Material Cycles
The flow of an element through the physical environment and living tissues of an ecosystem
What is Recycled?
More than 30 chemical elements are cycled through the environment by material cycles
Some examples are : Water Carbon Nitrogen Phosphorous
Water cycle Water ______________ into clouds. Water falls as _________________. ________ & _________ forms fresh lakes,
rivers, ponds, streams, and ground water. ___________ take up water Water returns to the atmosphere through
the process of _____________ & ________________.

Carbon Cycle
1. In the atmosphere as carbon dioxide(CO2)
2. In the ocean as dissolved CO2
3. As calcium carbonate, which is part of bones and shells
Where is Carbon found?
Carbon Cycle Plants take in CO2 and use the carbon to
make carbohydrates during photosynthesis.
Carbon (in the form of carbohydrates) is passed along the food chain.
Carbon Cycle Carbon is released
into the atmosphere by volcanic activity, respiration, burning of fossil fuel (industry), and by decomposition of organic matter.

Nitrogen Cycle Special bacteria which live on plant
roots, take N2 from the atmosphere and convert it to ammonia (NH3) in a process called nitrogen fixation
Other bacteria break down ammonia from decaying organisms into nitrite (NO2-) or nitrate (NO3-) which is used by producers and consumers
INORGANIC
a (1) : being or composed of matter other than plant or animal :
EX. mineral (2) : forming or belonging to the inanimate world
Phosphorus Cycle Found mostly as inorganic
compounds (minerals)
1. On land in rock and in soil2. In the ocean as sediments
Calcium Carbonate Shell
Phosphorus rich Sediment
Phosphorus Cycle
Producers are able to bind phosphate into organic compounds (usable to us).
The producers get eaten by consumers who then acquire the phosphorus for their own use.
What do they use it for???…
