Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Beginning this Sunday and for the next 2 weeks, those preparing for

baptism at the Easter Vigil (“the elect”) undergo the scrutinies during

8:30 am Sunday Masses at Most Holy Trinity Church. These rites for self

-searching & repentance are meant to uncover, then heal, all that is weak

or sinful in the hearts of the elect; and to bring out, then strengthen all

that is good in them. The scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the

elect from the power of sin & Satan, so the priest adds a prayer of exorcism each week;

this is to protect the elect against temptation and to give them strength. These rites

should complete the conversion of the elect from their old way of life to a new way of

life – life in Christ. Let us pray as a parish that our elect may be given a spirit of repent-

ance, a sense of sin, and the true freedom of the children of God. (2) Beginning this

weekend through March 19/20, representatives of Esther Residence will visit our

church locations to sell raffle tickets for a handmade quilt. Proceeds will benefit this

ministry of the Good Shepherd Sisters. Located in the former Notre Dame Convent on

Thornton Avenue in Saco (and host of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel), Esther Resi-

dence is a transitional program for women who are leaving incarceration and/or a treat-

ment program. It provides a nurturing community based on safety, respect and dignity.

It focuses on assisting each woman in identifying and celebrating her strengths and

gifts. The home is a bridge that promotes healthy connections to family (when appro-

priate) and to the larger community. Esther Residence also provides short-term housing

for women who are awaiting admission to another level of substance abuse treatment.

Women are welcomed, and assisted in adjusting to live “outside”, supported in their

goal of staying sober, guided in learning new skills and invited to new recreational ac-

tivities. They cook, clean, relax, have fun, get a job, learn how to budget, pay rent and

plan for their next step. Daily reflection time provides additional support and encour-

agement. Good Shepherd Sisters & other women contribute time as staff or volunteers,

and many friends & Good Shepherd parishioners join this community effort to help

finance & support a special ministry. I strongly believe that this good work of mercy

deserves our support. (3) Jubilee Year of Mercy (February) – Visit the Sick & Comfort the Afflicted – This week’s suggestion: Add someone who is sick or in need of comfort

to your daily prayer list. Include those suffering from mental illness. Also remember to

pray for hospital staff members, health care workers and caregivers. (4) Assignment of
