A QUARTERLY DIGEST OF MONKSTOWN GOLF CLUB NEWS Q4 2017 The par 3 sixth hole in Monkstown has been the sixth since 1908. For the best part of 70 years it was followed by the par 3 seventh over the road and some of us will remember, when caddying for parents, hoping they would make the 7 th green and we could then hand them the puDer and spoon or brassie for the drive on the 8 th and slink off for a lovely rest (and maybe a sneaky fag) under the solitude of the branches of the great oak tree. This wonderful par 3, designed by Alister MacKenzie, bunkered on both sides and framed by magnificent mature trees to the right and rear was described by Christy O’Connor as one of the best par 3s in the country. It is and will remain a challenging par 3 and as children we recall having to use a driver and now many decades later find ourselves sPll using the driver. Hurricane Ophelia has taken our trees and we are bereR. However, we also acknowledge that change is constant and must be embraced and we look forward to future course developments. The glorious sixth Who will dance with the wind now that you’re really gone. Who will catch the sun’s rays on the hot summer morn. Who will slow down the gust when it’s out of control. Who will dilute the air that’s toxic to my soul. Who will speak to the clouds about sending the rain. Who will shelter me from the storm and soothe my pain. Who will stand in the rain when others hide away. Who will provide a place for li<le birds to play. Who will catch my rain drops before they touch the ground. Who will keep luxuriant grass from turning brown. Who will fix this huge hole in the soil of my heart. Who will give me comfort now that we are apart. Gents Club: Thursday Nov 30 @ 6.15pm Joint Club: Thursday Nov 30 @ 7.30pm New Officers for 2018 The vice captains and vice president were announced at a funcPon in the club on 29 th October last. Vice Captain Men’s Club: Maurice McGrath Vice Captain Ladies Club: Carol Murphy Vice-President : Peter Langford Our Squirrels Peter Davies has recommenced feeding the squirrels following the summer break. Peter expects that they will consume over 10 kgs of feed during the winter months thus keeping them the healthiest in Munster. Course chairman re2res Our course officer John Byrne rePres from the management commiDee following six years of sterling service to the club. John will present his final report at the AGM but his plans for the coming winter programme have been upended by Ophelia. During his term John has overseen many changes including bunker closures, leylandi tree removal and hardwood tree planPng. We thank John for his energy and commitment to the club and we acknowledge, Ophelia notwithstanding, that he is handing the course over to his successor in excellent condiPon. With more Pme on his hands now, John will probably be a scratch golfer by next summer. Ophelia - the clean up We congratulate and thank our course staff for their energy and long hours in cleaning up aRer Ophelia. To hand back 18 holes to the members within one month of the storm is an extraordinary achievement and great credit to the strategy devised by Hilary Madden and MarPn Travers.
