From the Principal’s Desk

Year 12 have two weeks before their Trial HSC Ex-

ams, beginning on Monday 10th August. Year 11 will

begin their yearly exams on the 7th of September.

Disciplined scheduling of the time for preparation is

essential for the best results. This is true for all of our

students at all stages of schooling. Review of the

exams is critical for growth and development and for

our HSC students and the study schedule through to

the HSC exams is mapped out. The support at home

from the families of students going through the HSC

in particular is very much appreciated.

Well done to all of our students who are doing their

best each day at Woolgoolga High School. Extra-

curricular events are scheduled throughout the

school year to reward students and provide positive

social experiences. The next school disco is sched-

uled for Wednesday 26th August.

Enjoy reading about our student’s successes and

upcoming events. We are all looking forward to a

very successful, productive Term 3.

Iain Henderson

Relieving Principal

Congratulations to

Guy Wright on such a

successful career in

education and best wishes

for your retirement

beginning at the start of

this term. Woolgoolga High

School has benefitted

greatly from your expertise,

passion and determination.

Term three has started many exciting events and

educational activities across our school.

Rehearsals for our Musical “Dracula Spectacula”

are in full swing. This is going to be a spectacular

production involving a huge cast and stage team.

Without giving too much away, these shows on

Wednesday (Matinee), Friday and Saturday

evening of the next two weeks will be amazing.

“Dracula Spectacula” is a fantastic opportunity for

our students. So you don’t miss out, please make

sure you book seats for your family at the front

office or at Woolgoolga Jewellers.

Please come along to our parent / teacher evening

on Monday 3rd

of August. Communication between

Teachers and Parents about your child’s

development is very important. Information about

the night will be distributed to students on Monday.

If you are not able to attend or would like a

telephone meeting, please phone the school.

Year 10 are embarking upon their subject selection

process for the Preliminary then the HSC. This is

an exciting time where career and future

possibilities are becoming a reality and a self-

determined future is not too far away. With a

suitable study pattern, support from our

specialised, experienced senior course teachers

and those key ingredients of great attendance,

determined effort and making good use of time in

and out of class, those aspirations can be

achieved.

Mr Guy Wright on receiving

the 2015 NAIDOC award.

Black Dog Institute to Deliver Presentation on Mental Health We know that good mental health provides a foundation for students to learn more and have positive relationships with peers, family and staff. That is why, at Woolgoolga High School, we think mental health education is very important. On Tuesday 4th August, Years 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to hear the INSIGHT presentation from the Black Dog Institute. The Black Dog Institute is a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders. Delivered by a trained presenter who has personal experience of a mood disorder or of caring for a loved one, INSIGHT is a 60 minute presentation on mental health developed by the Black Dog Insti-tute specifically for adolescents. It covers what happens if we lose our mental health, how we can get it back again and explains what resilience is and how to build it. INSIGHT is made of engaging and often humorous illustrations by bestselling author Matthew Johnstone. The images help explain concepts that are traditionally difficult to articulate. This presentation offers hope, wellbeing strategies, help seeking avenues, all while dispelling stigma. Below is the Black Dog Institute’s website as well as some other useful sites for adolescents and their families wanting more information:

Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery Visit Visual Arts students from Woolgoolga High School were fortunate to have been invited to attend a talk by

Stelarc at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery last Friday. Stelarc is a world renowned performance artist,

who has been traveling the world with his performances for over 40 years.

His works have covered a wide variety of techniques from his suspension series, engineered cyberbots, his

‘ear’, and avatars. He is interested in pushing the body’s boundaries using up to date technologies to

challenge possibilities. A lot of what he creates overlaps into scientific, engineered and medical inventions.

Students were entertained by his humour and range of creative installations. Stelarc believes that the

human body is increasingly expected to perform in ‘mixed and augmented realities and has extended his

own body by prosthetics, robotics, artificial intelligence and biotechnology to demonstrate this.

Students were impressed by his body of work and, along with numerous intelligent questions regarding the

body and science generally, had many questions for him. “What inspired him to become performance

artists?” To which he answered ‘I couldn’t paint’. “Did the hooks hurt for the suspension works?” “Were you

a weird child?”

This was an invaluable experience for all students who attended, especially those preparing for their Visual

Arts HSC. His articulate account of his performances had the audience captivated. Stelarc’s work is often

controversial and students left the gallery with a broader understanding of what art could be and how

science, engineering and art can overlap.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

There have been a couple of suspected cases reported. Whooping cough (Pertussis) is a bacterial

respiratory infection that can be serious in young children particularly those aged less than two

years.

Look out for following symptoms:

Persistent mild cough in the late afternoon or early evening greater than three days

Runny nose, followed by a cough, which becomes worse (older children and adults may have on-

ly a cough that can last for several months)

A cough that occurs in spasms, which may be followed by vomiting

A cough with a 'whoop' (a sudden noisy gasp at the end of coughing)

If you have any of the above symptoms see your doctor for a test and keep your child home from

school until you receive the result. If positive – exclusion from school for five days after commence-

ment of antibiotics or if NO antibiotics 21 days from the onset of the cough.

If you would like further information on whooping cough, please visit the website http://

Debating On Friday of Week 9 Term 2, the final double debate day between Woolgoolga and Toormina

Years 9/10 was held. Again the teams elected to debate the same topic: That we should ban

junk food companies from sponsoring sport. Year 10 defeated Toormina’s Year 9. Unfortu-

nately, Year 9 lost to Toormina’s Year 10 placing them second in the competition. Congratu-

lations to Toormina and best of luck in the next round.

On Wednesday of Week 10, the second round debates for the Years 7/8 teams were held at

Toormina High School. The Year 7 teams debated the topic: That school uniforms should be

abolished. The Year 8 teams debated the topic: That studying a language should be compul-

sory throughout High School. Students from both schools came up with some fantastic ideas.

Toormina won both debates.

Year 7: Shannon Cave, Amy Decent, Sophy Simson and Nimiah Anderson

Year 8: Matthew Dorahy, Kristy Golsby, William Hyde, Izaac Hovermann

Congratulations to all students for participating in these very interesting debates. The final

round of Years 7/8 debates will be held early Term 3.
