Good Day, OLA Feature: Interview with Mrs. Gabriel

She said the best part of

being a teacher is seeing the

look of “Yes, I can do it!!”

when her students are

dealing with something

challenging.

In her spare time, Mrs.

Phelan likes to read, do

needlework, play a little

golf, and travel. For the past

two years, Mrs. Phelan was

the president of the Phyllis

Allen Smith North Shore

Reading Council. She plans

on continuing to be an active

member of the reading

council. After retirement she

would be happy to come

back and substitute if

needed. We wish Mrs.

Phelan a happy and healthy

retirement, and we look

forward to her visiting OLA.

After 42 years of dedication and devotion to the teaching

profession, Mrs. Phelan is retiring. Before OLA says goodbye,

we wanted to take this opportunity to talk with this remarkable

teacher. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mrs. Phelan worked in an

office. She started in the mail-room and worked her way up in

the company. But in her heart, Mrs. Phelan knew her true

calling was teaching.

Mrs. Phelan’s classroom experience spans from kindergarten

through fifth grade. At one time in her career, Mrs. Phelan was

a principal and a reading resource teacher. During her career,

Mrs. Phelan taught at four different schools; Cheverus, Blessed

Mother Teresa, St. Patrick’s, and of course her last stop here at

OLA. Mrs. Phelan enjoys working with all age groups, but has

a soft spot in her heart for the younger children.

Mrs. Gabriel will be retiring from Our Lady’s at the end of

the school year. We wanted to talk to this extraordinary

teacher about her career and what she plans on doing after

retirement.

Mrs. Gabriel, a Salem State University graduate, has been

teaching for a total of 31 years. Twenty of those years have

been here at OLA. Mrs. Gabriel can trace her interest in

teaching back to her high school years, when she and her

sister taught CCD classes. She also taught GED prep courses

to high school students. In fact, it was Mrs. Gabriel’s sister

who inspired her to be a preschool teacher.

Mrs. Gabriel’s favorite subject to teach her students is

Religion. She likes sharing her faith with her young students.

Her favorite part of being a teacher is watching her students

grow physically, mentally, and spiritually. She enjoys

watching how confident they become when learning new

things.

For many years, Mrs. Gabriel has been active in her parish,

Saint Thomas Apostle. She is the Chairperson of Liturgy at

her church. She plans on continuing parish work, and she

would like to still be active with the OLA Drama Club. In her

free time, she enjoys singing and dancing, along with

watching her favorite TV programs.

After retirement, Mrs. Gabriel will certainly have her hands

full with a growing family: a two year old grandson and

newborn twin granddaughters. We all wish Mrs. Gabriel the

best on her next journey in life. The sound of her laughter will

surely be missed by all here at OLA.

After 5 years of being the principal

of OLA, Mr. Grocki is leaving our

school to become the vice principal

at Bishop Fenwick High School.

During this period of time, there

have been some changes at our

school. OLA now has iPad tech-

nology, a new preschool play-

ground, and a school program for

three year olds.

But Mr. Grocki did not always aspire to be in the teaching

profession. When he was a little boy, Mr. Grocki wanted to be

a police officer. As a young man, he worked on a golf course, at

a restaurant, and with special needs children. Prior to being a

math teacher and a freshman football coach at Malden

Catholic, Mr. Grocki had a career in finance. Of all the jobs

Mr. Grocki has had in the past, he said being a school

principal has been the most rewarding.

Mr. Grocki leaves OLA with many wonderful memories:

participating in the second grade art class (now the sixth

grade), the eighth grade class trips to New York City and

Philadelphia, the March for Life, and all the students and

faculty members. But what Mr. Grocki is most impressed and

proud of during his five years here at our school is to see the

culture and the climate change at OLA. We all join together in

wishing Mr. Grocki well in the next stage of his life.

Thank you, Mr. Bachner!

Mr. Bachner, teacher: funny,

nice, and helpful. Mr. Bachner is

all you can ask for in a teacher.

Now that he is moving up to the

position of Vice Principal, we will

miss his lessons on subordinate

clauses! Without him, Language

Arts will never be the same.

Though it might seem boring to

most, a double period of English

with Mr. Bachner, has been like

An oasis in the desert of a long school day. His fun style of

teaching and helpfulness in the classroom has made his room

the best in the school. While he may not think so, he is

certainly a great teacher and fun person. Thank you, Mr.

Bachner, for being a great teacher.

Mr. Bachner, the Drama teacher: energetic, talented, and

patient. Thanks to Mr. Bachner and Mrs. Gabriel, the OLA

Drama Program has returned to OLA. We are very thankful

that you taught all of the members how to act, sing, and

dance. Through drama, you and Mrs. Gabriel encouraged us to

perform with confidence in front of our school and

parents. From the Christmas Carol, to Zombie Night, Villain

School, The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree, The Snow White

Variety Show, and the latest production Don’t Stop Believing,

everyone is so very grateful. Thank you, Mr. Bachner, for

being so inspirational in the drama program.

Congratulations on becoming Vice Principal, and good luck in

the coming year!

The Student Council of OLA has been around for over 30

years. Their goal is to raise money and to help out around the

school. The many school events, in which the Student Council

participates are: the Monster Mash, the Turkey and Pumpkin

Contests, the Easter Breakfast, the Masquerade Dance, the

Valentine Lollipop Messages, and the annual Talent

Show. Also, the Student Council holds fundraisers , often by

raffling off Bruins signed memorabilia. A few years ago, the

Student Council raised $800.00 and donated it to the

renovation of the preschool’s playground. Other donations

have been made to both My Brother’s Table and to St. Thomas

for the annual Christmas Toy Drive. Food drives during both

the Lenten and Advent seasons help the needy along with

local families. The Student Council even raised enough

money, in 2016, to purchase new speakers for the music

room. Things could not run smoothly without some help. In

the 2016-2017 school year, the president of the student council

is Leah Malala with the Vice President being Christopher

West. The secretary is Abigail O’Connor, and the treasurer is

Kathleen Morrison. This year, every Monday, council

members help serve food in the cafeteria and give up recess

time to help Mrs. Gaeta in the library. The Student Council

advisor is Mrs. Burns, OLA’s fifth and sixth grade math

teacher, and recycling guru. She oversees and participates in

all Student Council projects.

Of course, all that the Student Council does and all the

donations that are made, could not be made possible, without

the caring students and parents of OLA.

YouTube: Dance Like Me

By: Kaitlyn Lehman

Dance Like Me is a song from an EP (an album with few

songs) written by two twin girl YouTubers named Brooklyn and

Bailey McKnight from Allen,Texas. This song maybe favored by

girls, which makes it the perfect song for parties, sleepovers, or

just to dance around your room!

The song “Dance Like Me” by Brooklyn and Bailey is a song

that had a lot of fan communication, which means their fans

had a lot to do with it. Their fans were asked to vote on the

bass line, claps, chants, and drumline, which were key parts to

their song. Brooklyn and Bailey stated that it was not only

their song, but their fans song as well. Also in their lyric video,

they had a collage of their fans dancing to the song. The song is

about bringing people together through music.

The song was released March 3, 2017. The song has a run

time of 2:52. You can purchase the song on iTunes for $1.29.

The song was rated four stars by iTunes customers, and I too

would give it that rating. These social media stars are making

quite a name for themselves.

Movie: Beauty and the Beast By Julia Stasinos

In a small town in France lived a girl named Belle (Emma

Watson) who was courageous and loved to read. Many people

adored her beauty, especially Gaston (Luke Evans), who

proposed to her. Belle refused, but Gaston did not give up.

Because Belle’s mother died when she was a baby, her father

Maurice(Kevin Kline) raised her.

One day Maurice set off to the invention fair. As he

traveled, the weather turned bad, and he ran into wolves,

only to find himself at the entrance of a big beautiful castle.

Since it was snowing , he decided to go in. While he was

inside, he remembered Belle requested a rose. Just as he

was about to grab the flower, the Beast captured him and

dragged him to the dungeon. Belle found her way to the

castle and found Maurice in the dungeon. Belle took her

father’s place. She lived in a castle filled with books, a beast,

an enchanted rose, and living objects. Things were very

different in this castle because an old beggar woman cast a

spell on the Beast and the castle workers. Gaston got jealous

and tried to kill the Beast because Belle had fallen in love

with him. The spell was eventually broken because the Beast

had learned to love someone other than himself. The beast

turned back into his human self, along with all the workers

in the castle. The dancing and the singing was excellent in

this movie. This movie is rated PG and is now out in DVD. I

would give this movie:

Movie: A Dog’s Purpose By Christina Hasiotis

Are you undecided as to which movie you should watch this

weekend? Why not choose to watch A DOG’S PURPOSE. This

movie starts out in the country with a boy named Ethan and his

dog Bailey. Ethan has his dog until he goes to college and that is

when Bailey dies. The twist to this movie, is that Bailey keeps

getting reincarnated and keeps coming back to life as different

dogs. In one part of the movie, Bailey tries to help an officer

save a girl, and another time, Bailey even comes back as a girl

dog! By the end of the movie, Ethan owns a new dog. A dog that

is a different breed and a very different dog from Bailey. You

will just have to watch the movie to see how everything comes

full circle.

The main actors are Dennis Quaid and Peggy Lipton. Josh Gad

is the voice of Bailey and actually the voice of every dog in this

film. The actors and actresses did a great job, even when some

of the parts were sad. The theme of the movie is love and it is

rated PG-13. I really enjoyed A Dog’s Purpose and I think you

will too. It has already made $189 million dollars worldwide. I

rate this movie:

Sports Sports Fun Facts by Caden Rogovich

I think we can all agree that there are some crazy sports

fans out there that wonder about the most trivial things. I

have some interesting, yet useless facts about those trivial

inquiries.

Did you know there are 108 stitches on a baseball. The

first and last stitches are hidden. There is 88’’ of red thread

per ball. Also, each ball is wiped down in mud from an

undisclosed location on the Delaware River! In football

there are only 8 laces on a ball. In the old days golf balls

used to be made from dried cow eyes! And in soccer there

are 32 panels on a traditional soccer ball, one for each

country in Europe. The hoop in the NBA has an 18’’

diameter and the rim is 10 feet above the floor. Hockey

pucks have 3’’ diameters and are frozen before each game.

Also the average NHL game uses 12 pucks! So now you

know some sports fun facts. Make sure you hang onto them.

They could come in handy some day!

I Bet You Didn’t Know… By: John Carbone, Caden Rogovich and Ryan Fariole

LeBron James: He used to play football, but his career ended

because of a broken wrist.

Eli Manning: His actual birth name is Elisha Nelson Manning

Jason Varitek: He’s the only person to play in the Little

League World Series, the College World Series, MLB’s World

Series and the Olympics and the World Baseball Classic. Now

that’s a talented player!

Jordan Spieth: Became the youngest man in 82 years to win a

PGA Tour event. He is 25 years old and worth $70,000,000

Rocky Marciano: Professional Boxer who competed from 1947

to 1955. He had a 87.75 knockout win percentage. It remains

one of the highest heavyweight boxing percentages in boxing

history.

Bruin’s Bruce Cassidy by John Carbone

On February 7, 2017, Bruce Cassidy became the Bruins

interim head coach, and on April 26, the Bruins named him

head coach.

Here are some facts about Bruce Cassidy!

• Bruce was born on May 20,1965, in Ottawa, Ontario.

• Bruce used to be an assistant coach for the Chicago

Blackhawks.

• He also coached about six minor league teams.

• He currently resides in Providence, RI, with his wife and

two children, but will be moving to Winchester, MA this

summer.

He is excited to start the next season being head coach for the

Bruins and we wish him luck!

Profile: LaMelo Ball By Richard Indresano

LaMelo Ball. Have you heard of him? If you haven’t, you will!

He is a very talented high school sophomore who is burning up

the basketball courts out west. His basketball league is the

California Interscholastic Federation. He lives in Chino Hills,

CA, with his two brothers, and his parents Tina Ball and Lavar

Ball. LaMelo was born on August 22,2001, which makes him 16

years old. He is a point guard standing at 6’3”. He has already

committed to UCLA. LaMelo is one of the greatest high school

basketball players ever to play the sport. LaMelo, alone, has

scored 92 points in one game and makes incredible shots, one of

which he took from half-court. The ball went in! You can find

this incredible shot on YouTube. It’s called - LaMelo Ball scores

92 points highlights. LaMelo has a great future ahead of him.

Salary Comparisons by Matthew Cushing

Salaries are different depending on which sports you play. For

example, the highest paid hockey player, Jonathon Toews gets

paid $10,500,000 a year, but Eli Manning, an all- star football

player, will receive an annual salary of about $24,200,000.

Strangely enough, Lebron James, an all- star basketball

player, will get paid $30,963,450 which is $6,763,450 more

than Eli Manning. Also Clayton Kershaw, a pitcher for the LA

Dodgers, brings home $35,571,428. He is the highest paid

professional in national sports so far. Football (retired?)

quarterback, Tony Romo, who was released by the Cowboys in

April, will still receive $ 19,600,000 to not play! Baseball

pitcher David Price is getting paid $30,000,000. Professional

soccer players in Europe also make a pretty penny as well. No

wonder so many young boys’ dreams is to become a

professional athlete.

Parent Photo Sharing: Should Kids Have a Say? By Robert Shea

In this day and age, cameras are everywhere. Cameras can be

found at street corners, in stores and restaurants, and most

commonly, in the pockets of many kids and adults. Wherever you

are, smartphones can capture a moment. So, when a kid is

doing something “totally adorable”, his/her parents are sure to

take a picture.

A proud parent may want to share their snapshot of their child

doing something amazing or cute. But, is that the right

choice? The child in the photo may not want it to be shared, and

seen by all of their parent’s Facebook friends. The recipients of the

picture may be a parent of a friend. If the kid’s friend sees it, they

might mock the child in the photo. They may even show it to

others, or tell other kids about it. This might be extremely

embarrassing for the child.

I think that parents shouldn’t share pictures of their kids without

consent. A parent doesn’t know the potential consequences of

sharing pictures of their kids. If something upsetting ends up

happening, the kids will be mad at their parent for embarrassing

them. Some may say that parents have every right to post

photographs of their kids. But, why would a parent want to put

their child in a potential embarrasing situation? While it is their

own picture, everybody can determine if they want to be seen by

others or not. Even if they are proud of their son or daughter, they

should put their child’s feelings first, and ask before sharing.

Just Do It By: Angelina Micieli

Is moaning and groaning wasting your afternoons? Let’s face it,

no one likes to do homework, but if you waste time complaining

about your homework, the time to complete it will be longer. You

will have less time to watch TV or go outside, due to your

protesting. It’s more constructive to just do your homework

instead of complaining about it. Instead of trying to finish all

your homework in class, just do it at home without complaining.

Homework helps you achieve better grades and it reinforces the

material taught in school. Students might think complaining to

the teacher will get them less homework, but quite often, the

opposite occurs. Some teachers will assign even more work due to

the classes’ protests. I don’t think complaining is really worth the

effort. So, stop complaining and just do it!

To Spin or Not to Spin, That is the Question By: Kaitlyn Lehman and Charlene Nansubuga

Fidget products- help or hinder?

Fidget spinners have now become the latest fad. The

question is, are they a help or a hindrance? Fidget

products are being advertised to help children stay

focused in the classroom. But for many students and

teachers, fidget spinners have become a distraction.

Students are using them as a toy, rather than a tool

which helps kids stay focused or to help with anxiety.

Some people just need something to keep their hands

busy. According to a recent Time magazine article,

Sean Gregory wrote,

“Researchers suspect that movement (fidgeting) helps

kids maintain alertness during cognitive tasks.” It

appears that a little movement can actually be good!

We feel with the fidget spinners, the students are

more focused on the spinners spinning, rather than

the work that is in front of them.

According to npr.org, many teachers have decided to

ban fidget spinners due to their distraction. Also on

npr.org, some reviews are adding that some kids have

let it go airborne from their hands. That’s just an

accident waiting to happen! And recently, there has

been quite a few stories about children swallowing

the bearings from the spinners, and even swallowing

the entire spinner.

We feel that these spinners are spinning out of

control! These toys are dangerous! They are supposed

to be used as focusing tools, but now they are simply

a distraction. We asked our Newspaper Moderators

their opinions. Mrs. Bernard’s direct quote was, “ Not

a fan”. Mrs Scoppettuolo’s states, “ I can truthfully

say that fidget spinners help children focus.

Unfortunately, their focus is on spinning!”

This device may help some students, but may also be

a distraction to others.

What’s Up With That? By: Arianna Shalhoub

Have you ever wondered about what those little, creepy

“landmarks” are around OLA? Here are some of our favorite,

“What’s Up With That”! What’s Up With…

The Unclimbable Ladder

Located on the stairwell on the second floor; the unclimbable

ladder is just out of reach for anyone to climb.

What’s up with that?

2. The Tiny Lockers on the second floor

Are these lockers for the little ones? No one knows the purpose

of the little storage compartments outside Mr. Jorge’s room.

What”s up with that?

3. The 7A Science Experiment That Didn’t Go As

Planned

There seems to be a gray stain on the ceiling of 7A. What did

Ms. Oliver do this time?

What’s up with that?

4. The Strange Box

There is such a strange, little cable box on the second floor.

What’s up with that?

5. Sewer Thing?

An odd sewer-looking object sits in the ground outside the right

side of the school. Why is it locked?

What’s up with that?

6. The Mysterious Room

There is a sketchy door leading to a set of stairs as you enter

the side door of the St. Francis Center.

What’s up with that?

7. The Leprechaun Shower

Inside the janitor’s closet in the St. Francis Center, you’ll find a

tiny, green shower. Was it built for leprechauns or fairies?

What’s up with that?

8. The Little Door

A tiny door is located in the stairwell of the St. Francis Center.

(Maybe that’s where the leprechauns live.)

What’s up with that?

Where do they go after OLA?

Is Paper Disappearing?

By: Ryan G. Fariole

When people first wanted to read something, they

would read it on paper. There were no other choices.

Nowadays, many people read on electronic devices.

Personally, for me, reading on paper is still the way to go.

I like to open my front door on a Sunday morning, pick

up the newspaper, hold it up to my face and inhale.

Ahhh... the smell of the Sunday paper. I sit with my

family at the kitchen table and divide up the articles we

each want to read. I also like collecting books and

creating a library in my room.

Paper never runs out of battery, freezes mid page, or

loses internet connection. I understand why some people

feel otherwise. Electronic devices are better for the

environment, and trees are saved when you read on such

a device. Also some electronic devices are portable, so you

can read or see anything you like, anywhere and anytime

you like. I can see and understand both sides. But to me,

nothing can replace holding a newspaper with the ink still

on my fingers, as I laugh out loud reading the comics.

How to Make Guacamole Dip By: Charlene Nansubuga

Guacamole is a delicious Spanish dip. Guacamole can be

used as an appetizer, a dip, or even as a delicious party food.

Here is my way to make this special dip:

Needed:

2 avocados

3 tomatoes

1 lime

1 onion

½ tablespoon of pepper and salt

Steps of preparation:

First slice the 2 avocados into little pieces (take out pits).

Put the avocados into a bowl. Next, slice the lime in half,

and squeeze it onto the avocados and mix. When you’re done

mixing, slice the tomatoes and onions into tiny pieces. Then

add them to the avocado and lime mixture. Stir. Mix in half

a tablespoon of salt and pepper. Serve with tortilla chips

and enjoy!

Going to go my own way,

not going to listen to what others say,

making my own choices

not trying to lose focus.

People think I’m different,

but I’m just minding my own business.

As the world keeps growing,

I’ll keep going.

Spring Has Sprung By: Julia Maliawco Grade 1

The sun is out and flowers will bloom.

I can run in the grass with the butterflies soon.

For spring has sprung, I’m happy to say.

I love these days to go outside and play.

The Kitty That Likes To Play By: Sophia Rizzo

Grade 1

The kitty likes to relax all day.

Then she likes to play, play, play.

She likes to play with all her toys,

but it makes a lot of noise.

Then she likes to relax again!

Purr, Purr, Purr!

She sleeps all night,

until she sees the sun is bright.

Then the kitty relaxes all day long.

Untitled By: Katie Dunn

Grade 7

On a cold wooden table lays a small candle

shining and sparkling the flame fills the air.

The midnight scent is everywhere.

Its burning wax is white and pure.

The candle’s light is strong for sure.

As day turns to night,

the lit flame is not as bright.

The candle will burn.

The tables will turn.

On a cold wooden table lays a small empty glass.

Music By: Shelby Geaney

Grade 7

A guitar on the bed, keyboard by the window,

Ukulele on the wall and drums by the door.

Singing in the living room and sheet music to know,

Picks and strings and tuners we have stored.

With notes we find hope, in melody, tranquility.

A speaker with classics will connect the spirits of many.

In music those down will have the ability.

To improve the lives of others bringing happiness plenty.

Sounds to be played forever written down on paper.

The variety and relatability bring meaning to a bad day.

Every song has a message and a new enjoyable flavor.

Music is the meaning of happiness to me.
