worth, and that the institutionsprofitting by them are deservingof all the subsidy gained in sucha manner.

But it cannot be denied thatthe merchants and storekeepersare the sufferers. People inclin-

ed to be charitable and to helpchurches or schools seem to ap-

prove of getting something back

If tho fairs dovoted themselvesto selling ice croam, tea, rum andllowors no harm would bo done.If thoy confined themselves tosmall variety performances, con-

certs, or other acrobatic feats,thoro would bo no growling. Buttho sale of all kind of articlesusoful for Christmas presents de-
