Skip and Deb Redden hosted the Halloween party. There were delicious chillies and costume prizes. Best couple of the night was Al Randal and Terry Archbold. NO ONE saw that coming!! Thank you Skip and Deb. Coffee night was hosted by Paul and Sheila Haller. What a relaxing way to spend time with our GoldWing friends to get to know each other better. Great nibbles and drinks. Thank you Sheila and Paul.

Next event is hors d'oeuvres at our house. 115 Gavey St. Belleville starting at 7 PM. This has 18 people signed up already. If you can join us (the more the merrier) bring one plate of hors d’oeuvres and the recipes to hand out. Dinner night is at East Side Mario's at Quinte Mall on November 28th. Do you see shopping involved? December 7th brings our annual Christmas party. Cocktails start at 6, dinner at7, dance at 8. Held at the 413 Wing. Tickets can still be bought through me until November 28th. Friday December 13th, we have dinner at the Thai House 230 Front Street Belleville at 5:30. Call me if you would like to join us. Copper Wire

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the

conclusion that "their" ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Brit's, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a

story published in the New York Times: "American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have concluded that

"their" ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British".

One week later, Canadian Dept. Of Mines and Resources in Newfoundland reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 feet

in NE Canada, Jack Lucknow, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Jack has therefore concluded

that 250 years ago, Canada had already gone wireless."

Just makes you bloody proud to be Canadian doesn’t it???

RIDER EDUCATORS:

RICHARD & VAL BUTTON

Richard and Val will begin submitting articles for our January Newsletter. In the meantime I have included the follow-ing article on: How to: Winterize Your Bikeby Michael Ross

Winter is fast approaching and if you live in a frigid climate it's time to store your bike for the season. In storing your bike for a few months over the winter, your main concern is to avoid corrosion while in storage and the goal is to have a bike that is ready to go when you are.

The most crucial areas in need of protection are the piston rings, cylinder walls, and valve seats. The enemy here is moisture, which can enter the engine from any of a number of places and cause serious damage. Since its not really practical to try and close up all of the possi-ble areas of entry, we will concentrate on moisture proofing instead.

The first step is to warm-up the engine. This drives off any moisture that may have accumulated already and it makes it easier to get a good coating of oil in each cylinder. Turn the bike off and remove the spark plugs. Then, using a turkey baster, suck up 25cc's of engine oil and squirt the oil into each plug hole. Turn the engine over by hand (put it in top gear and turn the rear wheel) with the plugs still out to coat the cylinder walls, piston rings and valve seats. Then replace the plugs and drain the existing crankcase oil.

Next, fill the crankcase with fresh oil. I suggest you retain the old filter and plan on dropping this oil come Spring, but if you decide to use this oil after the thaw, you will want to change the filter now. The hard part of prepping your bike is now done and you can breathe a little easier knowing that moisture will not rust the piston rings to the cylinder wall. I just over hauled an engine that had been left unattended for a year and the cylinder wall was so badly pitted with rust that it had to be bored out 1 mm before I got down to good metal. Likewise the valve seats were a mess and I had to replace the head.

But we aren't out of the woods yet.

The next step is to protect the inside of the fuel tank from rusting. Fill the tank to the top with fuel that has been treated with a fuel stabilizer. I have had good luck with a product called Sta-Bil, which you can get at any marine supply store, but any type will do. You also want to drain the float bowls by unscrewing the small screw on the carb float bowl. Any fuel left in the bowls for more than two months will turn into a jet-clogging sludge that will cost you a carb overhaul to remove. If you have a fuel injected bike then you can skip this step and move on to the next.

Because batteries self-discharge, it is necessary to keep it charged up when the bike is stored. The best way to care for your stored battery is to hook a Super Smart Battery Tender to it. The Battery Tender is one of the latest generation of "smart chargers." It will maintain the charge in your battery without any other attention from you for years. The battery can also be left in the bike. If the posts on your battery are corroded, now would be a good time to remove the battery bolts and clean them up. A little grease on the threads of the bolts will keep them corrosion free all season. Make sure you top off the electrolyte with water if your battery is not maintenance free.

Get the bike, the rear of the bike anyway, off the ground. If you're lucky and your bike has a centre stand, use it. Wipe all the bird doo-doo off and give the chrome the once over with a coat of polish to keep it from pitting. Wax the tank and squirt some rubber protector on the rubber parts to keep them from drying out. Make sure you wipe any smashed bugs off your fork tubes before you throw a tarp over the whole thing.

If you live where it gets really cold then you should make sure your coolant has enough anti-freeze in it to keep the system from freezing. It's easy to check the coolant with a hydrometer that is made specifically for this purpose. Bikes don't have freeze plugs like cars, and a cracked cylinder head is a very ugly sight indeed.

That's about it. If you live in an area where rodents will crawl up the tailpipe looking for a place to nest, there are rubber plugs available that you can buy to keep them out. They are made for dirt bikes, but will fit any street bike. Also, when you're ready to bring your bike out storage, you might consider changing the brake fluid. It can pick up water from the atmosphere and it's a good idea to change it annually any way.

If you have performed all of the above steps you can be sure that the bike you store for the winter will start and run perfectly come spring.

Mike Ross is a road racer, writer and instructor at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. His columns will be appearing in the Super-bike garage each month.

Blonde Men

One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his

sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he

shouted to me, 'What setting do I use on the washing machine?'

'It depends,' I replied. 'What does it say on your shirt?'

He yelled back, ' Toronto Argonauts !'

And they say blondes are dumb....

Well happy Movember, gongrats & good luck to anyone participating. Some of our members have had problems with colds & snuffles. We hope everyone is getting better. Sheila Haller seems to have recovered from her respiratory problems, however, she now has a broken toe; how she got it remains a secret or a lost moment. A big thank you goes out to Skip & Deb Redden for hosting the Halloween Party; what a fun time we had. The costumes were great, espe-cially the best couple...Terry Archbold & Al Randall. What happens at Halloween parties stays at Halloween parties!

Speaking of members who host parties etc., we appreciate it so much; if a home is needed please step up to the plate and volunteer.

Keep some fluturee plans on your calendar, perhaps a Friendship Weekend in February, a Labour Day trip to Vermont, and many more activities in between.

Take care everyone and stay well. Here is a recipe that was a hit at the Halloween party.

The Tennessee River has been winding its way through the Appalachian mountains for an incredible length of time. Canada has seen several ice ages come and go while this ancient river was slowly wearing its valley in the earth. Be-cause of this there are few rapids or falls, as most have been worn away by the relentless force of the water. Thus, when man first arrived in the area he found a natural high-way which awaited only the invention of boats. In the north we tend to regard water transport as an oddity or a hobby since the highway system has largely supplanted our few and rigorous river systems. Not so in the American south, however. From a ferry landing on the left bank of the Tennessee we let the Wing cool off for half an hour while we wait for the ferry barge to return from the far shore half a mile away. Since this is not on a main road there is only one boat and it can handle only about eight cars. A couple of German tourists get me to take their picture with their camera while we wait. With my own I get a close up of a derelict diesel engine with some kind of flowering vine growing through exposed cylinders. Then Doris directs my attention to an ap-proaching barge making its way toward us from around the downstream river bend. As it ponderously makes the turn I realize that the river is still an important means of commercial transport. That barge is almost a quarter of a mile in length, propelled by a single tug temporarily attached to its stern. I have lots of time to take pictures as it creeps by.

After all six cars are on board, the ferry man motions me into the remaining left-over space, and charges me a couple of dollars since I don't take up much space. We watch the muddy brown water swirl by as the ferry plods toward the opposite bank. My first impression of the rivers in the south was that they must be polluted, hence the murky brown colour. I have since learned that this is not the reason for the colour, rather that in the millennia since their courses have been established, all the swamps and lakes have filled up with waterborne sediment and are no longer available to provide filtration and settling ponds for the silt which is being eroded from upstream. The suspended particles remain in the water as the land is slowly being carried to the sea.

After a lunch break we head east along the north range of the Smokey Mountains and the temptation proves too much. Despite the fact that we should be heading home I cannot resist the call of a twisting mountain road. I am not sure where we are going but the next right turn takes us upward for the next half hour. Civilization is scarce here; small outposts with a general store and a gas pump serve the occasional camping area and small patch of farmland.

There must be some farming hereabouts, because we spend a good hour trying to pass a truckload of watermelons with-out success. There is no place for him to pull over and no place straight enough to pass. At last we find a major route bearing north and in a short time we are back in the rolling foothills making good time. Near Pigeon Forge we find a motel and stop early in order to have a leisurely supper and take in a movie. I am pleased to find that we have come a fair distance today, which surprises me until I remember that the scale of a state map is much larger than that of the map of Ontario. Distances are not as great as they seem at first. After the movie we cruise back to our motel in the cool night air while I watch for deer in the vine covered brush a few feet from the roadside. These critters make me nervous and I dislike night driving for this reason. The weather report calls for hot and humid tomorrow, (my favourite climate) and we turn in early in order to take ad-vantage of that magic couple of hours after sunrise.

RIDE SCHEDULE: AL RANDALL

All Members As this riding season comes to an end I would remind you that we need to start planning for next year. To help me develop the ride schedule it will be very helpful to get some suggestions for ride destina-tions. I will use these to match them with potential road captains or, if a volunteer steps forward, work with him to develop a suitable route if needed. Let us work together and make next year a banner year for Chapter Q on the road, which includes visiting other chapters. Al Randall
