The Year of Grace

May 5, 2019

Third Sunday of Easter, Year C

Chúa Nhật Phục Sinh III, Năm C

‘Gone Fishing’

In today’s gospel account, from St. John, Peter and his companions decide to go fishing. As night approaches, the optimal time for fishing on the Sea of Galilee, the men jump into a boat and put out into the lake. After a night of toil they catch nothing. As the sun rises the disciples return to shore. Before touching land Jesus asks them if they’ve caught anything. Upon their negative response He directs them to cast a net over right side of the boat. The men are astounded at the great number of fish caught up in the net. On this, the third occasion of Jesus’ appearance after His resurrection, the disciples are no longer behind locked doors in Jerusalem. Rather, they have returned to Galilee and presumably to their former way of life as fisherman. It would seem that Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection had little effect on these men.

From Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday we have visited The Way of the Cross. We’ve imposed discipline upon ourselves during Lent. We’ve prayed, fasted and took up almsgiving. We’ve endeavored to become more Christ like. Hopefully through our spiritual practices and by God’s grace that has happened. Now the question, “What about us?” After a season of discipline and spending time with the Lord; after His appearance to us on Easter Sunday, what do we do now?

As Peter and his companions return to their former occupation as fisherman they are vividly reminded that without Jesus, they can do nothing. Here are professional fisherman, with years of experience fishing the waters of Galilee, spending a night on the lake and catching nothing. At Jesus’ command their net is filled.

Fortunately the disciples’ return to their former occupation was short lived. As we know Peter and his companions will take up the great commission and go into the world to make disciples of all the nations. After all, during His ministry on earth, Jesus told His disciples they would become fishers of men; and so it was.

Are we going to return to our former lives, the way we were before the season of Lent started? Will we forfeit the gains we’ve made in the spiritual life and the graces God has bestowed on us? Are we going to be content with our former selves? Like Peter and his companions, Jesus calls us to be ‘fishers of men.’ We too must put out into the deep water, cast the net over the right side of the boat and bring to Christ those He wants caught in our net. Cast the net. Unleash the Gospel. Bring men to Christ.

Jim Caviezel gave what may be the greatest Catholic address of the 21st century

J-P Mauro | Mar 20, 2019 The famed actor of 'The Passion of the Christ' called for the next generation to “send Lucifer

straight back to hell.” Jim Caviezel was preparing for the release of his latest faith-themed film, Paul, Apostle of Christ — which was released last spring — in which he plays Luke the Evangelist. As is fitting for the biggest star attached to a picture, he went to FOCUS’ leadership summit (SLS conference) to promote the feature film. The college students were perhaps expecting a speech about the new film, but what they got was a phenomenal call to action that sent shivers down our spines.

The crowd was thrilled to see Caviezel’s kindly, bearded face, to such an extent that it did not seem they would ever calm down. He gently raised a finger and the room became still enough to hear a pin drop. Then Caviezel began, speaking softly and reading from his prepared speech a little clumsily: “The name Saul means ‘Great One.’ The name Paul means ‘little one.’ While making this film I learned that changing one little, tiny letter that we can become great in the eyes of God. But it requires us to be little if we wish to be great. This is the way of the saints. This is the way of the Holy and this is the way Saul became St. Paul.”

He continued speaking of vocations and how one must open up to discern such a calling. He spoke of how he knew he wanted to be an actor, the stressful time of his role as Edmond Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo, as well as the sacrifices he made during his time playing Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. He said: “When I was up there on the Cross, I learned that in His suffering was our redemption. Remember the servant is no greater than the master. Each of us must carry our own cross. There is a price for our faith, for our freedoms. I have been literally scourged, hit by the whips, crucified, struck by lightning, yes, open heart surgery — that’s what happens after five and a half months of hypothermia.”

He recounted a moment during the filming of The Passion, when he was wedged under the cross and someone else pulled it the wrong way, causing his shoulder to become dislocated. He said this footage remains in the final cut of the film and commented that had the production taken place in a studio, we might never have seen such an authentic perfor-mance. “The suffering made my performance, just as it makes our lives.” “There was a lot of pain and suffering before the resurrection and your path will be no different. So embrace your cross and race towards your goal. I want you to go out into this pagan world and shamelessly profess your faith in public. The world needs proud warriors, animated by their faith. Warriors like St. Paul and St. Luke who risk their names and reputations to take their faith, their love for Jesus into the world.”

He spoke about democracy and how the freedom to do what you want is not the same as the freedom to do what you aught. He quoted Maximilian Kolbe’s famous phrase, “Indifference is the greatest sin of the 20th century,” to which he added, “Well, my brothers and sisters, it is the greatest sin of the 21st century as well.” He brought the whole speech together by quoting the famed pre-battle speech from Braveheart in which William Wal-lace pumps up his army by speaking of freedom and what one must be willing to do for it. He broke from the quote, speaking with conviction and leaving aside his prepared speech, saying : “Every man dies. Not every man truly lives. You, you, you. We all must fight for that authentic freedom and live my friends. By God, we must live! And with the Holy Spirit as your shield and Christ as your sword, may you join St. Mi-chael and all the angels in sending Lucifer and all his henchmen straight back to hell where they belong!”

It is interesting to watch the change in Caviezel when he switches between his scripted speech and spontaneous remarks. As if to visually illustrate the difference between the “Great One” and the “Little One,” once his moment of commanding presence is over, he leans back over the podium and gives a sheepish smile as he messes up the last bit of his prepared words.

Words on the Word May 5, 2019 – Stay the Course

Two millennia have passed since Jesus died, rose and sent forth the apostles with their great commission to spread the gospel. They did so at their own peril, as we hear in the drama!c story recount-ed in today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. “When the captain and the court officers had brought the apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin, the high priest ques!oned them,” the reading begins. “’We gave you strict orders, did we not, to stop teaching in that name? Yet you have filled Jeru-salem with your teaching and want to bring this man’s blood upon us.’” As the reading reminds us, Peter and the apostles stay the course and double down on the importance of their ministry, driven by the urgency of the gospel and its saving power. “So they le$ the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.” All these years later, we presumably stand in a different !me, place and mindset. But a recent story in The Washington Times reported that violence against Chris!ans has been escala!ng in recent years, most notably in the bombing a&acks that killed several hundred people in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday. Indeed, the story went on to cite a report by a watchdog group no!ng “violent a&acks on the faithful doubled from 2017 to 2018, with approximately 11 Chris!ans dying every day for their faith.” Such a reality seems so unlikely in these modern !mes. But we’re reminded it is all too real, especially for those in certain parts of the world. And so we pray for them – and for ourselves and all our Chris!an brothers and sisters – that they, and us, like the apostles, may remain steadfast in our faith, driven by the profound reality that transcends all else – the reality of the resurrec!on!

National Catholic Prayer Breakfast Hears Call for 'Catholic Great Awakening' White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney assured the audience of the president’s personal

commitment to protecting the unborn. Christine Rousselle/CAN Apr. 23, 2019 WASHINGTON - National Catholic Prayer Breakfast heard an uncompromising call to holiness and the de-fense of every human life Tuesday, with speakers calling for a “Catholic great awakening.” A total of 1,400 gathered in Washington, DC for the 15th-annual prayer breakfast, where keynotes were deliv-ered by Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix and Curtis Martin, founder and director of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. Leading attendees in the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Sr. Bethany Madonna, S.V., vocations director for the Sisters of Life, told the nation’s assembled Catholic leaders to be undaunted by their own failings and limitations. Christ “loves you, and wants your weakness,” she said. Cont. pg. 5

New Hymnals and Bookplate Project I thank all who have either donated money to defray the costs of the hymnals, and those who have purchased bookplates as either gifts or memorials. The bookplates will be a more permanent remembrance of a loved one or the recognition of a gift given by a parish family. To date, there have been a little over 100 bookplates reserved. The bookplate project will continue as there are approximately 200 more opportunities to honor and remember loved ones. If you wish to purchase a bookplate, please complete the form below and return it with $22 per bookplate to the parish office. Fr. Hoang

Cont. fm pg. 4 “You can be strong with his strength,” she told the audience, “and you will be able to endure the insults that come with defending every human life.” Pro-life activist Abby Johnson also addressed the crowd, urging them to work towards a society in which abor-tion was “unthinkable” and its legality became irrelevant. In his keynote address, FOCUS president Curtis Martin noted that human history was punctuated by periods of renewal, sparked by a return to God in a spirit of atonement. But instead of doom and gloom, he said, the coming generation of young Catholics has the potential to do great things. The current generation, he said, are “survivors by God’s design” having been born after abortion was legalized and are poised to “wake up” and “vanquish the devil in this generation.” The United States has experienced ebbs and flows in religious devotion before, and has seen two “great awakenings” among Protestants that resulted in renewed faith for believers. Perhaps, said Martin, this is what the Church in America needs. "Wouldn't it be a great time for a Catholic great awakening?" Also among the speakers to address the the pro-life cause was acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, who assured the audience of the president’s personal commitment to protecting the unborn. Trump was frequently criticized during the 2016 presidential campaign for his past statements in support of abortion. Since his election, the administration has made efforts to block state funding for abortion a consistent theme, reinforcing the Mexico City policy preventing U.S. from going to organizations which fund or promote abortion. Mulvaney told the crowd that uncompromisingly pro-life language in the 2019 State of the Union address was expanded at the president’s personal insistence. Trump used the speech to condemn the newly-passed Reproductive Health Act in New York, which widely expanded abortion access. He was also critical of efforts to pass a similar law in Virginia. According to Mulvaney, these comments were Trump’s own last-minute additions to the text, made by hand as he reviewed the final draft. Despite political battles and increased polarization in national political life, Mulvaney said that was “comfortable” serving in the Trump administration and with its priorities. “The principles of our [Catholic] faith are alive and well and well-respected in this administration and are driving many of our policies,” Mulvaney said.
