Lent continues until the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 9. During Lent, the decoration of the altar with flowers is not permitted, and musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to the singing. Exceptions include Laetare Sunday, solemnities and feasts.

Lenten Fast and Abstinence ǀ In the US, every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence from meat. Catholics aged 18 and over are bound by the law of fasting until their 59th birthday. The law of abstinence binds Catholics ages 14 and older.

Lenten Daily Masses ǀ Refer to Mass Intentions for a complete schedule of daily parish Masses. Note that a 6:30pm Tuesday Mass has been added at each location.

Happiness, Suffering and the Love of God ǀ 6:30-8pm Mondays ǀ seven weeks; began Feb. 24 ǀ Most Holy Trinity. Register at goodshepherdparish.us or 282-4812.

Haddock Suppers During Lent ǀ 4:30-6pm Fridays Most Holy Trinity Church Hall ǀ through April 3. Adults $11; Students (6-14) $5; kids 5 and younger, free. Benefits St. James School.

Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) ǀ Saturdays, 3 pm, Most Holy Trinity, St. Margaret and St. Joseph; 3:30 pm, St. Philip. Priests available upon request after most weekday and weekend Masses, or call office for an appointment. Special schedule for March 30-April 2, evenings when The Light Is On For You!

Lenten Vespers ǀ 4pm ǀ Most Holy Trinity Church ǀ Sundays

Stations of the Cross ǀ 1 and 6pm Fridays ǀ Most Holy Trinity ǀ and at 3pm April 10, Good Friday, at all churches (French at St. Joseph).

Lenten Eucharistic Adoration ǀ March 20 ǀ following 6pm Stations at Most Holy Trinity. Daily Adoration is available 24/7 at Perpetual Adoration Chapel, 27 Thornton Ave., Saco.

Easter Communion ǀ In the US, the obligation to re-ceive Holy Communion at least once a year may be satisfied from the First Sunday of Lent (March 1) to Most Holy Trinity Sunday (June 7). For a just cause, this “Easter Duty” may be fulfilled another time during the year.

LENT 2020 Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Catechumens and Candidates for Full Communion: As we advance into the heart of Lent, those preparing to enter the Church at Eastertime have begun a more intense preparation. The Elect, Penelopi Susan Berry and Emily Sue Brassley, are preparing for Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist; during Masses on the next three Sundays, they will celebrate the scrutinies, which are rites for self-searching and repentance. Stewart Randal Clarke, Bruce James

Cook, Mary Jane Cook and Timothy Allen Sargent were baptized in other Christian communities and are now seeking full communion with the Catholic Church; this will involve making a profession of faith and the reception of Confirmation and First Communion. Also, Tran Huyen Tran and Ange-Michaella Kamugisha are adult-baptized Catholics completing sacraments of initiation who will receive Confirmation and/or First Eucharist. Kindly support these candidates on their pilgrimage of faith with your prayers and affection. (2) I want to remind parishioners who have questions concerning our parish finances that the annual financial statements are posted on our website and remain there for your reference. If you have more specific questions, I do not consider any of this information confidential (except for salaries of lay staff members). Any member of Good Shepherd Parish with questions is welcome to contact David Gadbois at the parish finance office. He will be happy to provide answers to your questions or find out where to get it. (3) Feelings of hurt, emptiness and regret often impact not only women who get abortions, but their spouses, parents, grandparents and friends. Rachel’s Vineyard retreats offer solace, peace and inner healing to any individual connected to an abortion. The retreats provide a safe place for people to grieve the loss and to understand how abortion has affected them so they can grow beyond it. The next Rachel’s Vineyard retreat in Maine will be held April 17-19 in the Bangor area starting on Friday at 6pm and will conclude on Divine Mercy Sunday at 1:30pm. The registration deadline for the retreat is Friday, April 3 (pre-registration required). For information, call (207) 321-7897 or email [email protected]. All messages are confidential. You can also visit the retreat website at www.portlanddiocese.org/sites/default/files/files/RachelVinyardApril2020retreat.pdf. (4) A parishioner once asked me why people often say “bless you” after someone sneezes. I hadn’t a clue so I went online and found a possible explanation. The phrase is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great (540-604) who is said to have spoken “God bless you” during a bubonic plague epidemic in the 6th century, sneezing being one of the symptoms of the plague. Different languages and cultures have similar or other expressions (such as “gesundheit” (“health”) in German), but they seem to be related to the fact that a sneeze sometimes signals the onset of a cold or allergy. So “bless you” is a courteous way of wishing someone good health. (5) Thirty-one weeks into our 5-year Shepherds of Hope capital campaign, the amount pledged/donated contin-ues to grow weekly. Thus far, we have received 737 gifts and pledges amounting to $1,433,966 as of March 3, or some 71.6 % of our $2,000,000 goal. I am happy to report that pledges or gifts have been recorded every week since the start of our 5-year campaign. Please complete only one pledge card per donor, even if you happen to give more than originally planned. Clearly distinguish any donation to the campaign separately from other donations to the parish, perhaps by writing SOH (for Shepherds of Hope) and simply noting your campaign ID or even your envelope number on your envelope or check memo line. (6) Next to my weekly message on this page of the bulletin, we are printing a calendar of Lenten events in Good Shepherd Parish. You may want to cut it out and tape it to your fridge as a reminder. We will update it weekly. Copies of a two-sided sheet stuffed in the bulle-tin last weekend printed information, dates, times, etc. on Lent, Triduum and Easter as well as special events in Good Shepherd Parish in the near future. (7) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who collected and the one who burned last year’s palms to produce ashes for Ash Wednesday. Thank you!

Jokes Priests Can Tell, Volume 2 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne A businessman was trying to make a long distance telephone call. Again and again there was some foul-up: he got the wrong number; he got the busy signal. Impa-tiently, he asked the operator: “Am I crazy or are you?” “Sweetly she replied: “Sir, I’m sorry, but we cannot give out that information.”

Shepherds of Hope pledges ǀ For parishioners who have not made a pledge, we need your help. Please pray about taking that step. There are cards at each church or the parish office to fill out or take home for prayerful consideration. Bring pledge to the office or mail to: Good Shepherd Parish, 271 Main St, Saco. Note ǀ Any checks/cash can be dropped in

collection basket, inside a blank envelope and must have a name and ID number to receive credit. Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish; “Shepherds Of Hope” in memo line.

Current totals ǀ 737 household gifts ǀ $1,433,966 ǀ 71.6% of goal

We have created a link with the Shepherds of Hope logo at goodshepherdparish.us/. For assistance, call Amy Loring at 282-3321, ext. 105. WESHARE charges a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account: Fee is 10 cents per transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50 donation will include a 50-cent charge, plus 10 cents, for a total fee of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $49.40. * Credit, Debit Card Transactions: Fee is 3.25%, calculated as follows: A $50 donation will include a 3.25% transaction fee and amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the credit/debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding your source of payment. Thank you for your generosity.

Shepherds of Hope Pledge Payments ǀ Please note that if you intend to use ACH or credit card for payment and/or installments on pledge, you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service, WESHARE. Please do not include bank account information or cred-it card number on pledge card. Go to the parish website to sign up and make a payment or set up a recurring payment schedule. If you decide to use WESHARE, mark that on your pledge card so we han-dle the pledge properly.

Good Shepherd Parish ǀ Second Sunday of Lent ǀ March 8, 2020

February 28, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

May the peace and promise of Jesus be with you as we begin Lent, a season which re-minds us of that love which gives rise to all love: the love God has for each of us. Lent is about drawing closer to the Lord Jesus, whom we try to imitate in our own lives, and I hope it is a sea-son of grace and a time of joy for each of you.

An issue which strikes at the heart of our faith is sadly working its way through the legisla-tive process in Augusta. LD 1613 is legislation sponsored by Speaker Sara Gideon which de-mands that Maine taxpayers fund abortion services. You may recall that just last year, LD 820 passed and forced Maine taxpayers to cover the cost of abortions not covered by federal funds.

Now, Maine Family Planning (MFP) is asking for reimbursement of over $3 million in Maine tax funds ($2 million of it on an ongoing basis) to pay for MFP's refusal to comply with the Protect Life Rule which stops federal funding to organizations that perform or promote abortions. Maine abortion providers were the first in the nation to announce they would not comply with the Protect Life Rule and now demand that the Maine taxpayers pay instead. LD 1613 is an outrageous affront. Affordable, life-affirming health care is still available to all wom-en from Kittery to Fort Kent at federally qualified health care centers.

Last spring, polling showed that 62% of Mainers do not approve of tax money going to abortion. A test of society is its commitment to protect and care for its most vulnerable mem-bers, specifically, the unborn. This proposed legislation dismisses the sacredness of life from conception to natural death. LD 1613 forces taxpayers to fund an immoral act, one that cannot be justified in conscience or law. Mainers know that financial resources are limited. There are long waiting lists for the elderly who need care and inadequate staff of caseworkers to protect the welfare of our youth. Our legislators could spend more time and resources on saving lives rather than forcing bills that would end them.

Lenten Reflection 2020 ǀ Repenting of Ecological Sin and Cultivating Ecological Virtues Shared by Good Shepherd Care for Our Common Home Committee

Laudato Si’ reminds us that “the ecological crisis is . . . a summons to profound interior conversion . . . which entails the recognition of our errors, sins, faults and failures, and leads to heartfelt repentance and desire to change.” (217- 218) Recently, ecological sin was defined “as an action or omission against God, against one's neighbor, the community and the environment.” The seven deadly sins (pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, sloth) can be a way to examine where we have turned away from our Creator and creation. Below, each sin is examined through the lens of creation and is paired with an ecological virtue that can help us to restore our relationships and to live in sublime communion. (89) We invite you to reflect on one of these sins and virtues each week of Lent within your families, Laudato Si’ Circles, or communities.
