LCF St udents bring Beautify to life!Now in its seventh year, Goldwell’s annual project with the London College of Fashion once again highlighted the fashion talent of the future
and gave an inspirational view of Goldwell’s key trend for 2013 - Beautify.
Goldwell challenged the FDA Hair and Makeup students to interpret Beautify as part of their final project. Working along-
side students from the School of Media and Communication, Hair and Makeup students had to create a visual interpretation including
photographic work and a short film showing the making of the project and their final vision.
The results are mesmerising. Six groups interpreted Beautify in a completely unique way, exploring the underlying meanings and
what Beautify means to them as creative individuals.

The UK Finalists were chosen by a judging panel of industry experts including Beverly C mbe, Mark Leeson, Karine Jackson, Ruth Hunsley(Hairdressers Journal), Amanda nottage (Creative HEAD), nicola Shannon (Professional Hairdresser) and nicky Pope (Tribute).

Global Color Zoom Creative Colourist 2010 winner, neil Barton, has experienced first-hand what winning can do for your hairdressing career. His salon, neil Barton Hairdressing based in Edinburgh has never been busier, and his own aspirations of international success are becoming reality.
Here, neil shares a snapshot of what life is like since winning Color Zoom.
Neil Barton – Travel DiaryChristmas Day After a wonderful Christmas Day with my family I set off on my travels to
Toronto, Canada to meet my friend Timothy Switzer. He’s Global Color Zoom Master for
Goldwell, Canadian Stylist of the Year, Colourist of the Year… you name it, he’s got the title!
I was really looking forward to working with him on a colour collection, and planned to have
a fun packed week working in his salon and prepping for a week in LA where I would be
recording five episodes for a series of webinars for Color Zoom 2013 …

Boxing Day It took a total of twenty hours to get from Edinburgh
to Dublin, Dublin to Chicago, then Chicago to Toronto. To make
matters worse, on arriving in Toronto I was pulled into a room and
asked hilarious questions about why I was there, and my whole
hairdressing kit was pulled out and investigated. Then after waiting
for an hour at the baggage reclaim I realised my luggage had gone
missing. Not a great start to my trip but I figured things could only
get better.
27th December Today was great! I had a long lie in for the first
time in months, and we had an amazing Christmas dinner with
friends, laughing about my interrogation the day before. It was good
to relax before the work really kicked off.
28th December It sounds crazy working through the holidays,
but I love learning and experiencing new things, so to me, this
chance to see how another salon in a different country worked was
invaluable, and I was thrilled that Timothy had booked my day full of
clients who were eagerly awaiting my Scottish charm! I picked up
some great tips on retail and management that I knew would work
well in my salon back home. I even managed to squeeze in a relax-
ing facial.
29th December Today we prepped eight models for tomorrow’s
shoot. We were doing a colour collection with very strong geometric
bob shapes using various concave undercutting techniques. We used
strong colour placements - beautiful coppers and fiery red shades
with turquoise and lighter shades, intense gold, greenish shades
and more turquoise. Using Goldwell Elumen and Topchic, we had
various colour formulas prepared. Turquoise was a common theme

throughout the collection against red, copper and warm tones, it
looked gorgeous. The styling was simple, it was all black but with
lots of different shiny textures, and we used a lilac backdrop so the
colours really popped out. It was great to work alongside my friend
Ivana, a talented Goldwell Freelance Educator from Serbia who now
has a salon of her own in Chicago.
Despite the fact the temperature outside was -10C with heavy snow
storms, every model turned up on time and we worked on to 10pm
until everyone’s hair had been cut and coloured, camera ready for
tomorrow. As well as collaborating, I also had two models of my own
so I worked on my own looks for these. For one, I went for a 1960s
inspired short crop with a concave hairline and a Liza Minnelli style
asymmetric fringe. It had deep violet ash roots with lightened ends, a
zigzag placement using a blend of intense violet, pink and turquoise
in each foil. I also did a shine line on the shorter side to give a harder
edge. My other model had very fine shoulder length hair so I thought
of creating a contrast of hard and soft textures. I lightened her ends
using Topchic HiBlonde 11G and darkened her roots with an Elumen
copper and red, and used golden beige blonde formula on her roots.
30th December Today we were up early setting up the salon for
the shoot. We were joined by Greg Swales, a young talented fashion
and hair photographer from Canada who I’d met in Paris and worked
with in Miami. There was also a stylist and makeup artist on hand to
get the models camera ready. What a great day – everyone worked
so hard and we got lots of different looks. After a manic day, we re-
warded ourselves with a fantastic meal and drinks. To top it off, I also
finally got my luggage back!
New Year’s Eve Today was a day to celebrate after a busy week
so we made an early start on the drinking! We celebrated New Year
in a Scottish pub with a Canadian man in a kilt blowing his bagpipes
and reciting poetry about long lost relatives in Scotland. We had a
few hours of fun there then went clubbing till the early hours of 2013.

New Year’s Day Today, with the hangover from hell, I had to
pack my luggage as I was heading to LA the next day. I made sure I
had clothes in my hand luggage this time as we were to start film-
ing as soon as I got off the plane at 2pm and I didn’t want to risk
another luggage loss. We spent hours making storyboards, endless
colour formulas and placements for this week’s shoot. It’s best to be
prepared as you never know what model you will get and what you
can do to her hair.
2nd January We were up at 4:30am to catch the 7:30am flight but
I was able to catch up on some much-needed sleep on the plane.
At 2pm we arrived at the Goldwell KMS studio in Santa Monica where
I met the amazing and hilarious John Moroney, Global Education
Manager for Goldwell and KMS, and the film crew who would be with
us for the next few days. We were filming a series of webinars for
Goldwell Color Zoom, passing on our advice on how to enter the
Color Zoom competition and how to get the most out of a photoshoot.
TimothySwitzer, Global Colour Master, Dimitrios Tsioumas, Global
Style Master and myself were each going to cut, colour and style a
model, showing everything from creating moodboards to producing
a final winning look. We held a casting in the studio and had a
great turn out - every model was up for a total restyle which made
things so much easier. In no time, I had five options and went for an
androgynous girl with shorter fine blonde hair. Although her hair
was fine in texture, she had enough of it for what I wanted to do and
most importantly she had a strong look with piercing turquoise eyes.
We put up our storyboards so we were ready to start prepping the
next day. At night we hit the shops in Santa Monica with the stylist to
get some extra pieces for the shoot.
3rd January The prepping continued - we stuck to our mood-
boards, got all the looks finished – the models looked amazing. We
were eager to crack on with it all the next day.
4th January Shoot day! We started early, got the models straight
into make up and prepped. Timothy was shooting his model first - he
cut a beautiful bob shape with lots of over hangs, and red, pink and
copper colours coming through, it was out of this world. I was up
next and it took some time choosing the right clothes for my model
as her hair was pastel violet and pink and I had to be careful that
the clothes enhanced the hair rather than dominated it. Up next was
Dimitrios’ model who had a dark bob shape with yellow and tur-
quoise and green - it looked amazing. After a long day we relaxed
with a few drinks and some nice food.
5th January Today I had a long lie in and breakfast in bed, pure luxury!
I treated myself to a shopping trip in Santa Monica and had a nice walk
along the beach beside the pier. Later on I went back to the Academy.
There I got to meet the North American Goldwell Artists and they
presented this year’s Beautify collection to the Educators from all over
America and Canada. My model from the shoot was also presented to
them and seeing her standing there I felt so proud of everything I had
achieved on my travels. It had been hard work but totally worth it.

Nicholas Oakwell Couture Autumn/Winter ‘13 Show
On Thursday 27th June, British couturier Nicholas Oakwell
invited Goldwell to be their official hair partner for the fourth
time, to launch his much anticipated Autumn/Winter 2013
Collection at Claridges. Head stylist was renowned session
artist James Rowe.
Once again the show took place in the iconic Claridges hotel, where the
audience were transported to the nocturnal rooftops of Paris thanks to a
spectacular set of chimneys, skylights and nostalgic horizons. An array
of stunning models dressed in sumptuous 30’s inspired couture with a
nod to 50’ silhouettes showcased this elegant and seductively Parisian
collection. Inspired by film noir, the romantic show was breath-taking.
Sam Bright and Rachael Kelly from Woo Hair & Beauty in Southend-
on-Sea assisted James Rowe as part of the backstage team, as did
Sarah Lawrence and India Flaherty from the Goldwell Education Team.
The hair look was elegant and soft to complement the clothes and
theme of the show. Hair was set using a modern take on the Marcel
Waving Technique and rolled into a loose bob shape, it was feminine,
romantic yet fashion forward. Prep started at 9.30am to ensure the
models were ready for the 5pm catwalk.
One model was cast as a feline-like character – draped in fur, diamonds
and luxurious fabrics – to reinforce the image of felinity and power
inspired by the nocturnal urban surrounds of Paris. Other fabrics
included silk, tulle, organza, chiffon and panne velvets, with embellish-
ments of seed beads and gold and silver metalwork.

Get the look Nicholas Oakwell CoutureStep 1 – Prep Apply StyleSign Power whip to damp hair for volume. Blow-dry using a round brush and nozzle attachment to create a sleek finish.
Step 2 – Making Waves Set the hair using the Marcel Waving Technique.
Step 3 – Braid Create a small braid at the nape of the neck as a base for pins when rolling the hair. Spritz with StyleSign Big Finish Spray.
Step 4 – Dressing Out To dress the hair, apply StyleSign Diamond Gloss for a glossy finish.
Step 5 – Shape Backcomb the underneath for volume and grip, smooth with bristle brush. Roll the hair underneath to create a loose “bob” shape. Pin in place.

Goldwell and KMS California have recently moved into a new home in Shaftesbury Avenue and are proud to introduce their stunning new Academy right in the heart of the capital.
The new Academy London is both an education hub in
the city and a hive of creative energy, hosting courses,
events and inspirational evenings. Situated at street
level in London’s buzzing theatre land, in easy access
of Leicester Square tube station.
The Academy London is spacious and contemporary
– industrial chic is combined with luxury – look up
and you see a cool concrete ceiling hung with over-
sized aircon pipes like a warehouse space, look down
and you see warm wood floors leading you to chic
backwashes, colour bar and salons.
There are three salon areas – two for Goldwell
Colour and Inspirational Courses and one for
KMS Cutting and Styling Courses – backing
onto a large open plan backwash area. There

Award winning hairdresser and British Hairdresser of the Year 2013 nominee, Mark Leeson, presented an intimate seminar at the new Academy London. The “evening with” event was attended by salon owners and hairdressers who wanted to gain an insight into Mark’s high-profile career and how he runs his hugely successful business.
With clothes from Louis vuitton’s S/S 2013 collection, a Great Gatsby soundtrack, gorgeous colour work, chic beehives and stylish waves the theme of the night was creating captivating photographic images.
The audience were treated to fabulous looks on five models, demonstrating the latest trends and techniques that Mark is working on both in the salon and on his photo shoots. Goldwell’s Head of Technical and Creative Direction, William Wilson, was the compére for the event, and took the opportunity to talk to Mark regarding his business, his team and his award-winning career.
Working with Goldwell’s wide portfolio of professional colour including Nectaya, Topchic and Elumen, Mark demonstrated how catwalk looks can be adapted into more commercial styles, and gave his interpreta-tions of the coolest trends right now.
Mark also did live colouring in the form of astunning fiery-copper, inspired by ChristinaHendricks, as well as dry cutting on a very directional icy blonde with pastel violetslices strategically placed for maximum impact. “Most of the colour that we are creating in the salon is personalised and multi-dimensional colour that can’t be created at home.”
The evening was packed with educational, enlightening tips and techniques to take back to the salon, “A lot of my inspiration comes from the younger staff in the salon. They know what’s happening in the night clubs and what trends are emerging, so they are a great,” said Mark.

Goldwell were the official hair sponsor for British fashion brand Whistles as they made their London Fashion Week debut at the beautiful Dover Street Arts Club in Mayfair.
The backstage team was supported by Goldwell’s Education Team and Zac Coldicutt from Colour Unique Salon in Newcastle. The team was led by renowned session stylist James Pecis.
The presentations showcased Whistles A/W 2013 collection, featuring luxe oversized knitwear, polished leather skirts and trousers, camouflage in rich jacquard and naval influenced pieces.
James Pecis created a hair look to compliment the collection; hair was parted on the side and worn loose with a natural, lightly tousled texture.
To create this look: Work StyleSign Power whip mousse through damp hair and rough dry. Part the hair to one side and clip the heavier front section so that it is flat to the forehead. Taking random sections, spritz with StyleSign Magic Finish hairspray and twist from root to tip, spritz again and let go. HAIR SALON OF THE YEAR NORTH EAST
Darlington-based Hobson & Holmes has been award-ed the ‘Hair Salon of the Year North East’ title at the prestigious English Hair and Beauty Awards 2013, just 5 years after the salon opened!
The awards are based on public nominations and cover 21 specialist categories celebrating the most talented hair and beauty professionals in the country.
Hobson & Holmes’ Director Nicholas Holmes said: “It’s amazing to be recognised by the English Hair and Beauty Awards. It’s great to feel that our ethos of affordable luxury with an emphasis on customer service is standing the test of time.”
ARROCCA TRAINING CENTRE WINS PRAISELocal business leaders, football legend Luther Blissett and MP David Norris joined forces in their support of a newly opened hairdressing training centre in Berkhamsted.
Arrocca Hairdressing Training is the brainchild of experienced hairdresser,Trisha Buller, who runs Ciente hair salon in High Street, Berkhamsted.Having spent over 30 years in the business, Trisha believes the time is now right to share her knowledge with those at the start of their careers. She says of the venture “The Arrocca team are incredibly dedicated and our training will focus on the traditional and fundamental skills of hairdressing and customer service. Hairdressing is an industry of which I am incredibly proud and I will do what I can to ensure it continues to enjoy a superb reputation.”

TOPCHIC ON TOURGoldwell took TOPCHIC on tour in April to inspire hairdressers in three cities around the UK. The Topchic Iconic tour travelled to Glasgow, Manchester and Cardiff and starred Goldwell Ambassadors, neil Barton and Lisa whiteman.
The tour, which travelled nationwide from 15th -17th April, was presented by Goldwell Creative and Tech-nical Director, William Wilson. Topchic was recently re-launched to the industry after being revolutionised with new technology and a brand new look – over 35 years after it first hit the professional market. As the core colour brand in Goldwell’s portfolio, Topchic is an Iconic brand for many professional colourists around the world.
