Good practices….
Minimal use of antibiotics…
High productivity…..
Christina FurustamFederation of Swedish Farmers
A tough journey with a very good ending
In a motion to the 1984 general assembly of the Federation
of Swedish Farmers it was proposed that the LRF should
work to sort out the differences in opinion between
animal farmers and authorities concerning antibiotics
as a feed additive. The reasoning was that a stop of the
use would be in the competitive interest of farmers.
Farmers were ahead of authorities.

Ban on antibiotics as a growth promotor
Growth promoting antibiotics did much more than promote growth….
they were and are a way to hide problems, not dealing with them….
Suddenly we had a lot of really sick and dead piglets….
The feed was not functioning well…
There were economic and other consequences for farmers….
….it was a time of trial and error with no quick fixes.….we had to change our management.
And consumer awareness was much lower in 1986 than today….
There were challenges of course…..
Good management
Animal welfare (production environment adapted to the needs of animals)
Sectioning the stables
All in, all out with a period of empty stables
Better feed
Eradicating diseases
Safe trade
