Please understand that this process is VERY important for us to maintain accurate records. If you attend the Center on a regular basis, and do not have a card, please stop at the front desk or see a staff member.

We are hosting a gospel music night on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM. This event is sponsored by The Helen Purcell Home, and admission is $2.00. There will be a featured musician or group each month. This event is open to the public of all ages, and it will be a good time to enjoy great music and fellowship! This month’s concert will be held on March 8th, featuring Jim Mayercak.

Medical appointments are top priority. If schedule permits, trips to grocery, bank, barbers and hair salons may be arranged. We transport only within Muskingum County. We do not provide emergency transports. The suggested donation for transportation is $3.00 per trip (each way). All transporta-tion is by appointment only, and an advance notice of 3 BUSINESS DAYS is required. Call 740-454-9761, Ext. 111 to schedule an appointment.

HEAP The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Development Services Agency. It helps eligible Ohioans pay their home heat-ing energy bill. The benefit is applied directly to a customer’s utility bill or bulk fuel bill. The amount of the benefit is determined by the number of people in the household, the heating source, and the region of residence. You must be at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines. HEAP application assistance will be provided every Tuesday (with the exception of Holidays) from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. If you have an emergent need or disconnect notice, you must contact MEOAG / Community Action at 740.453.5703. The Center for Seniors does not provide financial assistance with utility bills.

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

MATTER OF BALANCE—FREE PROGRAM The Zanesville – Muskingum County Health Department will be conducting a Matter of Balance workshop at the Center beginning on April 6th at 1:00 PM. This is an eight week program that meets two hours per week. The program’s goal is to reduce and / or stop the fear of falling cycle and increase activity levels to reduce risk of falling. A majority of falls occur during routine activities and is NOT a normal part of aging. The program is opened to those 60 or older that have a concern about falling and are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength. Components of the program include:

● Group Discussions ● Problem Solving ● Skill Building ● Assertiveness Training ● Exercise Training ● Group Share for Practical Solutions ● Cognitive Restructuring – Learning to shift from positive to negative thinking patterns

This program is free. Please contact Becky to reserve your space in this valuable and informational workshop or see Cindy at the front desk.

AARP TAXAIDE FREE TAX HELP AARP Tax-Aide will be offering their service again this year here at the MCCFS. Tax preparation services will be offered on Wednesdays this year at the Center for Seniors in Zanesville through April 11, 2018. Free E-Filing of all returns will be provided, and all returns are computer prepared and take advantage of all new tax law changes. Returns will be completed on an appointment basis only, with one return per appointment. Tax clients will be given a list of items to bring to their appointment when calling the Center (740-454-9761) to schedule.

HEALTH CARE PLANNING WORKSHOP FOR VETERANS – FREE WORKSHOP Veterans, have you considered who will make your medical decisions for you in the event that you are unable to do so? Or, why health care planning is important and how you start these discussions with your loved ones? The purpose of this workshop is to help you maintain control of your health care and make your wishes known should you be unable to speak for yourself. A representative from the Department of Veterans Affairs - Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center will be here on Thursday March 22nd at 12:15 PM to discuss your options and answer any questions that you may have. Your family is welcome to attend with you. Assistance in filling out your VA Advance Directive will be available, should you need it, at a later date.

WINTER RECONNECT ORDER DEADLINE NEARING The Winter Reconnect Order program will be ending on April 13th. It can be used to establish new service, reconnect or to avoid disconnection of electric and natural gas utilities. This program does not apply to rural co-ops. The WRO program does not have any income guidelines. Services can be started, maintained or reconnected for $175. If you owe more than that you will have to make payment arrangements with your utility company for the remainder of the balance. To discuss payment arrangement options, contact your utility company or if you need financial assistance and fall within the income guidelines you may contact Community Action. To schedule an appointment, call 844-493-1197. Follow the prompts until you have been given an appointment time and confirmation number.

DIABETIC SUPPORT GROUP The Diabetic Support Group meets every Tuesday at 12:00 PM. Whether you’re a person with diabetes or just trying to be proactive, please join us. This month’s topics are:

Site Council

The MCCFS has partnered with the Bonnie Longaberger Senior Center in Dresden. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch and various activities are offered daily. Lunch is provided by the MCCFS and is served at 11:30 AM with a reservation. Scheduled activities include:

Monday/Wednesday/Friday - Line Dance Class at 10:00 a.m. Monday – Grocery Bingo at 12:00 noon Tuesdays and Thursdays – Cards from 12:00 noon (Canasta, Hausey, and Euchre)

Our next OPEN FORUM meeting will be held on Monday, March 26th at 9:30 AM in the Fultonham Room for anyone who would like to express comments and concerns regarding the Center. This is an official meeting and minutes will be taken so that results can be measured. All are welcome!

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES DEEP—DIABETES EMPOWERMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM—FREE PROGRAM

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, also known as DEEP, is an evidence-based education curriculum designed to help people with pre-diabetes and diabetes gain a better understanding of diabetes self-care. Classes are highly participative and taught by peer educators and community workers. Visuals are used to help emphasize the learning modules. This is a six week program that will meet a maximum of two hours weekly. The program goals are:

Improving and maintaining the quality of life of persons with diabetes Preventing complications and incapacities Improving eating habits and maintaining adequate nutrition Understanding the human body Increasing physical activity Developing self-care skills Improving the relationship between patients and health care providers Utilizing available resources Managing Stress

We are offering afternoon and evening workshops. Both will begin April 2nd and run through May 7th. The afternoon class will run 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The evening class will be from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please contact Becky or see Cindy at the front desk to register

ALZHEIMER’S EDUCATION SERIES AND SUPPORT GROUP We are pleased to have the Alzheimer’s Association share their knowledge and expertise about dementia, Alzheimer’s and other memory related issues. They will be offering a series of presenta-tions throughout the year, the first of which will be held on April 6th at 6:00 PM titled “Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers.” During this presentation you will learn about what changes to expect as your loved one’s condition progresses, including effective communication tips, care options, coping with relationship changes, grief and ways to maintain health as a caregiver. A discussion will follow. The first presentation will kick off our Caregiver Support Group, which will be held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM. The support group provides a place for discussion of the challenges of caregiving and a place to share experiences, tips, information and support. Watch for more information in the coming months for other presentations being offered. No registration is required. If you have any questions, please contact Becky.

NUTRITION HOME-DELIVERED MEAL CLIENTS:

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED Home delivered meal clients can help the Center save food, gas and money. If you are not going to be home to receive your meal, please call our Nutrition Department at 740-454-9761, Ext. 107 before 9:30 AM to let us know. This way we will not prepare a meal for you, our driver will not waste gas coming to your home, and we save money that will help serve others.

IRISH BOILED DINNER

I NGREDIENTS: 1 (5 1/2 Pound) corned beef brisket 2 large onions, peeled 16 small white (Irish) potatoes 2 (2pound) heads cabbage, each cut into 4 wedges 10 carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces

Put corned beef in a large pot and add water to cover by 3 inches. Cover and bring to a rolling boil, then remove lid and boil 30 minutes, skimming foam as needed. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 3 1/2 hours.

Add onions, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots to pot (add water if needed to cover vegetables). Cover, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes.

Transfer potatoes, cabbage, and carrots to a serving bowl. Slice onions in quarters and add to vegetables; cover with foil to keep warm. Keep brisket in pot until serving (it dries out quickly).

BE PREPARED Having an emergency food supply means you won’t go hungry when transportation, weather, health or other problems prevent you from getting your usual supply of groceries or meals. You should have at least a three day supply of food available. Check the expiration dates on your emergency stockpile every 6 months to keep things fresh. Don’t forget to have a hand-held can opener, disposable plates/cups and plasticware on hand. Suggestions for an emergency food pantry include:

Juice Crackers Nuts and Trail Mixes Granola or Protein Bars Dried Fruit Pudding Cups Canned or Vacuum-Packed Tuna or Chicken Canned Soup/Meals (Beef Stew, Ravioli,

OUTSIDE FOOD POLICY I t is the pol icy of the Muskingum County Center for Seniors that NO HOMEMADE foods are permitted to be brought in for activities. Store bought , pre-packaged i tems are a l lowed. Because our facility operates under a food license, this policy has been made to protect you, our Seniors, as well as the security of our food license. Also, our agreement with Area Agency on Aging prohibits outside lunch from being brought into the building. Thank you for your understanding in this matter!

FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry is open once monthly on the first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. If you have a food need and are not a current pantry client, please call Pathways of Licking County at 211 or 800-544-1601. They will refer you to the pantry closest to your home. This month’s pantry date at the Center is March 7th.

COMMODITIES REMINDER: All boxes need to be picked up on the assigned day. Please have your proxy pick up for you if you are unable to do so. If we do not hear from you by 4 PM the day of distribution, it will be counted as a “no show.” In order for the commodities distribution to run smoothly, partici-pants must watch for direction from Center employees, volunteers, and the officer on duty. DO NOT show up early. This only causes traffic congestion. Commodity distribution for this month is March 15th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED Home delivered meal clients can help the Center save food, gas and money. If you are not going to be home to receive your meal, please call our Nutrition Department at 740-454-9761, Ext. 107 before 9:30 AM to let us know. This way we will not prepare a meal for you, our driver will not waste gas coming to your home, and we save money that will help serve others.

IRISH BOILED DINNER

I NGREDIENTS: 1 (5 1/2 Pound) corned beef brisket 2 large onions, peeled 16 small white (Irish) potatoes 2 (2pound) heads cabbage, each cut into 4 wedges 10 carrots, cut into 1-inch pieces

Put corned beef in a large pot and add water to cover by 3 inches. Cover and bring to a rolling boil, then remove lid and boil 30 minutes, skimming foam as needed. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 3 1/2 hours.

Add onions, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots to pot (add water if needed to cover vegetables). Cover, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 30 minutes.

Transfer potatoes, cabbage, and carrots to a serving bowl. Slice onions in quarters and add to vegetables; cover with foil to keep warm. Keep brisket in pot until serving (it dries out quickly).

BE PREPARED Having an emergency food supply means you won’t go hungry when transportation, weather, health or other problems prevent you from getting your usual supply of groceries or meals. You should have at least a three day supply of food available. Check the expiration dates on your emergency stockpile every 6 months to keep things fresh. Don’t forget to have a hand-held can opener, disposable plates/cups and plasticware on hand. Suggestions for an emergency food pantry include:

OUTSIDE FOOD POLICY I t is the pol icy of the Muskingum County Center for Seniors that NO HOMEMADE foods are permitted to be brought in for activities. Store bought , pre-packaged i tems are a l lowed. Because our facility operates under a food license, this policy has been made to protect you, our Seniors, as well as the security of our food license. Also, our agreement with Area Agency on Aging prohibits outside lunch from being brought into the building. Thank you for your understanding in this matter!

FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry is open once monthly on the first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. If you have a food need and are not a current pantry client, please call Pathways of Licking County at 211 or 800-544-1601. They will refer you to the pantry closest to your home. This month’s pantry date at the Center is March 7th.

COMMODITIES REMINDER: All boxes need to be picked up on the assigned day. Please have your proxy pick up for you if you are unable to do so. If we do not hear from you by 4 PM the day of distribution, it will be counted as a “no show.” In order for the commodities distribution to run smoothly, partici-pants must watch for direction from Center employees, volunteers, and the officer on duty. DO NOT show up early. This only causes traffic congestion. Commodity distribution for this month is March 15th from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

The council is a group of Seniors who meet to hear the voice of Seniors at the MCCFS.

The next meeting of Site Council will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, March 5th in the Frazeysburg Room. If you don’t wish to attend the meeting but have input you’d like to share, please see any Site Council member before the meeting. The monthly Site Council Sweets Raffle/Bake Sale will take place on Wednesday,

March 14th in the Zanesville Room. 50/50 drawings are held every Wednesday! Site Council is hosting a St. Patrick’s Day/Spring Raffle—tickets are available at a cost of

4 tickets/$1.00; drawing to be held on March 29th. . Be sure to submit your guess for the Hershey Kisses guess jar for a chance to win a $5.00

gift card! Drawing will also be held on March 29th. A special raffle for a child’s accordion will also be held during the month of March. Tickets are

Site Council

The MCCFS has partnered with the Bonnie Longaberger Senior Center in Dresden. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch and various activities are offered daily. Lunch is provided by the MCCFS and is served at 11:30 AM with a reservation. Scheduled activities include:

SUPPORTIVE SERVICES DEEP—DIABETES EMPOWERMENT EDUCATION PROGRAM—FREE PROGRAM

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program, also known as DEEP, is an evidence-based education curriculum designed to help people with pre-diabetes and diabetes gain a better understanding of diabetes self-care. Classes are highly participative and taught by peer educators and community workers. Visuals are used to help emphasize the learning modules. This is a six week program that will meet a maximum of two hours weekly. The program goals are:

Improving and maintaining the quality of life of persons with diabetes Preventing complications and incapacities Improving eating habits and maintaining adequate nutrition Understanding the human body Increasing physical activity Developing self-care skills Improving the relationship between patients and health care providers Utilizing available resources Managing Stress

We are offering afternoon and evening workshops. Both will begin April 2nd and run through May 7th. The afternoon class will run 1:00 to 3:00 PM. The evening class will be from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please contact Becky or see Cindy at the front desk to register

ALZHEIMER’S EDUCATION SERIES AND SUPPORT GROUP We are pleased to have the Alzheimer’s Association share their knowledge and expertise about dementia, Alzheimer’s and other memory related issues. They will be offering a series of presenta-tions throughout the year, the first of which will be held on April 6th at 6:00 PM titled “Living with Alzheimer’s for Caregivers.” During this presentation you will learn about what changes to expect as your loved one’s condition progresses, including effective communication tips, care options, coping with relationship changes, grief and ways to maintain health as a caregiver. A discussion will follow. The first presentation will kick off our Caregiver Support Group, which will be held the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM. The support group provides a place for discussion of the challenges of caregiving and a place to share experiences, tips, information and support. MATTER OF BALANCE—FREE PROGRAM The Zanesville – Muskingum County Health Department will be conducting a Matter of Balance workshop at the Center beginning on April 6th at 1:00 PM. This is an eight week program that meets two hours per week. The program’s goal is to reduce and / or stop the fear of falling cycle and increase activity levels to reduce risk of falling. A majority of falls occur during routine activities and is NOT a normal part of aging. The program is opened to those 60 or older that have a concern about falling and are interested in improving flexibility, balance and strength. Components of the program include:

● Group Discussions ● Problem Solving ● Skill Building ● Assertiveness Training ● Exercise Training ● Group Share for Practical Solutions ● Cognitive Restructuring – Learning to shift from positive to negative thinking patterns

AARP TAXAIDE FREE TAX HELP AARP Tax-Aide will be offering their service again this year here at the MCCFS. Tax preparation services will be offered on Wednesdays this year at the Center for Seniors in Zanesville through April 11, 2018. Free E-Filing of all returns will be provided, and all returns are computer prepared and take advantage of all new tax law changes. Returns will be completed on an appointment basis only, with one return per appointment. Tax clients will be given a list of items to bring to their appointment when calling the Center (740-454-9761) to schedule.

HEALTH CARE PLANNING WORKSHOP FOR VETERANS – FREE WORKSHOP Veterans, have you considered who will make your medical decisions for you in the event that you are unable to do so? Or, why health care planning is important and how you start these discussions with your loved ones? The purpose of this workshop is to help you maintain control of your health care and make your wishes known should you be unable to speak for yourself. A representative from the Department of Veterans Affairs - Chalmers P. Wylie Ambulatory Care Center will be here on Thursday March 22nd at 12:15 PM to discuss your options and answer any questions that you may have. Your family is welcome to attend with you. Assistance in filling out your VA Advance Directive will be available, should you need it, at a later date.

WINTER RECONNECT ORDER DEADLINE NEARING The Winter Reconnect Order program will be ending on April 13th. It can be used to establish new service, reconnect or to avoid disconnection of electric and natural gas utilities. This program does not apply to rural co-ops. The WRO program does not have any income guidelines. Services can be started, maintained or reconnected for $175. If you owe more than that you will have to make payment arrangements with your utility company for the remainder of the balance. To discuss payment arrangement options, contact your utility company or if you need financial assistance and fall within the income guidelines you may contact Community Action. To schedule an appointment, call 844-493-1197. Follow the prompts until you have been given an appointment time and confirmation number.

We do not provide emergency transports. The suggested donation for transportation is $3.00 per trip (each way). HEAP The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program administered by the Ohio Development Services Agency. It helps eligible Ohioans pay their home heat-ing energy bill. The benefit is applied directly to a customer’s utility bill or bulk fuel bill. The amount of the benefit is determined by the number of people in the household, the heating source, and the region of residence. You must be at or below 175% of the federal poverty guidelines. MY SENIOR CENTER Just a reminder to please sign in to MY SENIOR CENTER when you come in for lunch and/or activities. This is our way to track our meals and attendance at activities. Please understand that this process is VERY important for us to maintain accurate records. If you attend the Center on a regular basis, and do not have a card, please stop at the front desk or see a staff member.

The Muskingum County Center for Seniors is closed on the following days in 2018:

Monday, January 1—New Year’s Day Monday, January 15—Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Monday, February 19—Presidents’ Day Monday, May 28—Memorial Day

Wednesday July 4—Independence Day Monday, September 3—Labor Day

Monday, October 8—Columbus Day Monday, November 12—Veterans Day Thursday, November 22—Thanksgiving

Friday, November 23—day after Thanksgiving Tuesday, December 25—Christmas

Lockers are available for your time at the Center on a daily basis. Locks are available for your use at the front desk, and items should not be left in lockers overnight.

INCLEMENT WEATHER: During periods of inclement weather, please tune in to local media stations for possible closings or cancellations. If a Level 3 Snow Emergency is declared, the Muskingum County Center for Seniors will be CLOSED.

Remember to set your clocks AHEAD one hour before you go to bed on Saturday, March 10th. We lose an hour of sleep, but we GAIN an hour of sunshine!!
