Good News from Goodwin March 14, 2008 FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL Debra H. Adamczyk After 26 years, Carol Morgan retired from Goodwin School on February 29, 2008. Carol has been the “face” of Goodwin for so long that it has been hard for us to imagine this place without her! Thank you to everyone who stopped by, sent a card, or called to wish Carol well. She was truly thrilled to hear from you. Carol has touched so many lives here – it was wonderful to celebrate her Goodwin years. We wish her well as she begins the next phase of her career. Carol will now work part-time at the Board of Education office. Thanks also to Rita Hannafin and Sue Chasin who have stepped in for Carol as we began the difficult process of selecting a new building secretary. They have been great! On Monday, March 16, we will welcome Jessica Gonzales as our new building secretary. Ms. Gonzales, a resident of Windham, has worked in the private sector and at the University of Connecticut. Selection Committee members Kelly Allen, Sally Clark, Sondra Boyer, Katie Irizarry, Carol LaVigne, Marie Lynch, Mary Mohan, Fred Baruzzi and myself enjoyed Jessica’s enthusiasm, love of children, and considerable skills. Please join us in welcoming her to this great school community. From Goodwin PTO Mark your calendars for a special upcoming event to benefit the Goodwin playscape. The Entertainment Night will be held on Friday, April 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the E. O. Smith auditorium. It will feature the musical talent of former Monkee Peter Tork, and his band the “Shoe Suede Blues.” Also performing will be Steve Diamond, a fantastically funny comedian, and “Shaky Johnson,” a local band that includes two Goodwin parents, Tom Warinsky and Kevin Abdullah. Ticket order forms were sent home two weeks ago and there are extra copies in the school office. Tickets are only $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Show your school support while enjoying a fun evening. If we sell 500 tickets, we earn $10,000 toward the playscape. Thank you, in advance, to the performers for generously providing this evening of fun. Thank you to Jeannette Picard for organizing the Backpack Brigade and thanks to all who attended and helped. The PTO would like to thank Carol Morgan for her years of dedication to Goodwin students, staff, and parents. We are all extremely sad to see her leave, but we are happy for her as she moves on to new horizons.

  • Good News from Goodwin

    March 14, 2008

    FROM THE DESK OF THE

    PRINCIPAL Debra H. Adamczyk

After 26 years, Carol Morgan retired from Goodwin School on February 29, 2008. Carol has been the “face” of Goodwin for

so long that it has been hard for us to imagine this place without her! Thank you to everyone who stopped by, sent a card, or called to wish Carol well. She was truly thrilled to hear from you. Carol has touched

so many lives here – it was wonderful to celebrate her Goodwin years.

Selection Committee members Kelly Allen, Sally Clark, Sondra Boyer, Katie Irizarry, Carol LaVigne, Marie Lynch, Mary Mohan, Fred Baruzzi and myself enjoyed Jessica’s enthusiasm, love of

children, and considerable skills. Please join us in welcoming her to this great school community.

    From Goodwin PTO

Mark your calendars for a special upcoming event to benefit the Goodwin playscape. The Entertainment Night will be held on Friday, April 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the E. O. Smith auditorium. It will feature

the musical talent of former Monkee Peter Tork, and his band the “Shoe Suede Blues.” Also performing will be Steve Diamond, a fantastically funny comedian, and “Shaky Johnson,” a local band that includes two Goodwin parents, Tom Warinsky and Kevin Abdullah.

  • In addition to all that she has done, she co-produced the PTO segment of the newsletter with Robin Blomstrann. Thanks again, Carol.

Incidentally, Robin Blomstrann has decided to “retire” from the newsletter along with Carol. Robin is currently co-chair of the Entertainment Night committee. She is looking for a creative individual to replace her and write the Good News PTO segment. Contact Robin at 429-8948 if you are interested in this position.

A Note from the Nurse: Dental health is such an important part of a child’s overall health and their ability to learn. A student may be perfectly capable of doing well on a test, but perform poorly due to a toothache. Regular dental check-ups and cleanings will help to keep a child’s teeth and gums healthy, and will help to detect cavities and oral diseases before they become a problem. I know that seeing a dentist regularly can be a problem as many people do not have dental insurance and just can not afford the cost of care. I would like to let you know about a dental clinic that will be in our area Saturday, April 12th and Sunday April 13th. The following is information from the Connecticut State Dental Association website about this program.

The Connecticut Foundation for Dental Outreach is proud to introduce the Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CTMOM). CTOM will be a large-scale, multi-chair dental clinic that travels around the state annually to underserved areas. The first event will be April 12-13, 2008 at the former Tolland High School in Tolland, CT.

The concept is simple: to create a multi-day clinic in a large facility and then open the

clinic door to the community. Dental services will be provided to anyone (children, adults and the elderly) who is without dental insurance and in a low-income situation. Patients will be screened and treated based on their most urgent dental needs. The best part about CTMOM is that this treatment is absolutely FREE! Services will be provided by volunteer dentists in this area, UConn dental students, dental hygienists and dental assistants. All services will be on a first come, first served basis.

    No appointments.

Services Provided: Cleanings, Fillings, and Extractions

Place and Times for the event are as follows:

Tolland High School (Former) 1 Falcon Way (Off of Old Cathole Road) Tolland, CT Clinic Hours:

Saturday April 12, 2008 5:00am - 5:00 pm Sunday April 13, 2008 5:00 am - 12:00 pm For more information you can call me (Carol LaVigne) at 429- 9082 or call Info Line at 2-1-1.

    LIGHTS OUT AMERICA

Do your part to help stop global warming

by turning out your lights and non-essential electrical appliances

    during EARTH HOUR

    on March 29th from 8:00—9:00 p.m.

For more details, check out the flyer in the

Friday Folder. Any questions, call the Rudd’s at 429-4469.

  • INVENTION CONVENTION

Are you always trying to build a new invention?

Have you already made an invention? Do you dream of ways to

    improve how something is built?

Would you like to write about your ideas and to share them with our school

and perhaps the state? Then take one of the packets in the office

for the Invention Convention and return it to me with your invention

by April 4th. The Convention is at Gampel on

Saturday, May 3rd. Check out their website at:

    www.ctinventionconvention.org

    GOOD LUCK INVENTORS!!!
