Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 4, 2015
Good News My mother was convinced that none of her children would get married. We were older when we were called to that vocation but, one by one, we did marry. I am happy to say that my husband and I continue to share this vocation three decades later, and we give our thanks to God. My sister was not as for-tunate. After years of abuse, she divorced her husband. She did not make that deci-sion lightly. She went into counseling, prayed, and talked. She considered her chil-dren, her husband, and herself. And she read and reread today’s Gospel from Mark. In the end, her safety and the safety of her children was a major concern.
Jesus railed against the ease of divorce. A man had simply to hand his wife a piece of paper, and he could do so for any reason, including infertility and a failure to please him. But Jesus advances the woman’s cause, refusing to allow her to be treated like a piece of property or disposed of at whim. He saw marriage as a sign of God’s covenantal love and lifelong fidelity and ex-alts it as a sacrament. When both spouses commit themselves to each other and to their vocation, this grace is made manifest, and their bond is strengthened. But sin and human brokenness can interfere with God’s plan, leaving separation or even divorce as the only option.
In the longer form of this reading, the peo-ple brought their children to Jesus, and he blessed them. Maybe we can do the same for those affected by abuse or divorce, so they too, at long last, can be healed.

“So out of the ground the Lord God
formed every beast of the field and every
bird of the air, and brought them to the
man to see what he would call them; and
whatever the man called every living crea-
ture, that was its name.” (Genesis 2:19)
The creation story reminds us of two im-
portant points. First, since the start, God
has put the entire world into our
care. Second, stewardship has been
around since the beginning of mankind, it
isn’t something recently invented by the
Church. Just as past generations built our
Church, it is now our responsibility to
continue to nurture and develop these gifts
for future generations.
From the Desk of our Pastor…
Thank You Pope Francis!
Now that the Pope has returned to Rome after his highly successful visit to the United States and his ad-dresses to Congress, the United Nations, the dele-gates at the World Meeting on Families and all the oth-ers who heard him live or in the media we ask: What are we to do? How are we to respond?
Someone said already: we need to go beyond admiring him and be-gin imitating him. This is the way that we can say that we have heard him. He has taught us by word and example. Can we smile? Can we show re-spect and care for all? Can we be patient and kind? Can we thank God for the food we eat by saying grace before and after meals? Can we care for the poor at home and abroad? Can we visit the prisoners? Can we welcome the immigrant? And much more. If we begin to imitate him we will show that we have really heard him, and we will begin to change the world, for the better, in the way that he has shown us. May we follow him and imitate him, Amen

Francis Corner – Feast Day 2015 Francis of Assisi is the most written about Saint in the history of the Catholic Church. Artists have made Francis the most painted figure except for Our Lord. Yet most portraits find it difficult to capture the ever present smile of Francis, and the joyous outlook that always accompanied him. Francis was deliri-ous with joy because he took such delight in each and every single gift of God. Every person Francis met, every creature which crossed his path, and every living thing on the planet was the object of his affection. If we are to enjoy the pure ecstasy which surrounded Francis, we must put on the eyes of Francis. We should implore Brother Moon and Sister Sun to open our eyes so that we may see what Francis saw. The old saying is that “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. So if we are to see as Francis did, we must think like Francis. The world of “Il Poverello”, the little poor man re-volved around the three P’s – prayer, the poor and peace. That can be our starting point. A “Francis tale” that speaks to us this Feast Day is Francis’ encounter with the leper. Usually, Fran-cis panicked in the mere presence of lepers. One day, suddenly courage overtook fear, and he was motivated to warmly embrace the leper whom he so feared. As Francis relates the tale, “immediately all that was bitterness turned to sweetness”. Francis’ conversion should inspire us. It should strengthen us to put aside the fears that we allow to bind us and keep us from reaching out. Here at our parish, we are blessed with a dramatic statue of the warm embrace of Francis and the leper; both bear the marks of the crucified Christ, the “stigmata”. What a powerful scene! There are throngs of “lepers” among those in San Jose whom we are privileged to serve. Wounds need heal-ing! Families need to be welcomed and fed! Dare we reach out? We might discover, as Francis did, Christ masquerading in the leper’s disguise. Joyous Feast Day!
