GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH 2140 Main Street, Wailuku, HI 96793 (808)244-4656 OCTOBER 2018 I see dead people… I am not a fan of scary movies, at all. Scary movies are particularly good at getting under our skin, and not in a good way. I never went to see The Exorcist. Scary. Demons…. Brrr…. No thanks. But nonetheless I recognize certain images and plot lines from the movie even though I have never seen it. Pea soup. Enough said. Similarly there was a movie called The Sixth Sense in which a 9 year old boy says “I see dead people”. I never watched that movie and do not want to at all. Nonetheless, the sound of a vulnerable child’s voice saying those words makes me shiver inside still. It may be that this fear of the dead is a particularly western thing. Asian and Hawaiian and other indigenous cultures have a much more refined sense of honoring ancestors. By contrast I remember being in Sweden as a young man. A Swedish friend asked me if I would like to go to the cemetery with him because it was All Saints Eve. I asked him why and he said because in Sweden people go to the cemeteries and light candles on the graves of their loved ones, and he was going to light a candle on his father’s grave. I was 18 and I remember being “creeped out” as they say these days. My experience in growing up was that death was not discussed. It is perhaps most of all in America that Death was something to be avoided, and not talked about, which made it something fearful, a taboo. That is very unfortunate because we are coming up to a season that is very closely tied to well, if not seeing dead people, remembering and honoring them. All Saints Day is the church’s way of celebrating those who have died and are in the presence of God. All Saints reminds us that we stand on the shoulders of giants, whose strength, gifts and insights have gifted us who follow after them. There is a strong, powerful and mystic connection between those who have died and are in the presence of God and us who follow God It also reminds us that we have not inherited the world for our benefit but hold it in trust for our grandchildren. Those who went before us were stewards and channels of the gifts of God and that we, in our pilgrimage, also have kuleana to pass on to a new generation the gifts, faith, hope and love of God. Hallowe’en in this regard is mocking the darkness. Things that go bump in the night have no fear for us, who are children of the Risen Lord. Jesus’ triumphed over the darkness; for us the night is not “…. Dark and full of terrors”. Please join us at the parish Hallowe’en party put on by our youth on October 27, and on All Saints Day Eucharist on November 3rd and 4th. We will be taking your orders for memorial plaques then. GOOD SHEPHERD CHURCH

2140 Main Street, Wailuku, HI 96793

(808)244-4656

OCTOBER 2018

I see dead people…

I am not a fan of scary movies, at all.

It is perhaps most of all in America that Death was

something to be avoided, and not talked about, which made it something fearful, a taboo.

Peace be with you.

For the Love of God

The Plaques are Coming!

We are now ready to offer to parishioners the opportunity to order plaques for our new memory wall

The forms are in the mail. Parishioners are invited to consider those whom they would like to honor and memorialize with a plaque. You may place a plaque for any loved one for whom you would like to be held in memory. When installed it can be a place where when you pass you can offer a prayer for them and those that they have left behind.

We will be collecting the forms at the All Saints services on November 3rd and 4th. It will take a month to get the bronze plaques cast. Then in Advent we will get them mounted and bless our new wall.

The plaques will be 6” x 10” in size, as this sample shows. They are full size in the letters that have been sent out.

They are available for $850 each or two for $1600. The full amount from each plaque will be tax deductible and will be a donation to the building fund for future improvements to Good Shepherd.

If for any reason you did not get a form please contact Cora or better yet, get one at Church. They will be on the table at the front entrance.
