing-- pretty much any-thing but fresh meat. Jessie Peltzer bought the building in 1951 and turned it into the Sportsman Bar and Ca-fé. The Bar was a popular place in the 1960s with the booming oil business. Maureen Rademacher then
bought it in 1973 and ran it until she moved to Musselshell in 2003. She closed it down in 2003 when she moved and never re-opened it after that. The building had retained its original brickwork for a centu-ry after its construction. Main street doesn’t look the same without it.

The New EMT Barn
By Harry Griswold
The new EMT building is al-
most finished and looks like
it will serve the community
for years to come. The class-
room will educate the EMT’s
in an always evolving field. The inside is not fin-
ished yet, so the EMT’s aren’t able to utilize the
building yet. They’re waiting for their contractor
and plumber to come back and finish within the
next couple of months. Once everything is fin-
ished, the EMT’s will have an open house. The
grants and donations made by the community are
what made this building possible, and the EMT’s
truly appreciate everyone who has made this long
awaited dream a reality. The EMT’s are anxious for
the finished result.
When completed, the building will be 40’X80’ with
a classroom, bathrooms, and office. Helen Hougen
and Larry Zaharko have done a lot of ground work
for this project and have been a driving force in
getting the building to where it is today. The EMT’s
are looking to add to their roster in the near fu-
ture. If you would like more information on what
an EMT does, you can talk to the remaining EMT’s
(Rowdy Burns, Larry and Pam Zaharko). You can
also contact Ron Solberg from Roundup. He’s the
one who teaches the classes. His number is 406-
323-2314. I hope that the community is as anx-
ious for the building to be finished, so they will be
able to learn more about EMT’s and how they are
necessary to any community.

Dr. Justin Brewer By Kimber Korell
Our very own Justin Brewer is graduating from medical school. Son of Clyde and Cindy Brewer, Justin graduated from Melstone High School in 2009. Since then he went to college in Bozeman for his undergrad degree. Justin has his hooding ceremony on May 24th at Benaoya Hall in downtown Seattle, WA. He then will be starting a 5-year General Surgery Residency in mid-June at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor
Hospital in Ypsilanti, MI. After residency, he will most likely complete a more specialized one-year fellowship before coming back to Montana as an Attending. He and his wife, Molly, would like to end up in Bozeman, Billings, or Kalispell. Justin, we are so proud of you and hope to see you do great things!

Melstone History Book
For several months, a group of ladies has been
meeting on Monday nights as part of a two-fold
effort. The two main goals are to design a histo-
ry sign and to gather historical information for
a Melstone History Book
The group is asking past and present residents
of the Melstone area to complete a survey of
ten questions. This information will be used for
future historical projects or future school
reunions. There are three ways to
access the survey.
Paper copies will be available
at the Post Office or in the
school secretary’s window

Foreign Farewells
By Nienke
As every other foreign exchange student probably said in their
farewell story, I was shocked about the size of Melstone. I could
not believe that it was real. But, this was a great experience! My
favorite time was for sure volleyball season. Getting 4th place at
Divisionals felt amazing with this great team. Thank you Brayden
for this season. Prom was a night that I will never forget! Thank
you Wyatt for this great evening. I also want to thank Teigan and
Draya for teaching me how to drive a car. (I had never done that
before, and I wasn’t really good either!) Luckily, I will start my
driving lessons as soon as I get home! And we don’t have deer
running across the road so that will be good for me! I also want to
thank Mr. Eike and Ms. Kombol for teaching me how to play bas-
ketball; it was a great experience, and I would never have thought
that I would ever touch basketball. Thank you Ms. Wacker for
being a great track coach and for taking amazing pictures during
sports! I also got to go to California with BPA. That was such a
good week! I definitely want to thank Megan, Clyde and Cindy
Brewer for taking me in their house. You are amazing people who
made my exchange year perfect! Cindy is such a good cook-- she
is for sure better than my mom at home! I am so excited for this
summer (not because I’m leaving Montana), but because Megan
and Anna are coming to visit me in the Netherlands. After that,
we’re going together to Italy to see Anna’s hometown. Melstone
has taught me a lot this year, and I’m really grateful for that. I will
never forget this experience. I am so glad I got to share this expe-
rience with all of you! I promise that I will come back to Montana
sometime to visit all of you! Thank you Melstone for everything. I
had an amazing time that I will never forget!
When I knew I was going to Melstone, I was very surprised that
a small town like this exists. But it was amazing to think that I
would live in a place really different from France. I couldn’t
wait to come here. When I arrived in Montana, I was so excited
that I was restraining myself to run to see my host family. And
when I saw them, I was just so excited, and I couldn’t believe I
was finally in America. Sometimes it is hard to believe it even
after ten months. Montana is just so different: everything
seems big.
This year, I had the chance to discover how to play volleyball
and do track & field. I participated in BPA, band and choir too.
It is hard to believe that I had the option to do all these activi-
ties. I loved playing basketball this year, even if I had a hard
time understanding the different rules (who would have
known it was a serious deal to put the jersey in the shorts). I
never have that number of people watch my games in my life. I
had the chance to ride a horse too. It is incredible that I have
had all these firsts in only ten months.
I could never thank the Eike family enough for choosing me. I
learned so much from them, and they were really patient when
they didn’t understand me, or when I couldn’t understand
what they were saying. I’m really thankful to Linsey who cooks
breakfast every morning and makes sure I am okay even if she
has three other girls to take care of. Thanks to Ole who ex-
plained to me how the school worked and gave me interesting
facts about Montana. Thanks to Avery and Maggie for playing
with me and driving me on the four wheeler. And finally,
thanks to everybody that made me feel welcome in Melstone,
and that helped me all over these amazing ten months. I made
wonderful friends, and I hope I can see all of you soon.
Hi. I’m Oxane Mbiguino and I’m 16 years old. I’m from France. I
decided to become an exchange student because I wanted to dis-
cover the American culture and experience the American teenag-
er’s life. It was my dream to come in the USA to study.
Come to our party May 29th at

BPA Wraps It Up
By Ty Meredith
As the year comes to an end so does BPA, but be-
fore the year ended Megan, Tyler, Kimber, Nienke,
Oxane, Brody, and Draya went to National BPA in
sunny California. The group left on May 1st and re-
turned on May 7th. While there Megan placed 4th in
Interview, Draya placed 14th in Fundamental Word,
and Abby placed 19th in Desktop Publishing. Also
while they were there they went to Venice Beach,
Universal Studios, Disneyland, California Adven-
ture, and Santa Monica Pier. We officially ended
the BPA year with the Neon Dance and Talent
Show, and Spring Concert BBQ. Our chapter would
like to thank everyone who supported us this year.
We had a great year and are looking forward to
recruiting some new members for next year! Have
a great summer everyone!
