JULIE ZANCANARO 2017

KEEPING THEM MOTIVATED!

Make hard work fun!

Make starts and finishes positive – they will remember!

Smile and be enthusiastic (even on a bad day).

Be genuinely interested in them. Remember names and at least one thing of importance (eg. a pet; baby brother; singing lessons).

Find new and interesting ways to practice old skills (eg tug of war kicking with a board and partner, or gliding through a small hoop for streamline)

Teaching Essentials

Page 12: Good eye contact Calm voice Stay at their level ... · Creative / out of the box thinkers Attention to individual needs whilst maintaining class structure and flow Ability to be present

JULIE ZANCANARO 2017

KEEPING THEM MOVING!

Position yourself as the target for beginners to swim to

Teach patterns and formations and use them consistently (clockwise lane work; triangle; wave; staggered wave; paired lane work; corner)

Play games that teach children to watch for their turn and respond quickly (eg. snow; row; toe; hello; go!)

Mark the wall for a “stop” and “go” position

Take turns as leader (eg. chiefs and Indians)

Number off for fun (eg. sharks and dolphins)

Short quality repeats, keeping most or all swimmers in motion

Grade well. It is hard to keep classes moving if levels are diverse

Minimize downtime and waiting for turns

JULIE ZANCANARO 2017

BUILDING GOOD FOUNDATION SKILLS!

Have well structured and progressive classes. Know your progressions!

Assess readiness well. Swimmers must be physically and mentally ready for each new skill

Build the stroke. Ensure skills are well learnt and autonomous

Simple drills performed perfectly and repeated often are valuable. Poor swimming or poorly performed drills create bad habits

Consolidate body position and kick before developing stroke

Ensure technique is held by not moving on to new skills too quickly

Maintain continuity of skills, drills, language and terms

Assess and grade continually. Reward success by promoting promptly.

BEING AN EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR!

Give young children and beginners just 1 or 2 instructions at a time.

Use facial expression, hand signals and body language well.

Praise effort, give constructive feedback thoughtfully.

“Sandwich” constructive feedback between 2 positives.

Own your feedback, use “I” rather than “you”.

Use the 3 “C”s (clear, consistent and concise).

Use demonstrations whenever possible.

Use imagery, tell stories and paint pictures in their minds.

Always have your lesson planned - preferably on paper

Each drill, activity or game must have a sound purpose.

They need to be fun AND developing important skill

Don’t be afraid to challenge them, but don’t push too hard.

Take them back to a competent level to rebuild confidence

PLANNING TO SUCCEED!

JULIE ZANCANARO 2017

Always acknowledge and reward effort, even if it doesn’t lead to success.

Make rewards meaningful and appropriate to age and interests.

Remember the value of non tangible rewards (game; high 5; a smile).

Establish goals and expectations wisely. Make them SMART. Share them!

Make rewards immediate whenever possible.

Break down longer goals into smaller steps with small rewards.

Help them value each step along the way!!

A good teacher is a precious commodity - be proud and enjoy your work and remember to reward yourself!

REWARDING EFFORT AND SUCCESS!

A teacher that is an expert in their knowledge as an educator, but who also strives to learn more from each and every new situation and add to their experience.

They are patient and willing to try many different approaches when teaching as not one method suits all children.

They encourage and help their peers by using different techniques and language to help in difficult or challenging situations.

They treat each and every child as a unique and special individual, and use patience and positivity to create the best experience and achieve great results in their swimming education.

A master teacher has a can do attitude towards their students, their peers, their Managers. They respect the Hills Swimming values and they embrace the "vibe" of the team.

A master teacher shouldn't just be someone who has been at the swim school for a particular length of time.

They should be dedicated and passionate,

Always wanting to learn … an informative teacher.

Someone who questions why we do things.

Adaptable to change.

High student retention rate.

Someone who is consistent.

Someone who understands why we teach the way we do.

Someone who has shown improvement.

Someone who can focus on the skill of swimming not the disability of the student.

Someone who can also recognise and reward the "trying“, the progress, and efforts, rather than justfocusing on mastering the skill.

Someone who understands the basic development and age appropriate actions of a child. Why they mayact in certain ways at certain ages.

Someone that focuses on the human in front of them - not just the outcomes they want from them.

When a teachers focuses on the little person and the cues that the student is giving rather than the outcomes the teacher is trying to achieve....then they have truly mastered teaching.

Being versatile and adaptable and willing to work with the student and parent rather than just within the structure of their regular class or plan.

Someone that can master the art of distraction is a master teacher....one that focuses on the options not the limits or the behaviours.

Someone that teaches joyfully and with encouragement.

Someone willing to learn more about the students, and more about the why's and how's.

Someone who is a team player. One that understands it takes many people to achieve great results.

Master Teachingin School Education

While some believe that master teacher awards and years of service make an educator a master teacher, we prefer a definition based on more intangible qualities.

Qualities of a Master Teacher

We believe that master teachers are leaders who have mastered the management of their classrooms and found a way to accelerate learning for all their students. These educators are exceptional communicators who have a strong connection with their students.

A master teacher recognizes that the education process is about much more than sharing content. It’s about creating independent learners who have the critical thinking skills to grow and thrive. These educators put their students first and adapt the curriculum to their learners’ needs.

Master teachers hold their students to the highest expectations. They conduct regular progress monitoring, adjust their teaching approach as needed, and empower their students to take ownership of their education.

The master teacher mindset is one of systematic problem solving and personal accountability. These teachers are continually seeking out opportunities to better themselves as professional educators. They have the ability to look through a broad lens and communicate honestly about issues in their classroom, as well as with parents and administrators

You will complete training and gain accreditations on-site from some of the Worlds Best Aquatic Training Organisations

Hills Swimming (Deny and Julie) have trained swim teachers throughout Australia, as well as Europe, South America, New Zealand, North America and the Middle East over the past 30

years. They have been major contributors to both the AUSTSWIM and Swim Australia National Teacher Training Courses.

Swim Australia is our National Swim School Association and is a part of the Australian Swim Coaches and Teachers Association. They provide Teacher Accreditation Courses and ongoing

Professional Development to Swim Teachers. They also provide extensive resources and support to Swim Schools.

AUSTSWIM is the first and most established Swim Teacher Education organisation in Australia providing Accreditation and ongoing Professional Development for Swim Teachers. In the 20th

Century it was our only accrediting body for Swim teachers and Deny and Julie were major contributors to the development of resources – especially in the Infant and Preschool area.

Royal Life Saving is the largest water safety organisation in Australia and provides Resuscitation and Advanced Water Safety Accreditation Courses and Water Safety teaching
