In 1999, the Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain State Park was named “One of the Top Ten You Can Play in North America” by Golf Magazine. In 2001, Golf Digest named it “One of the Top Ten Courses in Tennessee” and the course has been named by GOLFWEEK Magazine as the #1 Public Course in Tennessee for 2012 and for 2013. Today, The Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain is one of the most sought-after sites among the Jack Nicklaus designed Bear Trace courses in Tennessee. The 6,900-yard (gold tees), par 72 layout features a design that capitalizes on elevation changes as well as natural features such as flowing brooks and clustered, mature pines. As is typical in Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, there are many risk/reward opportunities for all levels of golfers.

Come play the Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Tims Ford, featuring Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways. The opening holes are a blend of links-style creations that gently roll across former pasture land, then gradually transition to wooded sites dominated by giant oak trees. In all, the Tims Ford reservoir is visible from some holes on the course and comes into play on several of the 18 holes, creating an excellent balance of challenge and playability. Situated on a peninsula surrounded by picturesque Tims Ford Lake, this visually compelling golf course has been described by one national publication as a “glittering newcomer…an intriguing 6,764 yard layout (gold tees) with several different looks.”

The second Bear Trace course to open, Harrison Bay is destined to become a true classic in this collection designed by Jack Nicklaus. Located approximately 20 minutes north of downtown Chattanooga, the Bear Trace at Harrison Bay is surrounded by both water and heavily-wooded land, making an ideal setting for the course. Referred to as “the best natural piece of land for a golf course,” the course features Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways lined with soaring pine and hardwood trees. Although water touches 12 fairways, there is more than sufficient room to play safely. Most greens are open in front, which makes the course more user-friendly for high-handicap players and allows run-up shots. Fairway and green side bunkers are designed in the traditional Nicklaus fashion and add notable character to the overall integrity of the course. Like other courses in the collection, the emphasis on playability is clearly evident.

The Tennessee Golf TrailThis is a collection of nine golf courses located at different Tennessee State Parks. We have six Traditional courses created in the 1960s and 1970s by several noted golf course architects. Three additional courses designed by Jack Nicklaus were added in the 2000s. All of the courses have a professional staff to bring about a truly great golfing experience at different Tennessee State Parks.

About the Bear TraceThe Bear Trace is a collection of three world class, 18-hole golf courses designed by JackNicklaus. The present Bear Trace lineup features challenging layouts at three select Tennessee locations. Each Bear Trace course provides golfers the opportunity to play championship golf at truly affordable rates.

Audubon InternationalAll of the courses in The Tennessee Golf Trail have achieved the designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary by Audubon International. They have taken positive steps to preserve and enhance wildlife habitat while protecting the integrity of their course’s land and water resources.

Groundwater Guardian Green SiteAll of our courses in The Tennessee Golf Trail have been recognized as Groundwater Guardian Green sites by The Groundwater Foundation. To earn this designation, our courses are actively protecting local water supplies by optimizing fertilizer applications, applying natural organic products when possible, and creating vegetative buffer areas around wetlands and shorelines.

With gently rolling hills and beautiful hardwoods throughout, the Montgomery Bell Golf Course is one of the hidden gems of Tennessee. Featuring Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways, this is a wonderful experience for golfers year-round. The property also features an abundance of wildlife such as deer, geese, and wild turkey. Each spring, Montgomery Bell is host to the Dogwood Classic, normally the opening event in the Tennessee tournament season. The clubhouse features a spacious veranda for a casual lunch or seats up to 100 for outings or events.

The Pickwick Landing State Park Golf Course is located close to the border of Mississippi and Alabama within the proximity of Pickwick Dam. The course was opened in May 1973 and is a favorite of the locals as well as destination golfers. Featuring Champion Bermuda greens and 419 Bermuda fairways, this course is almost always in championship condition and playable year-round, a great golf package destination.

Warriors’ Path Golf Course is an 18-hole course located on the shores of Fort Patrick Henry Lake and the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This course is one of the most popular in the Tennessee State Parks system. The par 72 course was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1972. It is along rolling countryside and has a scenic view of the lake from #5 tee. This course is a favorite of many golfers in the Tri-Cities area and also features a large practice facility complete with large teeing ground, practice green and practice bunker.

Henry Horton was the first state park golf course to be built in what would later become the Tennessee Golf Trail. Opened in the early 1960s, the Buford Ellington championship golf course at Henry Horton State Park is one of the finest courses in the state of Tennessee. This challenging course is heavily treed with hardwoods and measures 5,625 yards from the Forward tees and 7,060 yards from the Championship tees. The fairways are generous in width, the greens larger than average and four sets of tees are available to accommodate every skill level. The greens have been re-contoured and replaced with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda and have been extremely well received. A friendly staff is waiting to insure an enjoyable round of golf.

The Paris Landing State Park Golf Course is situated on the western shore of Kentucky Lake. The entire course is tree-lined, creating a feeling that you are the only one on the course, very rarely seeing another foursome. Several holes skirt Kentucky Lake, producing a natural balance of rolling land, trees, and water. Hole #12 is a 586-yard, par 5 with an elevated green overlooking Kentucky Lake and hole #4 is a downhill 186-yard par 3 with the water providing a scenic backdrop. The Paris Landing Golf Course is a great destination for year-round play. In 2017 the greens were re-contoured with the addition of Champion Bermuda which has been a great addition to an already good golf course.
