History
• Historically, gonorrhea was long misunderstood and seen as a something of a mysterious disease.
• The popular English name of gonorrhea has been "the clap." The root history of the term gonorrhea come from the Greek words "gono," meaning "seed" and "rrhea," meaning "to flow." This can be attributed to the flow of discharge from the penis caused by gonorrhea in men. The slang term for gonorrhea, the clap, has several unique histories. One suggests that when men or women urinate, there is a clapping sensation that suddenly stings the genitals. Another etymology suggests that a technique to remove the puss from the male's penis was to vigorously clap the penis on both sides in an attempt to remove puss from the urethra.

The first truly successful treatment for gonorrhea came in the beginning of the twentieth century with the use of penicillin. From the 1970s until just recently, other combinations of antibiotics have very successfully cured gonorrhea if treatment was appropriate and symptoms were discovered early. Gonorrhea is now becoming more difficult to treat.
Gonorrhea can be passed from mother to her baby during delivery
If left untreated gonorrhea can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and may also cause arthritis
