Living out the Gospel in a time of uncertainty and in the midst of crisis is nothing new for Christians. Indeed, the first 300 years of our community was spent en- during discrimination and even persecution for the faith. Living a life centered on hope in the midst of dis- tress is no easy challenge but one which we are asked to meet daily. How do we do this? Quite sim- ply: by being the Christian we would like to meet. Very few of us would enjoy spending time with “doom and gloom” believers, so why not take to heart St. Paul’s exhortation to rejoice in the Lord always? (Philippians 4:4) This does not mean we fake happiness but rather we look for the good in eve- ryone and everything and celebrate it. Then we hand the rest over to the Lord in prayer. One reason people often give for not going to church is that the people already there are more judgmental than the people on the out- side. The next time you are in church, see how we fare. How do we act toward one another in our community? If you were not already here, would our actions persuade you to join us? Our Lord’s trademark was compassion, literally, to “suffer with” someone. The old saying goes, “If you don’t know where you are going, chances are you’ll end up somewhere else.” Who and where do we want to be? If we are attracted to people of prayer, than we are to strive to be people who pray. If we are attracted to people who are involved and care for the greater community, then our vision should in- clude community action and care. Living out the Gospel in a time of uncertainty and in the midst of crisis is nothing new for Christians. Indeed, the first 300 years of our community was spent en-during discrimination and even persecution for the faith. Living a life centered on hope in the midst of dis-tress is no easy challenge but one which we are asked to meet daily.

How do we do this? Quite sim-ply: by being the Christian we would like to meet.

Very few of us would enjoy spending time with “doom and gloom” believers, so why not take to heart St. Paul’s exhortation to rejoice in the Lord always? (Philippians 4:4) This does not mean we fake happiness but rather we look for the good in eve-ryone and everything and celebrate it. Then we hand the rest over to the Lord in prayer.

One reason people often give for not going to church is that the people already there are more judgmental

than the people on the out-side. The next time you are in church, see how we fare. How do we act toward one another in our community? If you were not already here, would our actions persuade you to join us? Our Lord’s trademark was compassion, literally, to “suffer with” someone. How can we be the compassionate Chris-tians who are such powerful witnesses to the world? By

loving our neighbor as our-selves, even when it means biting our tongue.

Have a vision. The old saying goes, “If you don’t know where you are going, chances are you’ll end up somewhere else.” Who and where do we want to be? If we are attracted to people of prayer, than we are to strive to be people who pray. If we are attracted to people

who are involved and care for the greater community, then our vision should in-clude community action and care.

This year, the vestry will be asked to start the visioning process for St. Paul’s. We have clear goals with respect to our facility, now it is time to focus on our people and our mission.

Vestry elections will be held at the annual meet-ing and potluck follow-ing the 10 AM service on January 11th.

Please attend and prayer-fully consider who should serve on the vestry in the years to come. We have much work still ahead.

Finally, we are to follow through with daily prac-tice of kindness and prayer rooted in the life

and teachings of our Savior.

2009. A new year of hope and fears: a year in which hope can conquer fear if we focus on all that we CAN do. Given what we have accomplished in 2008, I expect it will be more than we know.

God’s peace,

EYC NEWS

EYC calendars were once again a sell-out! Thanks to the parish for your support of this

EYC fundraiser. The three week Thanksgiving altar experiment was successful in that the pumpkins did not

weep, although in writing this I just now remembered the supply of pumpkins and gourds I

stashed on the side porch to harvest seeds for next year’s crop. They should be good and ripe by

now. Thanks for the words of support from those of you who appreciated the bounty the altar rep-

resented. Thanks to Todd Green and Barbara Butler for assisting with EYC breakfast on November

30. Ellen Green and Hannah Carroll were early birds and we managed to get everyone fed. EYC

also hosted coffee hour that day. John Redding helped dismantle the altar. I’m forgetting to thank

someone else who helped, so please forgive me and accept this pat on the back. On December 7, EYC supported RiverBend Academy by attending the performance of

their students and the performance of Handel’s Messiah by the Owensboro Symphony along with

the Owensboro Choral Society and the Owensboro Symphony Chorus. We also supported the

Henderson economy with dinner beforehand at Hunan! Ellen Green and Madeline Hayes enjoyed

the evening thoroughly. Thanks to Iris for accompanying us. There were no participants for the Christmas caroling event scheduled for December 14.

We tried to coordinate a December 17 joint EYC/Holy Name youth group in conjunction with the

Advent series but as you will recall, it was cancelled due to ice. We will get together with their

group in the new year. On December 20, EYC helped for the second month of Angel Food Ministries food distri-

bution at Holy Name. Thanks to Warner Mattingly, Will and Dr. Beth for pitching in. I will be

available to take orders through Jan 12 for the January 24 distribution. Payment is by cash, money

order or EBT. The menu is available online at www.angelfoodministries.com and posted in the

parish hall. On December 21, EYC and St. Paul’s children gathered to decorate the Christmas tree in

the parish hall and to help with the decorations for the sanctuary. We went to Subway for lunch.

The Sunday school children made Christmas cards, and Ellen Green, Jacob Deep, Renner Wehr,

Jackson Deep and Dylan Turner went to visit several of our parish members and to sing Christ-

mas carols with them. Unfortunately, Patsy Reynolds was in the hospital in Evansville and Louise

Smith had just settled in for a nap after having been up all morning, but hopefully we brought

Christmas cheer to the other folk we visited. Aaron and Wendell Thomas brought treats for the

kids from WEHT25 and the FBI. Thanks to Leigh Ann Wehr for helping coordinate and for driv-

ing. In January, EYC will participate in Youth Sunday on January 11 and Bible study will re-

sume. As always, your ideas and suggestions are welcome.

Respectfully submitted,

Leslie Newman, youth director

Christian Formation

St. Paul's Atrium for our youngest members and visitors welcomes parents and grandparents to stop in and observe or ask questions. We appreciate the volunteers who have taken on various projects to build the atrium's materials. Children can trace seasonal prayers using cards Leigh Ann Wehr prepared, they will be able to anticipate the upcoming seasons using the calendar puzzle Iris Gentry painted and they can recognize the changing seasons by the linens on the prayer table thanks to the sewing talents of Barbara Butler. Each contribution provides learning experiences that strengthen the next generation's formation in the Church. You are asked to keep the atrium and our catechist, Monessa Curry, in your prayers. What better gift can we give our new born Savior than the desire of our youngest to learn and grow in him?

A Note from the Capital Campaign

Bob Strange has left but we continue on from his great leadership. Blessings continue to flow, as we are now over $800,000 in our fundraising efforts. Larry Wehr is leading the charge for the major projects. He has met with the senior war-den at Hopkinsville Grace Church. They are just ahead of us in their renovations and have been a tremendous resource for us. The kitchen is almost completed and looks wonderful. It is amazing what a few coats of paint and new floor can do. The kitchen is clean and bright. Kudos to all involved in this project. (See picture below)

The process from here is to prioritize the needs of the

church. Lary Wehr and his committee will put together

the list of needs with estimates and in what order they

should be accomplished and will present this to the

Vestry in January for approval.

We are a congregation of strength and faith and it has

been clearly demonstrated throughout this campaign.

St. Paul’s Vestry Minutes November 19, 2008

Members present: Susan Sauls, Retia Denton, George Caddick, Louis Smith, Charles Johnson, Todd Green, Becky Stone, Larry Posey, Ben Cubbage, Susie Watkins, The Rev. Dr. Beth Macke

Others: Lary Wehr, Cooper Lilly, Leslie Newman

Bob Strange opened the meeting with a motivational video and the rector prayed with us.

Due to the resignation of Mrs. Clark, Susie Watkins was appointed clerk for the months of November and December.

Reports:

Minutes: The minutes were reviewed and George Caddick moved we accept the minutes with clarification of the state-ment about liability to the Preston Foundation. Larry Posey seconded. Motion carried.

Capital Campaign: Bob Strange gave a brief report of progress of the campaign so far with emphasis on the success of the Celebration Dinner. At this time, our goal is $750,000 of which a little more than $700,000 has already been pledged.

Trust Accounts Review: Cooper Lilly, OV Bank, attended the meeting to review our accounts and explain trusts. (A booklet was provided.)

Major Projects: Lary Wehr presented a summary of special projects. All areas have not been addressed yet. These are bids received so far. Needs have not been prioritized yet, but feel the roof and HVAC will be top priorities.

I. Structural Engineering A. Schnell B. Waiting for 2 more bids

II. Roofing A. Embry’s: one estimate for 30/year GAF shingle—with the option for 50 yr shingle—at additional

cost B. ACE—30 year shingle--

III. Bell Tower Louvers A. Schnell

IV. Church Windows—Stained glass—replacement cost A. Willet-Hauser B. Church Art Glass

V. Classroom Windows A. Precision Glass—one estimate for sliders; a higher estimate for casement

VI. HVAC Engineering—to bring current system up to code A. Acura—includes design, owner’s representative B. PCI-- design only price, and a budget price for owner’s representative

VII. HVAC Repair Costs A. Tri-State Sheet Metal B. E & M – waiting on number

Youth Report: When Fr. Morrison established a position and budget for youth director approx. 15 years ago, he felt that it was important to “feed” the youth this was basically the only parameter she was given. This program is just grades 6-12—not the younger children. (We had a Sunday School director until Leigh Ann Wehr resigned.) A budget was estab-lished with about $500/month. Leslie was requested to submit a budget using past expenses as a guide. Now EYC pays all expenses for all youth related expenses. The average expenses/month average about $250-270/month—excluding salary. The money primarily in the past has come from calendars sales and various other fundraisers and designated do-nations.

Page 8: GOOD NEWS January 2009GOOD NEWS January 2009s3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/… ·  · 2008-12-31order or EBT. The menu is available online at and posted in the

November Vestry Minutes – Page Two Beth clarified the policy of requiring two adults for each activity—this is a requirement of Church Insurance Corporation. In order to do this, we need to get more adults involved.

Becky suggested that we solicit volunteers. So far parents have helped. It would be good to have others involved. Events could be posted and ask for volunteers.

Addressed concerns that the children pay for nothing. Questions asked about donations for program. Earlier, there were two accounts. Money was deposited in a savings account from fund raising for a mission trip. We will have to decide at what level we will fund.

Rector’s report: Advent activities are planned with Holy Name and Community Thanksgiving service will be at the Pres-byterian Church.

Sr. Warden: Closed on Washington Street properties; Lou Ann Clark resigned as a member of the Vestry

Jr. Warden: Roofing issue—leak in roof on “Mann” house. The cost for replacing roof is $15,000 by Mr. Gossett. It would be up to almost half this to repair with no guarantees that more repairs won’t be needed$2500-$4500. This is the one property that is garnering to most interest and a new roof would be a selling point. How would we fund it? Building fund is at $11,000. George Caddick moved that we transfer money back from capital campaign that we advanced back to the general fund. Susan Sauls seconded. Motion carried. We will get a firm bid for replacing the roof. If we do this, will it affect the sell price of the house? Todd will pursue getting bids ASAP and get back with the Vestry.

One of the furnaces at the dentist office died. The best option was to replace it. This expense was taken from operations--$1400.

2009 Preliminary Budget and Treasurer’s Report: We reviewed the Preliminary Budget to be finalized after Steward-ship Campaign. (See attached report.) George requested we review the budget and make recommendations as to changes which we will go over at the next meeting. Beth requested that we go over budget carefully and discuss it before the next meeting. The following points in particular were discussed:

--line item in budget for youth expenses, and paid youth director Consensus is that we need a paid person in that position and some money to pay for the programming.

--building fund: should we continue to put $500/month to cover “unexpected” expenses in light of the capital campaign?

--salaries—should cost of living raises be given in light of current salaries?

The financials were reviewed. We need to await the audit report to clarify questions about accounts/expenses.

Vestry Nominating Committee: Retia Denton and Susan Sauls volunteered to get a pool of names for consideration. Suggested that we put item in newsletter to ask for suggestions or interest in serving. Again we will put out a “box” for nominations.

Next meeting will be December 16, 2008 at 6:00.

Closed with prayer. Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, Susie Watkins, Clerk
