DESCRIPTION
Melbourne is one of the few true rock’n’roll capitols of the world. And Inpress magazine is the voice of this great rock’n’roll city. For over 20 years, Inpress has been covering every inch of the entertainment scene, profiling international performers and events and, most importantly, fostering Australian art and artists. Published and read by over 120,000 people weekly, Inpress is distributed in carefully targeted pubs, clubs, cafes, council offices, universities and stores throughout greater Melbourne, Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula and all major victorian regional centres. With a primary focus on the 18-30 demographic, Inpress specialises in contemporary popular music - rock, punk, metal and roots. In depth features, profiles and reviews by some of the country’s leading journalists, specialist columns (including industry news by nationally syndicated columnist Danielle Odonohue), and an exhaustive gig guide make for essential weekly reading for Melbourne’s youth.TRANSCRIPT

GOLDEN PLAINS NO.5
Welcome back? You can pick up where you left off. Or maybe just pick
up, if this is the fi rst time you have fl own with us.
This is Golden Plains No.5, and this year feels quite different to me.
It feels like the start of a new era. Can’t put that down to any one thing
but it’s there.
When the idea for Golden Plains was fi rst mooted we were careful not to
cram every available space with Stuff. We didn’t want it to come Ready
Made or Shop Bought, we wanted to leave room and space and time for
Things to evolve naturally. Space for You. The best bits of human nature
abhor a vacuum, and hence things Happen. Naturally. That’s part of
what a festival is – everyone is Part of it.
So over the past few years we’ve seen traditions spring up like The
Door, the animals, the red-haired fraternity’s 8pm get-together at the
Red Tree (is “Ranga Meet” not offensive?), and of course, the now-
celebrated Boot, which has leaked over to Meredith as well. Seems to
have also caught on big-time in Egypt.
Anyway, thankyou for Being Here. Gotta thank the traditional owners of
this land, the Wautherong people, who were here for about 25,000 years
before us. Long time.
Gotta thank the local community for so graciously hosting the festival,
and for actively participating in it. Did you know profi ts from the
Community Tucker Tent go to many local community organisations?
If you feed yourself from that excellent food outlet you’ll be helping
the local town and district with things like primary schools and sports
clubs.
Gotta thank the neighbours, especially the Cameron family and their
world-renowned Meredith Dairy. Bush Camp is Land for Wildlife and the
Camerons very kindly allow us to camp in there.
What’s new, GoldenCat?
The Rochester has proven to be a hit so far. It is located kinda behind
The Eye, and is a boutique establishment of thirty private canvas rooms.
You get a guaranteed prime campsite, reserved car space, mint on your
pillow, and an attentive Concierge.
The Gift Shoppe now stocks Meredith Supernatural Amphitheatre socks.
Footy-style socks with a cushion foot. There you go.
Show me the way to St Louis (via South Pines). Extensive campground
lighting in now installed: 4km of cables, countless lights and much
swearing have resulted in illumination by which you can fi nd your
way Home despite Darkness. Where appropriate the lights use
self-contained solar power.
If you get lost on the way, there are also now a dozen or so Helper
Huts in the campgrounds which house our enthusiastic and helpful
Helpers. The Helpers are there to Help you with just about anything
– directions to loos, food, etc, help you fi nd your tent, ponchos if it
rains, sunscreen, condoms, and to get the word out if someone in the
area needs assistance of some kind. Familiarise yourself with your local
Helper Hut before dark so you know where to go for 24 hour Help in the
campgrounds.
The Ecoplex Cinema has a new front door – you enter via Bush Camp.
The Cinema is in the same place, you just gotta go a little Deeper to
get In. Fort Knox.
The Keynote Speaker is the noted Futurist Dr Peter Ellyard, speaking
on the topic titled “Golden Plains 2050”. It will be nice to fi nd out
what we’ll all be doing in 39 years so tune in Sunday morning for the
answer(s).
Please help Keep Golden Plains Golden by cleaning up again this
year – last couple of years have been brilliant in that regard, though
“Dry Cleaning” remains misleading. Personally I’m hoping that Eye
Level by the Simon Park Orchestra is chosen as the Cleanup Song.
AS ALWAYS: TOTAL FIRE BAN: No matter how cold it gets: no fi res –
at all, day or night. Smokers extinguish your butts fully – grind and bin
or drown in dregs.
Also be aware there is usually a Booze and Drugs Bus on the way home
on the Monday. Be aware of that and Get Home Safely. Maybe get some
zzz’s and a meal in on Monday morning before you leave or designate
a cleanskin.
Loud music in the campgrounds has been banned for 2 seasons now.
If it’s loud enough to annoy, it’s too loud. Thankyou for your co-operation
here – please respect your neighbourhood.
Chairs, couches, coffee tables, bankers’ lamps, pouffes and credenzas
are always allowed in the Amphitheatre. However chairs or couches
that are elevated (raised) are not. If you are blocking the view of
people behind you it’s too tall. If you brought any furniture at all
PLEASE TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU. Otherwise on your way out PLEASE
drop it off at grid reference F7 to our hardworking volunteer waste team.
WELCOME TO
Everyone at Team GP would like to thank Natalie Mason (nee Crupi) for
a decade or so of uber-faithful service to Golden Plains and Meredith
and wish her all the best in her new career as the bowling coach of
the West Indies.
Now. Many of you will know who Chris Nolan is. He is the man who founded
Meredith Music Festival along with Greg Peele and Marcus Downie and
it’s his family farm on which we all stand here today. Well, his Mum Mary
is one of the better humans on the planet and was deservedly recognised
as such in the Australia Day Honours this year. Mary is now a Member
in the General Assembly of the Order of Australia. If you go up the back
of the Amphi to say hello to Chris remember you must curtsey to Mary
and address her only as “Ma’am” (she’ll be the one with the crown).
I think that’s about it. No.5’s here.
Thankyou very much for the pleasure of your company.
Now go get ‘em.
Aunty and the Supernatural Custodians
THANKS ALWAYS TO
Expanded Cinema – Stern, De Bruyn & MagenMoving sideways on a one way street! 3 titans of mindbending eye & ear insania deliver a featherweight punch to your mental undies. Or (how they say it) “three way audio-visual alchemical outdoor meltdown featuring noise cathexis, celluloid trauma and object-project(ion) transference.”… Most likely, another unrepeatable monsterpiece of live in-person & disinhibited art-ghetto freakdom. Happening both nights, these top humans and agents of mental enhancement are:
Joel Stern - composer and noise artist from Brisbane
working with cracked electronics, homemade
instruments and found sounds
Dirk de Bruyn - experimental fi lmmaker and performer
from Melbourne working with multiple 16mm projectors
and fl ashing lights
Anthony Magen - sound and image explorer from
Melbourne obsessed with the wonder of wander.
ECOPLEX CINEMA PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTSIN OPTICALLY ENHANCED ULTRAVISION!!!Only ULTRAVISION with SUPER-SONORAMA provides you that “you-are-in-the-middle-of-it-all” effect... Accept no substitutes! (not available in indoor hardtop-type cinemas - exclusive to the Meredith Ecoplex...)
We swim the sewers of cinema now-and-past, to salvage unfamiliar objects of wonder and delight. Join us at the Ecoplex as we celebrate both new and misremembered (and damn strange – of course) instruments of celluloid enchantment…Saturday night: 9pm till late Sunday night: 9pm till laterAnother garbage sandwich of cultural idiocy for your viewing (listening, also) delectation, with highlights:
Son of the White MareHorribly obscured epic of psychodelicious animation and a pinnacle moment of human creativity: youbetcha! Mostly unknown outside of Hungary, this lysergic longform cartoon adapts the SciFi folktales of central Europe for cavemen-and-women at the frontier of the multiverse. In spaceships. (dig on the stills, but wait till you see it move…)
Pictures of LightJourneying to frosted crystal wilderlands at the remote north of Canada, Peter Mettler provides an expert scrutiny of fellow travellers, colourful local residents, and the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights that is the goal of his expedition. This is a beautifully measured celluloid poem, perfectly matched to the soundtrack by Jim O’Rourke.
Plus: dreamscape Japanorama with twisted pop art embellishments; adventuring with motheaten toys against asthma; new styles in unhinged DIY housing (missile silo conversion, treetop condos); French punk’s fi nest hour; “how tv ruined your life”; misguided rubbish; etc etc
PLUS: (YES!) A WHOLE BUNCH ELSE!!!

Live music fi nishes at 6am on Monday, and after breakfast
and a late check-out, the gates close at 1pm - you can’t
stay Monday night. So with the time you may have on your
hands, instead of heading straight home to watch daytime
TV or recount your festival tales in chatrooms, why not
take in some of this fi ne district’s sights and attractions?
Don’t feel like snapping back into reality just yet? How about a theme park?To the east of Meredith, you will fi nd the township of Anakie, famous for
its Fairy Park. Fairy Park is a ‘fantasy and fairytale’ theme park set amidst
9.5 ha of natural parkland and landscaped gardens. You don’t need to have
children - you just need to have been a child once. Admission is between
10am - 4pm.
Fairy Park is 2km from the Anakie township on the Geelong-Ballan Road
(C141). Anakie is roughly in the middle of the triangle created by Ballarat,
Geelong and Melbourne.
2388 Ballan Road, Anakie, (03) 5284 1262.
How about a different kind of song – bird song?Again, to the east of Meredith via the Midland Highway is the Brisbane
Ranges National Park which will delight nature lovers. The Park has over
170 species of birds and a keen eye may also be rewarded with wallabies,
echidnas, possums and koalas. The start of the Anakie Gorge Walk also has
BBQ/picnic facilities.
Change channels completelyTake home some native plants and nurture them. The Meredith Wholesale
and Retail Nursery sells native tubestock and more advanced plants,
plus all types of deciduous fruit and ornamental trees. They supplied
many of the native plants on the festival site. Open 10am - 4pm.
8 Read Street, Meredith, (03) 5286 1397.
The Golden Plains region features many of Victoria’s best known and award winning vineyards and wine labels. On your way from Meredith to Geelong is Clyde Park Vineyard. The winery
received excellent reviews in the James Halliday Wine Companion, with the
Shiraz 2002 and Reserve Chardonnay 2002 each rated 96 points and the
vineyard receiving 5 stars. They do great grub with views to match as well.
Cellar Door open 11am - 5pm and the Bistro is open 12noon - 4pm.
2490 Midland Highway, Bannockburn, (03) 5281 7274.
THINGS TO DO ON MONDAY
The Meredith Community Tucker Tent provides revellers at the festival with
a variety of hot food and cold beverages, all served with a huge dose of
country hospitality. All the helpers in the Tucker Tent are volunteers from
local sporting clubs, the primary school, the kindergarten and the hall
committee. They commit their time to help feed the hungry hordes and
raise vital funds for the local not-for-profi t community groups.
Some of the Organisations that have benefi ted over the years include:
The Meredith Golf Club, Cricket Club, Junior Football Club, Kindergarten,
Primary School, Tennis Club and the Moorabool Valley Masters Football
Club. A large slice of the profi t also goes towards the ongoing care of
festival co-founder Chris Nolan who was, at one time, a member of many
of these groups.
The Tucker Tent team has recently constructed a permanent home, which
was made possible from monetary and voluntary assistance from members
of the community, the festival, as well as some previous Tucker Tent profi ts.
The permanent residence helps ensure the continued supply of quality food
and provides a more comfortable working environment for the 300-strong
volunteer team.
BREAKFAST IN BED8am - 11am, Sunday and Monday the Mobile Brekkie utes will once
again roll around the campgrounds – one in Bavaria and the other in
Argentina – selling hot, fresh egg & bacon sandwiches and cold drinks,
proudly brought to you by The Community Tucker Tent.

Here at the Supernatural Amphitheatre we have an ongoing commitment to minimise the impact of the human infl ux each year on the fl ora and fauna, and specifi cally to dramatically reduce the amount of landfi ll the festival generates.
The Recycling System developed with Waste Wise separates all the rubbish into streams. We need your help to make this work.
You will be given BLUE and BLACK bags either on arrival or over the weekend, these are for your campsite.
Before you leave, please make sure you throw your bags in the enclosures.
If you are staying in Top Camp use the enclosures located at grid reference H5, M3, M5, P4 and at F7 on exit. (see Map in centrefold)
If you are staying in Bush Camp please use the enclosures located at grid reference D12 and at F9 on exit.
After the full bins are collected, the Team sorts through each one and separates the contents into three streams. Please make this task easier by using the right bin! All the food scraps, paper, cardboard, etc are composted on site.
All bottles, plastic containers, cans and cartons are sent to Visy Recycling.
BLUE BAG RECYCLABLES All drink containers, cans, bottles, cups, cartons, etc.
BLACK BAGGENERAL RUBBISH Everything else.
KEEPING YOUR CAMPSITE CLEAN
KEEPING THE AMPHITHEATRE CLEANPlease help clean up the Amphitheatre during the festival - listen out for the cleanup music.
This year the Waste Team has installed bins with bin caps in the International Food Court and Southbank as well as around the Amphitheatre to help us ‘stream’ the rubbish. Anything and everything that comes out of a food stall can be recycled or go into
compost, so don’t just throw it in any bin!
YELLOW YELLOW CAPCAPRECYCLABLES All drink containers – cans, bottles, cups, cartons, etc.
GREEN CAPCOMPOST Food and paper.
RED CAPGENERAL RUBBISHEverything else.
Note: couches, broken tents and chairs may fall into the General Rubbish Category… BUT! The farm doesn’t want them so TAKE THEM WITH YOU or do us a favour and DROP THEM OFF at grid reference F7.
We thank you very much for helping to Keep Golden Plains Bewdiful.
