Conference, whichincludes the Universityof Idaho, has played itsmen’s and women’stournaments at theOrleans Arena the lasttwo years, usuallystarting a couple daysafter the WCC event. The Pac-12 Conferencemen’s tournament will beheld at the MGM GrandGarden Arena the nextthree years, which willbring more basketballfans to town with time toexplore the golf scene.

BYU’s addition to theWCC last seasonprompted a change in thetournament format. TheCougars don’t play gameson Sundays, inserting anoff day into the schedulethat many GU fans spenton the links. Gonzaga’smen typically play in thelate-night (8:45-ish)semifinal and the 6 p.m.Monday title contest, giving fans anopportunity to squeezein 18 holes before findingtheir way to the OrleansArena for evening games.

“The first week ofMarch Madness isprobably the best weekof the year, I think everycourse down here willtell you that,” RhodesRanch Golf Club proShane Sanchez said.“Typically the weather issome of the best aroundand with March Madnesspeople come here fromall over the country to

watch basketball. And(Las Vegas) just got thePac-12 Tournament. Thewhole month is a goodmonth.”

We sampled three LasVegas courses with greenfees ranging between$28-$99, thanks in partto a group rate at acouple, and found eachone a pleasure fordistinct reasons. Comewith us on our 54-holetour.

Golfers strategize at 3rd hole at Rhodes Ranch.

GOLF 2012 – LAS VEGASPage 4 Friday, April 6, 2012 The Spokesman-Review

This well-manicured, TedRobinson-designed 18-hole layout hasa little bit of everything.

Located perhaps 10-15 minutes fromthe Las Vegas Strip, Rhodes Ranch hasa resort feel with generous fairwaysbordered by side hills that often steerwayward tee shots back toward theshort grass. Undulating greens andwell-positioned bunkers, characteristics of a Robinson design, and water that comes into play onseven holes require thoughtfulplacement of drives and approach

shots.“Playable, that’s the main thing we

hear from people,” Ranch Rhodes proShane Sanchez said. “Everybody lovesthe design, it’s consistently in goodshape and you’re going to see somepretty holes, but it’s not going to beatyou up.”

Winding through an 1,800-homedevelopment, Rhodes Ranch easilycould have fallen into a cookie-cutterdesign with each hole looking like thelast. That didn’t happen, however, asthe course offers a mixture ofrisk-reward holes, from drivablepar-4s (No. 11) to reachable-in-twopar-5s that punish faulty shots.

The par-3s leave a lastingimpression, particularly No. 3, whichcan be played from 107 to 227 yardsto a diagonally-shaped green guardedby a pond and a cleverly placedbunker on the right edge. There’s asmall bail-out area left of the green.Measuring 167 yards from the whitetees, finding the putting surface is arelief and making par is a chore. Wehad a couple 3s in our group and wepractically jogged to the next hole.

It’s an intimidating view from thetips with the first challenge clearingthe hazard and the next trying to holdthe ball on the putting surface afterhitting a low iron or hybrid.

No. 7 can stretch to 202 yards. Thegreens on the back-nine par-3s areframed by water and both are in theneighborhood of 200 yards from theback tees.

“We definitely have the best set ofpar-3s in town,” Sanchez said. “No. 3is 234 from the tips to the center. Ifthat pin is back right, it’s close to 250

yards.” No. 3 is generally considered

Rhodes Ranch’s signature hole, but the scenic 18th deservesconsideration. It’s 441 yards fromthe back tees and 376 from thewhite. Water slices through thefairway and collects long drivesand errant approaches. The pinwas tucked in the back leftcorner when we played, adding tothe degree of difficulty.

“It’s a really good finishinghole for the average golfer,”Sanchez said. “They’re probablylooking at a middle to low iron toan uphill green. It’s not easy.”

The front-side greens had about with disease last summer, but they’ve rebounded nicely.

About the only change sinceRhodes Ranch opened 15 yearsago is turf reduction. The course,

which entertains about 65,000rounds per year, was originallywall-to-wall grass but now haslarge cutouts that not only saveon the water bill but in manycases add to the test of aparticular hole.

“It’s in pretty amazingcondition when you think aboutthe number of rounds, carts anddivots,” Sanchez said.

The pro offered a few closingtips.

“We ask that people make sureto play the appropriate tees sothey enjoy it because it can beatyou up from the back tees,” hesaid. “On the greens, things havea tendency to break to the city. You’re kind of in a bowl in LasVegas so the subtle breaks have atendency to break toward TheStrip.”

The views at Sunrise Vistaare simply unmatched.

Belt a drive here and youjust might forget to watch theflight of the ball if your eye catchesthe Thunderbirds in formation inthe distance, an A-10 roaring downa nearby runway or an F-16banking against a cloudless sky.

“You can pretty much see almost all ofthe aircraft the Air Force has,” said SteveGriffith, director of golf at the 27-holemilitary course at Nellis Air Force Base.“They hold different exercises throughout

the year. There’s always planes taking offand landing almost every day.”

It’s a visual treat that causedphotographer/plane buff ChristopherAnderson and I to stop, listen and marvel asroughly 75 aircraft took flight during ourround from runways perhaps 1,500 yardsaway.

“We hear nothing but good things frompeople who play here,” Griffith said. “Theylove the planes and they love theatmosphere because you get pretty close. And they enjoy the course layout. There’s

some good par-4s, par-3s. We have somegood holes that are really challenging.”

The course is “semi-open” to the public,Griffith said, “but it’s not a place where youcan drive up and have public access.”Griffith suggests contacting the pro shopand putting your name on a list. Theprocess of becoming an authorized guestgenerally takes about a week.

Green fees are more than reasonable at$28; $40 with an electric cart. Sunrise Vistasees about 38,000 rounds a year.

Raptor. Eagle and Falcon are traditionallayouts – relatively flat, several dog-legs,plentiful trees and a couple of waterfeatures. Raptor is more links style withfewer trees and more mounding to shapethe fairways and greens.

“It changes things up a little bit for thosewho play here,” Griffith said.

At 3,588 yards from the blues, Falcon isthe longest of the three nines. From the tipsthe shortest par-3 is 202 yards, the shortestpar-4 is 404 and the shortest par-5 is 540.

There are a number of memorable holes.

Eagle No. 8 is only 135 yards from the backtees but obstacles include a rock wall andfront and back bunkers that consume shotsof inexact yardage. Falcon No. 3 is anotherscenic par-3, measuring 152 yards from thegold to 202 from the blue. It can be the big, bad Wolf, if you sochoose.

There isn’t a longer course in Nevadathan Wolf, which measures a whopping7,604 yards from the tips. Wolf is one ofthree Pete Dye-designed courses on theproperty owned by the Las Vegas Paiute

Tribe. There’s also Snow Mountain, which opened in 1995, followed by SunMountain in 1996. All three courses, located about 25 minutes northwest ofthe Las Vegas Strip, come with scenic360-degree views of the natural, rollinglandscape against a mountain-rangebackdrop.

“Sun Mountain is considered themost picturesque. It’s a kinder, gentler

Dye,” said Christie Shaw, director ofmarketing. “Snow Mountain has sevenwater features and we think 16, 17 and18 are some of the best finishing holes inLas Vegas. All three courses have reallydifferent designs.”

Wolf, which opened in 2001, isconsidered the signature course with itsendless bunkers (I stopped counting at15 traps on the par-5 third), elevation

changes and sheer length.“That (7,604 yards) is why a lot of

folks want to try it,” Shaw said.We played Wolf on a breezy, sunny

afternoon from the yellow tees and ithad ample distance at 6,483 yards, including four par-4s 410 yards orlonger.

Three of those long par-4s create

great closing stretches to bothnines. On the front, it begins withthe par-5 sixth that has a bunkerrunning 450 yards along the leftside before slicing across the frontof a shallow, slightly elevatedgreen.

No. 7 is 410 yards, but playsmuch longer because it’s uphill.Drives to the right will likely findone of five bunkers. Keep it in playoff the tee and the next shot isequally challenging: typically amiddle iron to an elevated green.

No. 8 is an interesting 170 yards(206 from the back tees). Miss rightand you won’t see your playingpartners for a while. Your ball willsettle in a waste bunker some 40

feet below the green. Good luckgetting that up-and-down. Thediagonally shaped green can sendshots that are slightly right andslightly short to a sandy restingspot.

Put a 3 on the scorecard at No. 8and your reward is … the uphill,dogleg-right 431-yard 9th. For once, there are no bunkers to worryabout on your tee shot – just agrass bunker along the right side.Bunkers protect a two-tiered green.

The back nine is equallychallenging. The first water featureshows up at No. 12, framing thepar-3's right side. The par-4 14thdog-legs hard right and your firstdecision is determining how muchdistance you want to try to shaveoff by challenging a waste area

along the right side. No. 15, a 138-yard par-3 with an

island green, is often the mostmemorable for first-timers, Shawsaid. “If somebody makes ahole-in-one we hear about it fordays.”

No. 18 is a classic, 428-yardfinishing hole. Water hugs the rightside before giving way to a greenguarded by several bunkers.

Asked what visitors tell her afterthey’ve played Wolf, Shaw said,“With a smile, ‘That was hard.’ ”

Asked her approach when sheplays Wolf, Shaw responded, “IfI’m feeling competitive I’ll push it,but I like the fact that because ofthe tee-box options I can decidewhat I’m up for. I don’t try to beatthe course; I try to play with it.”
