The Voice of older people on Community Radio

The Golden Voices Project gives people over 50 a voice through the medium of radio, providing an opportunity for older people to contribute to radio programmes. The project aims for the individual to play a more active role in civic society. The project trains Senior Media Mentors who can pass on their skills to their peers, enabling them to make radio productions and broadcast to the community. This builds skills and confidence and may also give opportunities for socialisation amongst the older population leading to more positive and fulfilling lives. This is an ideal opportunity for older people to take part in debates and discussions with local policy makers and Teesside personalities and to put together their own radio features on subjects of interest to them.

About the show...

It has a different theme every week and comprises of a selection of music including classical based around the theme, also artist of the week, on this week, what’s on, poetry, history of a particular topic, medical talk and live interviews with guests. The show allows the listeners to be aware of topics that will benefit them.

The Golden Voices project would like to thank Irene for the hard work and dedication into the Golden Hours Show; Irene talked about her early life and read poetry. Hope you will keep listening and all the best in the future.

Meet the Senior Media Mentors “The Golden Voices project has changed my outlook to retirement after 42 years of working in a very stressful nursing profession. To have joined an amazing team of people who all have had to learn different skills and the ability to communicate with all walks of life and things we know very little about. It has been an amazing experience. I would highly recommend people with time to spare and are interested in the media and talking to people about their lives and aspirations to think about joining us” Andrea Browett (right).

Tony Lamerton AKA Teesside Tony is a newly recruited Senior Media Mentor in the Golden Voices Project, he is also an active member of his community, the Chair of University Ward Residents Association. Tony will be getting Older People’s views and interviews in his new role as the Golden Voices Community Reporter, which will then be aired on the Golden Hours Show.

Beryl Morris is an active member in her community as the Chair of the Charlbury Road Residents Association. Beryl said, “Since becoming part of the Golden Voices Project my self esteem and confidence has increased and has given me the ability to express my views. I was part of a successful campaign to keep the Charlbury Road Community Centre from closing due to the local authorities cuts.

Jacky Riley became involved in the Golden Voices project to share her knowledge and experience with the newly formed group. "Whilst being part of the Golden Voices Project I have not only shared my knowledge and experience but have learnt and developed my own skills in the process.”

“I enjoy being part of the Golden Voices, we meet interesting people, don't take ourselves to seriously and most of all its a nice group very capable of having fun.“ Ronald Taylor

Congratulations to our Award winning Golden Voices volunteers Middlesbrough Volunteering Star Awards 2012

The awards were set up to recognise and celebrate volunteering, and pay tribute to the exceptional individuals and organisations who make a real difference to the lives of others.

This year's awards ceremony took place at the Middlesbrough Teaching and Learning Centre in Cargo Fleet Lane on Thursday, November 29. The event was hosted by Middlesbrough Council in partnership with Teesside University, the BME Network CIC, West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust, Middlesbrough Voluntary Development Agency and CVFM Radio.

“Middlesbrough has always had a long and strong tradition of people, from right across the town, coming forward to work selflessly in our communities for the greater good. Whilst tonight will highlight a small number of these very worthy people and the outstanding work they undertake, we must not forget that through the hard endeavours and dedication of all our volunteers. Middlesbrough is quite simply a better place.” Ray Mallon Elected Mayor of Middlesbrough

Fun Events…. CSV-RSVP

The CSV is running a major initiative called The Professionals which aims to encourage people to share their skills, not just their time. Many organisations, charities and individuals need skilled help but don't know where to find it. Many volunteers know how to give time but haven't really thought about unlocking their skills and volunteering those too. CSV is working with organisations to determine what help they need and can use and will then find a volunteer who can fill the gap.

CSV has a large network of grassroots contacts as well as a long-standing partnership with BBC local radio.

We are raising the profile of volunteering through sharing skills in our local communities as well as working with other organisations in the field. We believe everyone has a skill they can share and we are helping them find the right outlet for them. CSV is also using its knowledge of volunteering in every setting to prepare a pack for people coming up to retirement to encourage them to take up volunteering and use their transferable work skill for the good of voluntary groups and organisations.
