Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) Children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on December 9/10 were well prepared. I am grateful to the parents, grandparents, other relatives and our formation staff for making it such a special event; many older siblings and adults also availed themselves of the sacrament. These children will now continue to prepare for the sacra-ments of Confirmation and First Communion next spring. (2) Our

Increased Offertory Campaign continues. If you have not yet done so, please pick up a packet after Mass, carefully read the brochure and prayerfully complete the com-mitment form. (3) Father Dominic invites you to a presentation about his life and mission this Sunday after the 10:30 am Mass at Most Holy Trinity Church. (4) Gifts and contributions supporting Toys for Tots are due this weekend. (5) Our final cele-bration of Advent Vespers will be at Most Holy Trinity Church this Sunday afternoon beginning at 4:00 pm. (6) The schedule of Christmas Masses is listed in this bulletin. I remind everyone that the vast majority of parishioners and visitors usually attend the 4 pm/4:30 pm Masses, so if you prefer less crowded circumstances, you may want to attend other Masses. Again this year, the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass at St. Joseph will include large screen remote video of the Mass for any overflow crowd downstairs in the church hall – about 1300 total participated last year, I believe. Rather than hav-ing large crowds standing out back (which is an uncomfortable situation with related safety issues), people will be comfortable in the hall with a printed program, a music leader, ushers, and seating; Eucharistic ministers will distribute Holy Communion at the appropriate time. The choir loft will be open, but only for as many who can be comfortably and safely seated there. Fr. Ron Labarre, Fr. David Schlaver, Fr. Joseph Manship and Msgr. Charles Murphy will help with our extended Christmas Mass schedule. (7) Our parish website (www.GoodShepherdParish.us) is frequently up-dated. You can find information at that location about many of our ministries including St. James School, our faith formation programs, and the two Catholic cemeteries; almost a year’s worth of weekly bulletins, including the most current one; scripture readings for weekday and Sunday Masses; ways to grow in one’s spiritual journey; information about preparing for and celebrating the seven sacraments in our parish; the parish schedule of events; links to Catholic radio, the diocese, the American bishops, the Vatican, and much more. (8) Thank You of the Week: When I was appointed pastor of Notre Dame Church in Saco some twelve years ago (September 2004), nine priests were assigned to serve the Catholic churches in Old Orchard Beach, Saco, Biddeford and Lyman. Since the merger of 2010, deacons have taken on responsibility for most of our funerals and weddings outside of Mass. Retired priests provide invaluable help and moral support for the three assigned priests. I realize that some things slip through the cracks, but I believe the most important needs are being met with the help of a dedicated staff and volunteers. Over and over again, parishioners quietly encourage their priests with friendly acknowledgement and prayerful support. Thank you!

Let’s recycle together We are asking for your cooperation. Please take note… we can only accept Brother, Dell, Canon, HP, Lexmark and Samsung laser cartridges. It is extremely important that you only leave us these brands for recycle. Inkjet cartridges need to be print head and name brand. Most of us have printers at home or work. Next time you have an empty first use cartridge, don’t throw it away! Just put it in a baggie or newspaper and bring to Mass with you. We have boxes placed in all the churches of Good Shepherd Parish. Everybody can help!!! Get empties from neighbors and friends. The benefits are huge. YOUNG ADULT/FAMILY MINISTRY

Saint James School was well represented at the Saco Festival of Lights.

A truck carrying a nativity scene was followed by students and parents

singing Christmas Carols.

Halfway into the parade a spectator told us that she

just said that there had not been one float with a

nativity on it and then we turned the corner.

Spectators were happy to say Merry Christmas and thank you to us all. It was followed by a pizza party and short movie for everyone to un-wind. We wish all parishioners a most blessed and Merry Christmas!

December 18 (Sun): Encounter & Christmas Caroling – Our final youth ministry event of the semester will be an Encounter

Holy Hour in Saco, followed by Christmas caroling at St. Andre Health Care in Biddeford. Both junior high & high school youth and their

families are invited to participate. The event will follow Encounter on Sun., Dec. 18. The Encounter runs from about 1:00-2:00 pm, and the

Christmas Caroling from about 2:30-3:30 pm. Please plan to attend the Encounter at Most Holy Trinity Church, and then arrive and depart

directly from St. Andre Health Care (407 Pool St.) for caroling. Songbooks will be provided. If you are feeling sick, please stay home out of consideration for the nursing home residents we will be visiting.

Otherwise, we hope you can join us!

Feb. 11-12 (Sat-Sun): High School Men's & Women's Retreat − Our parish will host an overnight retreat for high school men and women, featuring the YDisciples

sessions about true Catholic manhood and womanhood. It will begin Saturday evening and conclude with the

Youth Mass on Sunday evening. There will clearly be a strong social component as well! This is an event we plan to open to other parishes as well. Details are still

in the works, but please mark your calendars!

Saint James students researched ancient Egyptian instruments, and then created one of them in

music class. This coincided with their study of Egypt in social studies class. This is a great

example of how the curriculum from our specials classes is integrated with the

regular education classes.

SAVE THE DATE for the Catholic Women’s Conference in 2017! The conference will be held on April 29, 2017, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, at Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland. Keynote Speaker: Leah Darrow, author & former model on America’s Next Top Model.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS TO THE HOMEBOUND Good Shepherd has a small Christmas gift & card for the

Homebound of our Parish communities. Eucharistic Ministers to the homebound in our parish are asked to stop by the main

office and pick up a gift for those you visit.

County Toys for Tots Campaign” for children from families in need. There is a toy collection box placed in all churches through THIS Sunday, Dec. 18. Please bring in new, unwrapped toys, to help the less fortunate children in our parish communities.

What kind of toys are most needed each year? Teens age 13-17—Sporting goods, makeup, jewelry, watches, crafts, educational games, mp3 players, cameras, Lego sets, video gaming systems, headphones, hair accessories, movies and board games. Newborn to 2 years of age—crib mobiles, Johnny jump-ups, walkers, educational toys of all kinds.

Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair 2016

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I’ve said it before and I will say it again. To thank everyone

who had a hand in making this Christmas Fair a gigantic success would be an exercise in futility. Suffice to say that literally, thousands of

you came out in one way or another to show your support for your Christmas Fair and your parish. Once again this year, the spirit of

Christmas could be felt all weekend long at the Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair.

The fellowship was wonderful, with visitors coming from near and far to enjoy what has become a tradition for many families throughout

New England and beyond. At our post fair meeting, some great suggestions were made on how to

add to the fun and excitement in 2017. We will be sharing that news with all of you in the upcoming months.

And about the finances…we should be having some final numbers for you all very soon. Our parish ministries will greatly benefit from the

fruits of our Christmas Fair. Thank you all and on behalf of the Christmas Fair Committee:

The Friends for Life Project: As you know, Good Shepherd Parish has many elderly who are unable to attend church and even strug-gle to go out, especially with winter at our doorstep. From time-to-time we receive calls from these wonderful people, who are just looking for a visit and someone to talk with. We hope to develop a new program called "The Friends for Life Project," and with your help we can make this a possibility. New Parish App Coming Soon! In the coming weeks Good Shepherd Parish will launch our own app for iPhone and Android smart phones. This will allow us to better communicate with you throughout the week, and keep you updated with relevant parish news or

Please be aware that the parish office can only track your offertory dona-tions in our Parish Database when you use your OFFERTORY ENVE-LOPES! All donations received through your envelopes are recorded to your account. We are happy to provide you with a record of your dona-tions if need be. We will begin processing requests in mid January, and prefer handling these via email in order to reduce administrative costs to the parish. er amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are deposited to the
