A Year in the Life
June 1996-June 1997
Above: For the first time since the 1993 Gulf War, the American military took action against Iraq and
its leader Saddam Hussein. Iraq sent its troops into the Kurdish enclave in northern Iraq and
in
retaliation,
the United States launched air attacks against Hussein's southern air defenses. Hussein has abused his
people since the ruling Baath party assumed power nearly 30 years ago. And since the end of he Gulf
War he has continued
to
assassinate his political enemies.
Right: Boris Yeltsin was re-elected
President of Ru ssia and pledged to
continue the reforms he began five
years ago. However, the 65-year-old
president began immediately to show
the signs of severe heart problems.
It
was announced that he had at least two
heart attacks in the pa
st
two years and
open-heart surgery, considered the only
solution
to
his life-threatening disease,
was performed. He recovered from the
surgery and quickly returned to his
duties
as
President.
2 Year-In-Review
Right: Peace in the Middle East remained unstable as the school year began. A crisis
erupted after Israel opened a new exit
to
a tunnel alongside a plateau, raising suspicions
among Muslims
th
at
th
e Israelis were seeking
to
change the delicate religious balance of
Jerusalem's Old City. The incident proved
to
be the breaking point n mounting Palestinian
frustrations with the lack of movement in carrying out peace accords.
Demonsraons
followed in which nearly 100 people were killed. Then emergency meetings were arranged
by President Clinton in Washington between Benjamin Netanyahu and Yasir Arafat.
Right: Olympic gold Medalist Michael
Johnson has what track coaches call
speed endurance -
th
e ability
to
carry
top speed. He proved
he had endurance
plus. Johnson won an unprecedented
double win at the Summer Olympics in
Atlanta. He won the 200 and 400 meter
races. Johnson's performance was
equaled by many other athletes from the
United States at the Games, including
the women's gymnastic team, which
clinched a gold medal with a vault by
Kerri Strug, who performed with a bad
ankle. The Olympics were not without
tragedy, though,
as
a deadly pipe bomb
exploded in Centennial Olympic Park,
injuring more than 100 people .
Left: Months after TWA Flight 800 exploded midair in th
of 1996, investigators were still searching for a cause. T
747 jumbo et plunged into the Atlantic Ocean just off th
Long Island, minutes after taking off from Kennedy A
Paris. All 230 people on board were killed. The crash see
off
a series of n-flight disasters, including a number
of
oth
and mid-air hostage situations.

The Senior Prom was held at the Bethesda Hyatt on May 16, 1997. The theme of the evening,
Unchained Melody, by the Righteous Brothers was complemented by a song composed by
Azal Kahn. Azal's song, which he played on the hotel' s grand piano had been written espe-
cially for the evening. In addition, there was a DJ, who played songs that the Senior class
had requested in the weeks before the dance.
The Senior Prom was a moment the entire class had anticipated since the beginning of
April, an evening that would signal the beginning
of
their graduation process, but also would
signify their entrance into adulthood. Donning tuxedos and formal dresses, the class prepared
themselves for what was supposed to be the most exciting evening
of
their high school lives.
Commented one Senior, '' I was sad to see it end, it was a really fun evening.'' Those thoughts
were shared by everyone who attended the dance.

As the Class of 1997 processed into

Steve Howes did a great job coaching the boys J.V. basketball
team this year. The boys' overall record was sixteen wins and ten
losses. One of the best qualities of the team this year was its strong
finish. They won five out of the last six games they played at the
end of he season. The captains were Dwayne George, Kevin Wes-

of
main players is Vince

LACROSSE:
EXPERIENCING SUCCESS
The 1997 Varsity Women's Lacrosse team
played an outstanding season this spring, fin-
ishing with a strong second place in he WCAC
championship against Holy Cross. Th e team
experienced success throughout the entire sea-

12-5-0. The girls came out strong and well
experienced from the start with half a team
of
senior players: Elizabeth Bates, Natalie
Branagan, Karen Collins, Emily Deye,Maggie
Gessner, Casey Hewitt, Katie HoUand, Jenna
Miller, Jen Nail, Katie Prangley, Allison
Seery, and Chrissy Sindall. With theseyears
of experience combined with leadership, hard
work, and friendship, the senior girls were able
to pull the team together and help the team
remain focused on working towards a winning
season and a season that promoted the team 's
motto,"Have fun " Next year the team will
be
at a loss in losing so many skilled players and
starters, however, many talented underclass-
men will remain on the team along with those
moving up from JV who look for yet another

Boys J.V. Baseball
Success isn' t always defined by who won the most games or who had the most hits. This year's J.V. Baseball team discovered this as
their successful season came to a close. They may not have won all
of
their games, but they learned to play as a team, and worked on
improving their individual skills. Led by Coach Pat Messett, and captains Kevin Messett, Matt Sahadi, and Rob Robinson, these
fourteen sophomores and three freshmen grew as a team. No matter what position they were playing, or whether they were keeping
the spirits high
in
the dug-out, these young men learned the true meaning
of
success.
These guys give new meaning to the words '
'being
on
the
mound."
Whether or not they won, the team
still managed to have lots of fun.
Here comes the baseball team from its victory.
For
the

team, it was all about teamwork.

This year the sophomore class entered school with a new spirit. No longer the newcomers not knowing what to
expect from high school, they began their year with confiden
ce
and pride in their class. Throughout the year, their
sense of community grew, as could be seen in their tremendous showing during Spirit Week and at Pep Rallies.
They experienced a year
of
growth; academically and athletically, as they strived to achieve their very best, as well
as spiritually, as they experienced their first away from school retreat.
Jennifer O'Neill poses with the Falcon. Both showed a great deal of school spirit this year.
